Chapter 9: New Job! New Problems!

(No ones POV)

It has been a week since Adam's funeral. Things on Mewni were slowly returning to normal. A couple of people from the royal castle and a few members of the magic high commission were still affected by the loss... But everyone had their own duties to fulfill.
Speaking of duty, the knights of Mewni were still looking for Adam's murderer. However, they had no clue where to start looking. The person who killed him knew very well how to get inside the castle without being detected... The queen said it. No matter how long it takes, justice will be served. The murderer will eventually be discovered one way or another... And (y/n) was trying to find that another way.
(y/n) was inside his lab outside the city. He was currently tapping the table with one hand while supporting the weight of his head with the other. (y/n) couldn't thought of a way to find the murderer. At first, he thought the person who poisoned his father was the same person who tried to poison the queen as an act of revenge for frustrating his plans of revenge against the royal family. However, that criminal got stabbed in the back a month ago and died in prison because of that... (y/n) had a zombie assassin theory but with no real evidence to back it up.

(y/n): Uuuugh! Such a brilliant brain with not such brilliant ideas!

(y/n) slammed his face on the table in frustration. Scaramouche walked up to his master and placed a hand over his shoulder.

Scaramouche: Listen master of masters. Creator of the most stylish machine that has ever existed-

(y/n)(muffled): Get on with it...

Scaramouche: Alright, sorry. I was trying to get the mojo flowing... Anyway, maybe you are thinking too much?

(y/n) lifted his face from the table. He then pinched his forehead in frustration.

(y/n): Maybe you are right... In my attempts to bring this monster to justice I'm only losing my ability to think rationally... But if I'm going to be part of the magic high commission-

Scaramouche: Speaking about that, didn't you had a meeting with the queen today?

(y/n): ...

(y/n) completely forgot... He has been so obsessed with the quest to find his father's killer that he got tunnel vision from his other responsibilities.

(y/n): HOLY CRAP! WHY DIDN'T YOU TOLD ME BEFORE?!?

Scaramouche: I thought you knew it was today!

(y/n): DAMN IT!!!

(y/n) quickly got up and rushed towards the door. But before leaving, he quickly turned around and looked at Scaramouche.

(y/n): If Hekapoo comes by, tell her I'm not here!

Scaramouche: I believe she will be able to tell thanks to the lack of explosions.

(y/n): Yeah... If she still comes here, don't say weird stuff... Okay?

Scaramouche: Still avoiding your feelings for that smoking lady?~

(y/n)'s turned red before he violently opened the door and slammed it shut behind him.

Scaramouche: Unless she is blind, she will totally find the answer by herself...

Scaramouche was totally speaking about Hekapoo.

Scaramouche: Oh, well. Time to redecorate with some music!

Scaramouche said before heading towards the basement... That was probably not going to end well.

(Time Skip)

The best two pair of guards were guarding the gates of the throne room while talking to each other. And by "best" we clearly meant "worst".

Bob: So then I said "What if we make a luge race?". And then he said-

Brad: Wait, do you heard that?

They both hear the sound of what appears to be a person running. The sound of that person's footsteps became louder and louder with each second.

Brad: Man... This hallway sure makes a lot of eccho. You can hear anything that happens here.

Bob: Yeah... Wait, shouldn't we do something?

Brad: We are doing something. We are guarding the door.

Bob: You are right... And then he said "do you have a helmet?" and I said "I got like five!". But then he said-

The story was once again interrupted by a person yelling "get out of the way" in the hallway.

Brad: Wait... That voice sounds familiar.

Bob: Yeah... Wait, did that person said-

???: GET OUT OF THE WAY!!!

Both Bob and Brad turned towards the source of the voice and saw (y/n) running at full speed towards them. He did not had any intentions of stopping.

Bob: Oh, it's (y/n).

Brad: Hello (y/n)! How is it go-

Both were violently pushed out of the way by (y/n), who wasted no time in opening the doors and getting inside the throne room for his meeting with the queen.
Brad and Bob were now groaning in pain while wondering what the hell just happened.

Bob: W-What did we do wrong...?

Brad: You didn't said hello to him...

(Meanwhile)

(y/n) was trying to catch his break after running like a mad man without stopping for a single second. The queen Celena got up from her throne and walked towards (y/n), thinking that something bad could have happened.

Celena: (y/n), what is wrong? What is the emergency?

Celena asked in a low tone of voice. But before getting her answer, (y/n) lifted a single finger to ask for a moment of pause.

(y/n): Meeting... Important... Late...

Celena: Uh... What?

(y/n) took a deep breath before putting his words together to give a coherent response to the queen.

