Little Lighters

-Abe's pov-

When I walked through the door into the house I was greeted by Red, who was standing there, arms crossed and tail flicking back and forth, like an angry cat.

" Abe."

" Red...How is everything?"

His eyes narrowed a bit and his tail sped up,

" Well besides my sister becoming an alcoholic and her nearly going insane I'm quite well. How was the mission?"

His voice was so cold, it was almost alarming, but I continued on, setting my bag down and pulling off my breathing apparatus. Red moved away from the entrance and over to the kitchen, where he pulled out a beer and when he cracked it opened I jumped. It was so quiet in the house that it sounded like a gunshot.

" You couldn't call or even write once? My sister was looking like something Manning would even take pity on, after he shit and pissed on it. She just now started to live again, she got dressed and went out on a date. He seemed nice, Rose doesn't like him too much. But who can we blame, she was hellbent on you coming home. That sparked my interest.

" How is Rose? How big is she? Does she look more like me or Ellie?"

Red's eyes narrowed again and he sat on the counter.

" She is growing faster than a normal human, smarter than most preschoolers. Already telling the twins off and everything, kinda reminds me of when Ellie and I were kids. But that's not the point Abe. You hurt my sister, and now you come back almost wanting to pick up right where you two left off. That's not going to happen, Liz is so pissed off at you and I'm...well I should be kicking your ass seven ways from sunday, but I'm not. I am going to let you off with this warning. If you ever hurt my sister or my niece again, I will hurt you and I will never let you see them again. Brother or not."

He then got down, gulping down the rest of his beer and lumbered off, probably back to his bedroom.

" WHY DIDN'T YOU KICK HIS-"

" Let him see her. He needs to see what he missed out."

The door opened and I heard a quick patter of feet, then a little girl came running at her, her silver hair flying behind her, but what got me was her big blue eyes and her slightly blue tinted skin.

" DADA!"

She jumped, clinging to my legs with an iron grip. I slowly bent over, pulling free of my legs and pulled her into my arms.

" Hey my little thorn."

Her eyes almost closed as she smiled, something her mother did when she was truly happy.

" I missed you."

I whispered, my throat was closing up, like I was going to cry. Her little smile disappeared as she looked over my shoulder,

" Mama gone. With stupid deer man. He is no good. Dada better."

How could Ellie leave our child when she knew that she didn't like the man she was seeing. Why didn't she wait for me a little bit longer?

" Daddy's here now. I promise I will talk to your mom. Make her see that that man isn't any good for her."

Rose nodded, her lip stuck out a bit.

" Dada stay now? Mama cry lots."

She then started to wiggle a bit, kicking until I put her down. As soon as her feet hit the ground she took off, running over to the stairs and sat down. Where she scooted down the stairs surprisingly fast. Following her into my room I saw that the couch was covered with blankets and surrounded by empty coffee mugs and books. They must have been sleeping in here without fail every night. Walking over to the couch I saw that there was an open scrapbook, one page looked a bit wrinkled, like someone had sat there crying while looking at it. Looking closer I saw that it was a picture of Ellie and myself, her being very pregnant and both of our hands on her stomach. She was grinning so much her eyes were closed and I looked incredibly proud.

" Mama missed you. She loves you lots. I missed you Dada."

She got up on the couch and patted the seat beside me, when I sat she all but threw a book onto my lap.

" Read to me? Like Mama does."

Nodding, I pulled her onto my lap and curled into the couch, supporting Rose between the back of the couch and myself, while propping the book up on my legs.

" Once upon a time, in a kingdom far far away..."

-Ellie's pov-

Jackson was so sweet, but it just wasn't the same. I was trying to damn hard to change, to be my old self, but who was I without my soulmate?

" Eleanor, did you hear me?"

His voice was soft, almost like he was too scared to speak.

" Um, no. Sorry I was thinking about what book I was going to read to Rose tonight."

He nodded, her ears flicking back a bit and he cleared his throat.

" I said, do you want to head back to my place? We can um...finish up desert."

I blinked, was he already trying to get into my pants? Hell fucking no.

" I don't think that will be wise at the moment Jackson. I have a daughter I need to take care of, and besides don't you think that-"

" No I don't. I want you and I am going to have you if I want to. Now pay the bill and get in my car. Your Abe is DEAD so I am the one who gets you."

Oh, he is going to get a foot shoved so far up his ass...

" No. I will not. I am my own person thank you very much. I thought you were a nice guy Jackson, but all you want is to get laid. I head margret from the front desk is desperate. So why don't you try her? Besides, I am no one's to tell who get me now or not. Fuck you asshole. I'm going to walk home and you sure as hell can pay for our food."

I stood up, grabbing my jacket and stormed out of the restaurant. How dare he treat me like that? Abe would have kick his ass in two seconds flat. Grumbling to myself I let myself shift back into my normal form, horns and everything and started to run. I loved the feeling of wind in my hair, it had been so long since I went for a run. I missed this. Soon I was nearing the house when I got a feeling. Something was off, who was in the house? Reaching out my mind I recounted, six people. How was that...Abe! I felt his mind open up and welcome me home. Every second that had passed since he had left was being relieved. All the pain and suffering that I had to go through, and then I felt his. He hurt just as much as I did. Our minds melded together as I ran into the house, not even bothering to shut the door. I raced down the stairs and into the library, where I threw myself into his awaiting arms. Where we kissed until I was breathless.

" You're home...YOU'RE HOME!"

I pulled away, anger filling me as I looked at him.

