Chapter 54
Calum's PoV
I could barely sleep. I was buzzing. I just wanted it to be the morning so we could tell the guys and girls about our happy news - both parts of it. It was hard to pretend everything was okay when deep down I was scared, scared that Poppy would fall ill or have to stop touring with us and I'd be left alone. I couldn't do it. I honestly didn't know how the guys managed to continue touring without the girls there. It was crazy. I suppose it was slightly different with me because Poppy was meant to tour with us, I'd never had to experience the loss of watching her go to the airport or having to say that goodbye that would last for months. I admired my brothers for being so strong through it all. So when this good news came about and she was clear, it made me even happier than I could have even imagined.
"Good morning." Poppy smiled sleepily as she noticed me staring up at the ceiling, engrossed in my thoughts.
"Hey beautiful." I turned over and smiled, putting my arm around her as I gave her a kiss. She kissed me back softly but intensely, treasuring the moment. It was our first morning together after the news and clearly we were both on cloud nine. We lay in each other's arms for a while before Poppy reluctantly got up, sighing as she looked at the time.
"We've got so much planned for today, the guys will be mad if we're late again!" She said with a laugh. I checked my phone and realised Luke had already text me once to remind me to be ready and at reception by 10am. It was already 9am and I hadn't even moved yet. I threw my phone beside me as I sat up, rubbing my eyes as I tried to wake myself up. There'd be no time for a good breakfast or coffee this morning, we were already running late. Suddenly, Poppy's phone began to ring, the vibrations making me jump. I leapt over and grabbed it, seeing Dr Forrester's name flashing on screen.
"Hey Sam, it's Calum." I said as I moved towards the bathroom, gesturing to the phone when Poppy looked around.
"Hey Cal. Sorry to call early but the blood results came back with quite a high hormone marker. I think we need to get a scan done to date the pregnancy and I've been called about a cancellation this morning. Would Poppy be able to come?" I smiled as I imagined us looking at the little baby on the ultrasound scanner and finally seeing our bundle of joy. There was no way I could delay that.
"Sure, what time?" Poppy instantly threw me a confused glance as she brushed her teeth, wondering what I was signing her up for.
"10:30? The hospital is only a fifteen minute drive from where you are." Sam explained and I agreed hastily.
"Fantastic. That's great thanks Sam." At his name, Poppy's eyes widened. I sent her a smile to say that it was good news and she relaxed, finishing brushing her teeth and washing her face. I quickly said my goodbyes to the doctor and as I put Poppy's phone down on the side, she waited expectantly.
"Well?" She pressed.
"You've got a scan booked for 10:30. I'll tell the others we'll meet them afterwards." I beamed, but Poppy seemed less than impressed. She stared back at me with a raised eyebrow.
"Cal, I know you're excited but shouldn't you have asked me first? What if I didn't want to go now? If I wanted to tell the guys before running off secretly all the time? Look how that panned out for Crystal - paps caught her and made up a story that she was cheating." I knew that she feared the news getting out, especially with how Naomi had been so far, but surely she didn't really think this was a bad idea? She would be able to see our baby, get a due date and find out how many weeks or months along she was. This was perfect news to find out before we told the gang.
"Pops..." I sighed. "I know you're apprehensive, I am too. There's a lot that could change if this news got out but at be end of the day you're still pregnant. A bump will show soon enough and everyone will know whether you like it or not. It's best to be safe and sensible now and worry about the paps later." I knew she appreciated what I'd said and that it was exactly what she was thinking about. Luckily I'd put her mind at ease. She noticeably relaxed, closing her eyes for a second as she breathed out and sorted herself out, finally offering me a smile.
"I'm sorry Cal. You're right. I'd best wear something loose." She went through her wardrobe and picked out a floaty floral dress which she quickly changed into. "You'd best make up an excuse to your friends for us being late." She hinted, nodding behind me where my phone was ringing. I rolled my eyes, rushing over and answering Ashton's call.
"Hey ash." I said, trying to remain calm.
"Did Luke text you? We're meeting at 10am at the reception. Don't be late!" Ashton was already scolding me, knowing how we were always late for the meet-ups.
"Sorry ash, I was just about to text you all. Poppy has an appointment at 10:30, a short notice one. We have to go to that and then we'll meet up with you afterwards." I rushed, taking in the time. I mouthed for Poppy to call a cab which she did.
"An appointment? Is everything okay?" Ashton suddenly sounded worried, I couldn't give too much away because we wanted to tell them the news in person. I hesitated as my mind raced with possibilities.
"Uh, well... it's one of her blood results. It's come back elevated and they want to check something." Poppy scowled at me for making it sound like it was bad news. Ashton sighed heavily.
"Ah man I'm so sorry. It's okay, I'll tell the others. I hope the appointment goes well. Send Poppy my love." I gulped heavily as I imagined how upset he must have been when on reality everything was fine. Was I out of line lying like this?
"Thanks, I will. We'll text you when we're out and meet up with you all - wherever that will be." We both said bye and I hung up, looking over at Poppy as she stood with her hands on her hips. She was looking at me with an eyebrow raised and a sour expression on her face. Okay so maybe my little lie wasn't as good as I'd hoped, but the guys couldn't know the truth so what was I supposed to say? Silently I shrugged, offering her a hand as we headed out of the hotel and into the car, ready to finally meet our little bundle of joy.