(y/n): I was going to arrive late to the our meeting... So I rushed all the way here...

Celena: Oh, my dear... Why didn't you used magic to leviate here faster?

(y/n) grew a poker face... It never crossed his mind to use his magical gifts to make it faster and not look like an absolute mess.

(y/n): ...Can we please focus on our meeting?

(y/n) asked to avoid further humiliation.

Celena: Very well, (y/n)... Me and my husband have been talking for a while... And we also asked the other members of the magic high commission...

Celena placed a hand on (y/n)'s shoulder. She then lowered her hand fan enough to show a proudful smile. This was a surprise since Celena most of the time doesn't show those kind of gestures.

Celena: We all agreed on making you the newest member of the magic high commission. We think that there is no one better to replace your father.

(y/n): Is... Just that?

Celena: You are not surprised?

Celena asked in confusion. She clearly was expecting a more positive kind of reaction.

(y/n): Well, your husband kinda hinted it during my father's funeral so...

Celena quickly covered her mouth once again with her hand fan. Her eyes showed a clear sign of anger.

Celena(whispering): And everyone wonders why I preffer to keep secrets...

Celena whispered to herself. Logan might be a very skilled warrior... But now he was up for a problem that no amount of training could save him...
Since (y/n) saw Celena being a bit distracted, he fixed his throath to get her attention.

(y/n): My queen... Is this all or...?

Celena: Oh, right...

Celena was blushing in embarrasment. But luckly her hand fan covered her face enough to hide it.

Celena: This is not everything I wanted to adress in this meeting. I wanted to give you the title of member of the magic high commission in a ceremony... But I'm afraid that I already have a mission for you and one that only you can complete.

This quickly made (y/n) grow extremely nervous. How is it possible that the other members of the magic high commission, with all their powerful magic and lifetime of years worth of experience, can't deal with this?

(y/n): W-What about Rhombulus?

Celena: This is a mission where brute force is useless.

(y/n): Hekapoo and Omnitraxus?

Celena: They are both dealing with a group of criminals messing with magic scissors and time travel. Could you believe me if I were to tell you that they are stealing corn from the future to send it to other dimensions?

Whoever was behind that plan was probably a massive idiot or the most brilliant corn trafficker that has ever existed.

(y/n): W-What about Lekmet?!

???: BAAAAAAHHH!!!

(y/n): GAH!

(y/n) quickly turned around and saw Lekmet standing behind him. For being an old goat that can only communicate through bleating, he sure was very quiet...
(y/n) was taking deep breaths while looking at Lekmet. However, (y/n) quickly noticed that Lekmet was carrying a very familiar book between his hooves.

(y/n): Wait... That book... I have seen it before.

Celena: I thought so... This book was part of your grandfather's collection.

(y/n) now remained completely quiet. It has been far too longe since he heard anything about his grandfather. All (y/n) knew about his grandfather was that he was "different" from others. He was a master of the arcane arts but he was also... Missing a few screws. From what (y/n) heard, his grandfather or also known as "Urubin the purple magician", went through a self imposed exile to continue with his personal research to stop others from getting involed with his work. No one knew where he went or what happened to him. Many, including his own son, just assumed that Urubin died after many years. And thanks to Urubin's nature, no one really wanted to attempted to find him... While this gave (y/n) an idea of what he was dealing with, he didn't know what the queen wanted him to do.

(y/n): My queen... What do you want me to do?

Celena: Let me explain. While investigating your father's room, we found this book laying behind his bed. We didn't mind it too much at first until we opened the book...

Lekmet opened the book to show (y/n) that one of the pages of the book was missing.

Celena: The person who killed your father aslo took a page from this book. I would normally ask this to Lekmet but...

Lekmet was rubbing the back of his head in embarrasment.

Celena: He doesn't understand the language of the book...

(y/n): This book once belonged to my grandfather... Let me read it.

Lekmet handed the book to (y/n). He began to attemp to read it and it was very weird... He could not understand a single word of what was written in the book. But for some reason, he somehow was able to grasp the ideas of what was on it by just holding it. Some of the chapters talked about summoning rituals, others about creating technology that no one has ever seen... It was hard for (y/n) to comprehend how he was able to somehow understand any of the content of each chapter of the book. However, what really caught his attention was the chapter with the missing page... It was a chapter related to the use of magic and science at the same time.

Celena: Can you read it?

(y/n): It's... Complicated. I can't understand the words or letters of the book but I'm... Somehow able to comprehend the core contents of its chapters. It's like if the book was planting small parts of its knowledge inside my mind...

Celena: If that book belonged to your grandfather then it must have some kind of enchantment.  Maybe he only wanted members of his family to be able to learn the knowledge of this books?

