chapter 1
"Yes, Daddy," Sang Sorenson spoke into her phone, tilting her head back. Her long blonde locks fell over her nearly bare tan shoulders, and she smirked at her best friend who sat at her side. Her father began talking again, but instead of listening, she mimed talking with her hand and crossed her eyes, communicating her boredom to her friend, Mara Coriane. Mara giggled, also tilting her head back, her dark brown hair mixing with Sang's lighter shade. "Daddy! I promised you I'll behave myself! I know I have a reputation to maintain and I mean, how much trouble can I get in with these guys?"
"Are you really asking me that, Sang?" David Sorenson sounded less than amused with his daughter's flippant attitude. He was well aware she only called him daddy when she was trying to get what she wanted and what she wanted in the moment was for the phone call to end. His only daughter, his only child, was too sweet for her own good and he was afraid someone might take advantage of her while she was on vacation, even if she was with kids she'd known her entire life. "Just be careful, okay? I don't want anything to happen to you..."
Sang exhaled a sigh, standing up straight. The tips of her hair were wet from when she had gone swimming earlier and she impatiently brushed her hair away from her face. "Dad." Her voice was serious now. "I promise you I'll be careful. I have to go before Elliot and Lissa get here. We're going to dinner. I love you and I'll call you tomorrow morning, okay?"
"Okay," David muttered, though anyone could hear the sadness tainting his voice. "I love you too, sweetheart. I'll talk to you tomorrow."
Once the call ended, Sang slouched in her seat again, head tilted back. Mara reached out to rub Sang's shoulder but froze when her blonde friend flinched away. Mara slowly retracted her hand, aware that some days Sang was weary of being touched after the incident with her third step mother. Instead, Mara settled for patting her hand.
"He's going to be okay, Sang," Mara reassured her best friend. "He probably just doesn't know what to do without his favorite girl around."
"I should have stayed home for summer." Sang grumbled throwing an arm over her eyes to shield them from the sunlight.
"Why do I hear a pity party going on here?" An amused British accent reached Sang's ears. Sang grinned, sitting up to greet two of her other best friends, the Darling twins. Elliot and Lissa were of different genders but looked startlingly similar with their same pale blonde hair and icy blue eyes. Elliot leaned down and pulled Sang into a loose hug. Their last member of the group, Julian Barren, would be joining them a day late due to some Trust Fund Baby duties he had to take care of. "You're too pretty to be scowling like that."
"Says the model!" Sang exclaimed, gently punching Elliot in the shoulder. Elliot rolled his eyes and ruffled his hair before moving on to hug Mara. Lissa, who wasn't nearly as fond of hugging as her brother was, slouched down beside Sang, stretching out her long legs. Lissa squinted her eyes then reached out and squished Sang's cheeks.
"Smile, cutie," the paler blonde of the two demanded. "We're in fucking Bali! Celebrating getting into Ivy League colleges! I don't want to see any frowns."
Sang scowled and stuck her tongue out, then flicked her friend on the forehead. "I'm paying for this damn trip so I'll do what I want."
"Liss," Elliot spoke up, trying to sound stern but merely sounding entertained. "Leave the baby alone. Her and Mara need to get dressed so we can make it to our reservations."
Mara stood up and stretched, showing off her tanned skin that was already becoming even more tan. She grabbed her towel and wrapped it around herself. "You're sure I can't show up to this place in my bikini?"
Elliot didn't even grace her with a response, rather pulling Sang to her feet and ushering the two girls away from the pool and towards the hotel. Sang caught the towel Lissa threw to her, then followed Mara inside. She bit her lip, resisting the urge to complain about the fact that they had decided to go to a fancy restaurant instead of getting pizza. Was it really a vacation if she had to keep her Trust Fund Baby act up the entire time?
Twenty minutes later and Sang stepped out of the bathroom, fastening a necklace around her neck. She hadn't bothered with doing her makeup and did the bare minimum with her hair, merely pulling it up into a twisted knot on her head. Mara looked up from where she was examining herself in the mirror and rolled her eyes, noticing Sang's lack of makeup. She made a come hither movement with her fingers and Sang reluctantly shuffled across the plush carpet.
Mara grabbed her makeup bag and produced a tube of mascara and a tube of red lipstick. Sang's eyes widened and she shook her head, starting to back away but Mara grabbed her arm with a surprising amount of strength and applied the mascara one handed. When she finished, she nodded her head in approval then held out the red lipstick.
"I'm sure you can put that on by yourself, yes?" Mara asked, raising her eyebrows.
Sang rolled her eyes, an accustomed action around her friends. She nudged Mara out of the way then used the mirror to apply the dark red lipstick that matched her dress. The dress she had chose for the night was probably something name brand, but she couldn't care less let alone remember the name of it. It was pretty though, and she liked the feel of it. It had thin straps that tied at the small of her back, leaving her entire back bare. The silky material fell straight down to her feet with slits on both sides, staring at mid thigh. It showed a lot more skin than her father would be comfortable with, but he wasn't here to lecture her and it was hot out.
"Don't you look beautiful," Elliot cooed as he walked into the hotel room. Sang turned to face the door, narrowing her eyes at him.
"Where did you get a key card to our room?" Sang questioned, crossing her arms and pinning him with one of her infamous glares even if he was looking particularly dashing in a wine red button up with a black blazer and black dress pants.
He grinned and slipped said key card into the pocket of his pants. "I'll never tell."