" What the heck Abe? No phone call, no note, no nothing! It was like you dropped off the face of the earth! No matter how hard I tried to reach my mind out to find you I saw nothing. Now you are here and Rose. Wheres Rose?"

" Mama! Dada is home!"

Her soft voice came from behind me, her eyes were so bright with happiness I automatically softened.

" Yeah Baby, he is. You were right. Such a smart cookie you are."

She grinned more, her eyes closing but then she pouted.

" Stupid smelly man gone now?"

I nodded, walking over to her and scooped her into my arms.

" Yeah, he was a big meany wad. Wanting to get into mommys pants when she wasn't interested."

" What?"

Abe's voice came out almost a growl.

" He was rude and trying to get in-"

" Shush. You were gone for a long time. I can take care of myself. Besides, I ran home before anything could happen."

His eyes opened a bit more and his let out a grunt. Turning back to Rose I noticed that she was a bit warmer than normal. Usually she was a bit cooler,

" Rose, are you feeling okay?"

She shrugged, pointing to her head and muttering,

" Head hurts."

I nodded, getting an idea. Walking out of the library and up to the living room.

" Red."

He and Liz were sitting on the floor holding onto May and Bella. When I walked in they both jumped up, glancing behind me.

" So he's back."

Liz nodded,

" We were going to warn you before going down to see him, but you rushed in so fast..."

She trailed off, glancing at Red.

" Did you want to talk about something? Wait, is Rose okay?"

Glancing down I saw that Rose looked almost red in the face, placing my hand to her forehead I could feel heat radiating of of her.

" No, I think that Abe brought a cold with him from wherever the hell he was."

Liz nodded,

" I have some baby cold medicine she can have."

She handed May to Red and started walking down the hall.

" I'm sure she is alright."

I nodded, rocking Rose a bit as she buried her head in my shoulder more.

" Here, just give it to her every six hours. Her fever should break soon. Uh, don't even try to give her any milk. The fever tends to make it curdle."

Liz's voice was soft, she had to deal with the twins being warmer than normal sometimes.

" Damn it Abe getting my daughter sick."

I grumbled, giving her what she needed.

-time skip-

Rose was feeling better, but she kept trying to go into Abe's tank with him when the water was too cold for her at the moment. Hence the biggest fit ever. She was sitting on our couch glaring at the two of while we talked about his time of absence. Looking at the man who I didn't know weather to forgive or not. His heart was in the right place, doing this for our daughter but for the fact we went almost seven months without a word. Now around christmas some would call this a 'miracle' but I didn't want to call it that. It wasn't until I heard a crackle and a scream. Turning I saw Rose with little fires surrounding her, they were every color of the rainbow. She looked terrified

" Baby, it's okay. See Mommy can do it."

I held out my hand, showing her my own flames. Then I started to show off a bit, letting electricity cover my hands and down around my arms. It was funny to watch her eyes grow wide with excitement and her hair started to stick up.

" So she is a perfect mix of you and Abe, it's cute."

Glancing at the door I saw Liz and Red standing there, each of them had a kid in their arms. May was grinning at Rose. Both of the girls had their mothers fire ability, but May with Reds looks and Bella with her mother's it was fun to see.

" So all three of the kids can play with fire. This is hilarious. Who needs a lighter when we have three living ones."

I narrowed my eyes,

" Did you just call my kid a lighter? Ass-"

" Assistant Hellboy, you sir are hilarious."

Abe appeared next to me, I didn't even hear him get out of the tank, but there he was. Water dripping off of him while he stood there.

" I just find it funny how I went for a woman who can summon hellfire while my little sister went for someone whose element is water."

I snorted, pulling Rose onto my lap and watched as her little fires went out. I guess that's why she wasn't feeling good, she was showing her own powers.

" Well we came to tell you that we are going on a small vacation, so you three will have the house to yourselves."

Nodding, I stood up, turning Rose so she was hanging onto me like a monkey, her body was back to it's normal temperature but I was still going to give her medicine for a while. Make sure it was just the powers.

" Just don't make a Rose two point oh."

Red said, his voice was light but there was an undertone I didn't want place. I wasn't ready to forgive Abe, hell I was still keeping him out of my head..he didn't need to see what I had done, what I had thought during that time. How I had dealt with the problems that I had been enforcing onto myself.

" Yeah, check on that. She and I will be sharing a room and she is a light sleeper so no problems there."

I said, glancing behind me at Abe, it was a warning, but also a challenge. See if he will try to earn his way back into my trust. I felt a tap on my mental barrier, but I was tempted to shove when I thought better of it,

" What do you want Abe? If you understood what I said then go for it. Earn what you have lost. Every day they are gone I will show you a thought and a memory of my dark moments without you. How I was someone your daughter, our child, wasn't able to look up to."

" How long is this punishment going to last? I want to hold you, to pull you closer to me and show you how hard those months had been for me. I want to show you all the dreams I had and make them come true. Besides...I think it will be better if Rose has her own room."

I narrowed my eyes,

" You horny fishman. No way. I'm going to lock OUR Bedroom door now. She is going to sleep on the inside but get this, she is a light sleeper. Anything she hears that is out of the ordinary, she will wake up. So good luck horny fishman. Don't be so blue around the gills."

" Now I know they are talking dirty. Ellie's face is all red now."

Fuck. Coughing I started to scratch my neck, he wasn't completely wrong, just calling out anything like that was what he did best. In some ways my brother was a big ol' pervert. Snorting at myself I sat down, pulling Rose close, we were one hell of a family, but no matter what, I guess we will always have each other.