(y/n): That's just not possible. If my grandfather's collection of books had something that important within them, my father would have told me about it... Unless...

(y/n) placed a hand under his chin while keep looking at the book's pages.

Celena: Unless?

(y/n) was flipping the pages of the book while deeply thinking. He was trying to get the whole picture of the situation.

(y/n): Unless my father was trying to hide something... The page that was stolen belongs to a chapter about some kind of "true" combination between science and magic. Mixing both in some kind of... Container?

Because (y/n) was unable to fully understand the content of the chapter, he was only able to learn about the key details of the chapter. However, trying to solve a puzzle is impossible if you are missing some pieces. Even if you had the most important ones.

Celena: But what does that mean?

(y/n): I can only speculate... But the person behind my father's death might be trying to get their hands on something that my grandfather studied for many years... Something that could be potentially dangerous.

Celena and Lekemet looked at each other in concern. The situation was more problematic than what they originally thought it was.

Celena moved her gaze to (y/n), who was still "reading" Urubin's book. She started to think this could potentially lead him into a deadly situation and because of that, she was unsure of what choice should she take. Let (y/n) keep investigating despite the possibility of him ending in a situation of life and death... Or stop him to protecting at the cost of Mewni's safety.
But then, the queen felt a hoove laying over her shoulder. She turned to her side and saw Lekmet looking at her with a smile.

Lekmet: Baaaaaah!

Celena perfectly understood what Lekmet was trying to say. This was a test that (y/n) needed to go through. Not only to prove that he is worthy of being part of the magic high commission. But also to learn more things about his family and about himself.
With a new found resolve, Celena decided to support (y/n) in this mission.

Celena: Alright, (y/n). What can we do to help you?

(y/n): My father kept all of Urubin's books inside wooden chest in his library. Send someone of trust to pick them up and bring them to my home.

Celena: The other books? Why do you need the others?

(y/n): Maybe the other books have more information that could prove to be useful. This won't help us find the murderer... But we will at least get an idea of what they are truly after.

(y/n) began to walk towards the door to leave the throne room. But before he could leave, Celena actually raised her voice to get his attention once more.

Celena: (y/n), wait a second!

(y/n): Yes my queen?

Celena: Are... Are you sure you want to do this?

Celena asked with concern. Even thought she was going to let (y/n) investigate, she wanted to hear it from him.

(y/n): Yes...

(y/n) answered with a cold tone.

(y/n): My father got poisoned by someone and now that person is moving to its next project. A project that could potentially harm many... I'm going to do whatever it takes to find this person and make them pay for what they did to my father and for touching my family's legacy!

(y/n) shouted loudly while clenching his fist. After seeing that, now the one worried was Lekmet... Through the years, he has seen many go through the path of revenge. It never ends well for the ones looking for revenge and for the others around them. But before the old goat could bleat, (y/n) already left the throne room.

(Time Skip)

(y/n): WHAT IN THE NAME OF ALCHEMY HAPPENED HERE?!?!

(y/n) was standing in front of his house or... Well, what was left of it.

(y/n) was looking in disbelief to what once was his home and place of work. Now what it took a lot of effort and tears to build was completely reduced to ashes and debris.

Scaramouche: My lovely handsome master with pointy ears... This is by no means what it looks like.

(y/n): You better have a good explanation or else I'm going to dismantle you!

Scaramouche: Calm down and do some katarsis...

(y/n) took a step foward while lifting his hands like if he wanted to separate Scaramouche's head from his body with his own bare hands.

Scaramouche: Alright! Alright! I was redecorating the basement when I suddenly heard the sound of glass breaking! I went up the stairs and saw a broken bottle pouring out green goo over the place! Then, that green goo quickly started to ignite everything! I ran away before the flames could make any of your other experiments explode!

(y/n) completely stopped on his tracks. A sudden expression of shock grew on his face.

(y/n): O-Oh...

(y/n) lowered his hands slowly. What he understood from Scaramouche's story is that someone mistook Scaramouche with him. That person probably thought that (y/n) was in the basement when in reality, it was Scaramouche making noises while trying to give the basement a new type of funk.
In other words... Someone, probably the same person whi killed Adam, just tried to murder (y/n) by burning him alive along with his home.

(y/n): Okay... The situation is bad! This is very bad!

Scaramouche: I'm sure the queen will let us live in the castle or build us a new home to blow up by ourselves. After all, that quiet angel has a heart made of butter.

(y/n): No, you don't get it. The castle is not safe for us right now... The same person who killed my father managed to sneak inside without alerting any form of security and now, as soon as I found out about something big... I became the new target. I managed to dodge an arrow thanks to a misscalculation from their part... But if that person managed to get such information so fast then...

