Chapter 41

Calum's PoV

The gig went without a hitch, despite my mind being elsewhere it had been a very good distraction. We'd done a soundcheck, question and answer session and then the gig, meeting some fans backstage before we finally headed to the dressing room to all get packed up and head back to the hotel. Every now and again I'd go to speak to Poppy or look round to find her and realise that she wasn't there, my heart suddenly aching as I realised where she was and what she was going through whilst I was enjoying my life and the band. Just as we headed out and into the car to head back to the hotel, my phone began to buzz. All my band mates looked at me expectantly, waiting to hear the news once I'd been updated.

"Hey Dr Forrester." I answered.

"Please, I told you to call me Sam." He retaliated. "Look Calum, I hope you're sitting down because I have some bad news." My stomach dropped as my chest tightened. No. Please. Not anything to do with Poppy. I don't think I could handle anything bad. I loudly sighed, attracting everyone in the cars attention. "Look, I'm so sorry to have to say this. I don't know how it happened..." he was rambling on, beginning to agitate me. Was Poppy okay? Just tell me!

"Sam! What happened? What are you talking about?" My brothers all exchanged worried glances.

"Poppy's Cancer. Someone leaked it to the press." He spat out. My throat went dry.

"What?"

"I don't have a clue how it happened! We came out from surgery and it was on the tv in our waiting room, a breaking news story. We've been fighting off paparazzi all day!" Sam explained. My jaw tensed as fury filled me. Someone was disgusting enough to find out something so personal about Poppy and then think it would be good to release it to the press? There was only one person that I could think of.

Naomi.

"How was the surgery?" I asked carefully, wondering if that was the end of the bad news or if there was more. He audibly sighed.

"To me, the surgery was a success. I believe we've removed all the cancerous cells without having to remove the entire thyroid. We've sent it off for testing and then she'll have to have some follow up tests to see if any is left. If it is, we'll have to do the iodine therapy." I breathed out a sigh of relief. Thank God. She was okay. Poppy's surgery had gone well.

"That's great news. Thank you Sam."

"I do apologise that it took so long to speak with you. As I mentioned we've had a paparazzi field day, it's taken everyone we have to steer her into a protected room without them getting photos. It's been a hard day." He sounded stressed merely mentioning it and my mind floated back to when I was on the ward with my broken ankle and how many paps had tried to ambush me then. No doubt it was the same for Poppy now.

"Thank you so much Sam. I appreciate everything you've done for us so far." I said before we quickly said our goodbyes. As soon as I'd hung up my phone, I let out a half relieved half frustrated sigh.

"Good news?" Ashton was careful to ask. I shook my head. That fucking woman had ruined everything. Why did I ever let her back in. I grabbed my phone and went online, my social media full of articles about Poppy and her cancer and how we had kept it quiet. Now her face was plastered over everything. I picked one article in particular and shoved my phone into Ashton's hand. He looked at me hesitantly as he took it, quickly looking at the article. His eyes widened instantly.

"She didn't..." he muttered as he passed the phone to Luke, who then passed it to Mike before it came back to me.

"Holy shit." Michael breathed. "You think this was Naomi?" I nodded silently, my anger building so rapidly that I knew any moment now I would explode. How could she do this to us? To me? If she was trying to win me over she wasn't. Didn't she realise that I was one of those trying to keep my life out of the public eye? If she was so quick to sell her stories then I'd never trust her. The car fell back into silence once again as I glanced back down at the article, quickly roaring as I lobbed my phone at the seat ahead of me.

"Cal, I know you're angry but think of Poppy. The surgery went well, she needs help with recovering. All this paparazzi shit can wait until she's better." Luke tried to help, and I know he only meant well, but truly it wasn't helping any more. I had had more than enough. I went onto my twitter account and sent my first tweet in ages.

Calum5SOS: Unbelievable just how desperate some people are for attention.

Within seconds my phone was buzzing wildly of fans and verified accounts alike all responding to my tweet.

"Was that wise?" Ashton said as the notification pinged on his phone. I simply shrugged as if to say I didn't care.

Ashton5SOS: Some things are ours to keep a secret. Sending my thoughts and love to my besties @/Calum5SOS and @/PoppyKnurse. Pure evil went to work here.

I patted Ashton's shoulder as if to say thank you as he backed me up on twitter knowing that if management had an issue, they would have to deal with all of us instead of just penalising me. I really appreciated my brothers for that. They were willing to stick their necks out just to protect me. We all meant everything to the rest of the gang.

Luke5SOS: unbelievable act of spite and jealousy. To leak someone else's personal info is a low blow. Love you man @/Calum5SOS

Michael5SOS: truly can't believe it. Some people are so focussed on themselves they forget about their actions and how they affect others. @/PoppyKnurse @/Calum5SOS you guys rock

But it was too late. The information was already out there, the world now knew of Poppy's sickness and her surgery. They knew where she was, what had happened and what was going to happen. The whole thing was a mess and I had Naomi to thank for that.

I really needed to teach her a lesson.