Scaramouche: Master... Are you saying that the murderer worsks in the castle?

It was a good probability. It would explain how that person managed to avoid the security of the castle... But it also raised some other questions. The murderer couldn't just be a guard or a maid of the castle. The criminal behind this had to have some kind of close relationship with (y/n)'s father in order to learn about Urubin's book. But... The only one with interest and knowledge about science in Mewni is (y/n). Why would anyone related to Adam want to steal something that is worthless to them, to the point of killing him and then attempting to kill his son?
There was a lot that was still unclear...

Scaramouche: What are we gonna do?! We have to put you in a place where you won't run any danger!

(y/n): But where? The castle is not safe and no one in the kingdom of Mewni would want to have me as their tenant!

Scaramouche: Wait... I HAVE GROOVY IDEA!!!

(y/n): I'm afraid to ask... But what is on your mind?

(Time skip)

Hekapoo was resting on her couch after a long day of work. Her whole house was fileld with clones that were helping her to do regular stuff like laundry or just sweep the floor.

Hekapoo: Ugh... Who in their right mind uses time travel to steal corn from the future?

Hekapoo#2: Probably a guy with a very sad life.

Hekapoo#3: Yep! But since it's over, now we can have a nice day for ourselves!

Suddenly, someone knocked the door. This caught the attention of all the Hekapoos in the house. They don't usually get visits...

Hekapoo#2: Original, you are up!

Hekapoo: Do I have to?

Hekapoo#3: I mean, you are the one doing nothing besides sitting on the couch.

Hekapoo: Ugh...

The original Hekapoo lazyly got up from her couch and walked to the door.

Hekapoo: It better be important...

Hekapoo abruptly opened the door, ready to shout at whoever was in the other side. However, the surprise of who was behind the door completely changed her mood.

(y/n): Heeeey... Hekapoo.

(y/n) said in a awkward tone while doing pistol fingers.

Hekapoo: (y/n)...? What are you doing here?

Hekapoo#2: Wait, he is here?!

Hekapoo#3: This place is a mess and the cutie is here! This is the worst!

(y/n): ...Wait, wha-

Hekapoo glared at her clones. With a single thought, she made them disappear in a poof of smoke. She then turned back to (y/n) while nervously laughing.

Hekapoo: Pfft! Clones, am I right?

There was an awkward silence between the two of them that lasted for a brief moment. (y/n) took a deep breath and placed both of his hands on top of Hekapoo's shoulders. This made Hekapoo grew a bit nervous. The last time they were able to have some kind of an straight conversation was during Adam's funeral and she couldn't get an answer from (y/n). After that, Hekapoo was unable to visit (y/n) often do to her work and stupid things like the time traveler corn lover.
C-Could... Could it be that (y/n) came all this way to confess his love?!

(y/n): Hekapoo... Someone is trying to kill me and I need your help.

This... Wasn't the answer Hekapoo was waiting for. The fuzzy feeling that she felt for a couple of seconds in her chest was quickly replaced with a feeling of abosolute rage.

Hekapoo: Who?! Is it the murderer that poisoned your father?! I'll send that bastard to a horrible place like the shadow realm!

(y/n): I don't know yet who is after me... I don't know who to trust or where to go. Right now, in this horrible times, you are the only person that I can trust, Hekapoo.

This made that fuzzy feeling from before come back and grow even stronger than Hekapoo's feeling of rage. (y/n) trusted her so much to the point of placing the safety of his life in Hekapoo's hands.
Hekapoo grew a warm smile on her face and hugged (y/n) tightly. (y/n) hugged Hekapoo back in response, enjoying the warm relaxing feeling.

Hekapoo: You can stay here as long as you need.

Hekapoo said while still hugging (y/n).

(y/n): Thanks, Hekapoo... By the way, Scaramouche is with me.

Hekapoo: Wha-

Scaramouche suddenly walked into Hekapoo's home while carrying Urubin's collection of books.

Scaramouche: You two should get a room.

Hekapoo pulled away from the hug and glared at (y/n).

(y/n): Hehehe... You are not mad, are you?

(y/n) asked with fear. Sadly, the only answer he got was an ear pull from Hekapoo.

(y/n): AUCH! YOU ARE TOTALLY ANGRY!

Hekapoo: We have a lot to talk about, mister!

Hekapoo said before dragging (y/n) by the ear inside her house, with the door shutting itself behind them as soon as they made it inside.
Before being able to solve this whole mystery, (y/n) will have to survive Hekapoo's wrath... And Hekapoo will have to survive Scaramouche...
This was going to be a wild mission to complete.