"I gave it to him," Lissa explained as she walked into the room, closing the balcony door behind her and tossing her phone onto her bed. It bounced and nearly fell off, but she didn't seem too concerned. Sang winced at the fact that her friend was wearing a long sleeved black dress despite the heat. "He insisted on it. In case he needed to check on us or whatever."
"Or perv out on us," Mara said, giggling. She dodged a pillow that Elliot threw at her and slid on her black stilettos, apparently ready to go. Sang sighed and rooted through her suitcase until she found a pair of red heels that matched well enough in her opinion; it didn't exactly matter because they would most likely be gone half way through the night.
"I wish Julian was here," Sang teased her friends, grabbing her clutch off the bedside table where she had left it. Lissa wrapped an arm around Sang's neck, pulling her closer, nearly choking Sang. Sang scowled and swatted at Lissa's face. "He can control you brats."
"Oh, brats?" Elliot raised an eyebrow. Sang recognized that tone of voice and squealed, kicking off her heels sooner than she thought she would. She pulled open their hotel room door then tore down the hallway, laughing and holding her dress up to prevent tripping over it, beyond caring if she flashed someone; she was focused on escaping her friend.
When she reached the end of the hall where the elevator was, she began to smash at the button, impatiently waiting for the doors to open. She glanced behind her and noticed Elliot closing in on her, and without much thought, threw open the door to the stairs and raced down those. She released her dress to grip the railing, but then let out a yelp as her foot caught on the edge of her dress and she began to pitch down the steps. Before she could slam into the hard concrete of the stairs, though, arms went around her, preventing her from her impending doom.
"Woah, there," a sweet but deep voice met her ears, causing butterflies to soar through her stomach. "Don't wanna ruin that pretty face, do we?"
Sang smiled at the man who still had his arms around her, breathless from her near fall and the fact that he was too damn attractive to be human. His sea foam green eyes seemed to stare into the depth of her very soul and his sandy blond curls just begged for her fingers to run through it. She retracted her hands from his shoulders and busied them by pushing loose strands of hair away from her face.
"My bad." She giggled, glancing over her shoulder, anxious energy filtering through her as she remembered she was in the middle of a chase. "I was trying to-"
Her sentence was cut off by the door squeaking open and Elliot poking his head through it. He caught sight of her and grinned widely. "Sang Sorenson! Don't you dare move! I'm going to spank your pretty ass!"
Sang squealed and shoved at the handsome stranger's chest. "Move move move!"
Sean looked between Sang and Elliot, a spark of amusement in his eyes. "Do I even want to know what's going on?"
Sang pressed a finger to his lips, forcing him to shut up then grabbed his hand and dragged him down the stairs with her. She expected the stranger to pull away and ask what was going on, but instead, he held onto her hand, racing down the stairs with her, laughing just as much as she was. They reached the lobby in what felt like record time and Sang began to look around, wondering if she could find a hiding spot. When she saw the reception desk, an idea formed in her head and she wasted no time dashing across the lobby. She was sure she was going to get hell about this from her father later on, but she didn't care much. She was on vacation after all.
"What are you-" Sean began to ask but then burst into laughter as the pretty blonde vaulted over the reception desk causing the woman behind it to shriek. Sang crouched behind the desk and tugged on the woman's pants, demanding her attention.
"My name is Sang Sorenson," she whispered urgently. She could have rolled her eyes at the way the woman's eyes widened at Sang's last name, but instead waved her hand dismissively. "Shut up I know who I am and I know why it's a big deal. Elliot Darling is going to come down here looking for me and I need you to deny ever seeing me, okay? I am not behind this desk, and in fact, never even came through this lobby."
The woman nodded, though she was still wide eyed. Sean leaned against the desk, attempting to look casual. As much fun as it would be to watch Elliot try to find Sang, it would be even more fun to see the result of Elliot finding her.
It didn't take Elliot but five minutes to arrive at the desk, his hair ruffled and an eager smirk on his face. "Excuse me," he spoke to the woman, seeming not to notice Sean standing there. "Have you seen a short blonde in a red dress come through here? In other words, did you see Miss Sang Sorenson?"
"Sorry, sir, but no." The woman smiled apologetically though it came off as nervous. Elliot narrowed his eyes prepared to prod the truth out of her, but before he could, Sean was stepping in.
"I'm pretty sure I saw her hide behind the desk," Sean spoke loud enough that Sang could hear him.
Sang's eyes widened and she jumped to her feet, pointing an accusing finger at Sean. "Traitor!" She shouted then slid around the desk and sprinted towards the doors that lead out to the beach. Elliot chased after her, throwing a thank you over his shoulder to a laughing Sean.
Sang raced across the beach, her feet sinking into the warm sand. Her eyes landed on the ocean that was only a few feet away, a plan forming in her mind, but before it could all come together, she was slamming into a hard body. She crashed into the body then into the warm sand, her body groaning in protest.
"Motherfucker! Ow shit." Sang cried out, her ankle aching from the way it rolled when she made contact with the body. "Agh."
Crystal blue eyes swam into her view, concern reflected in them. Soft looking red-brown hair swam into her view too but she was too busy massaging at her ankle to really appraise how good looking he was. She slowly began to sit up with the help of the new attractive stranger.
"Are you alright?" Nathan asked, pretending not to be shocked by how green her eyes were in real life. She nodded, though another groan escaped her lips as he helped her stand. There was no way she would be wearing heels to dinner with her ankle throbbing like this.
"Yeah, I think I'm okay," she said, trying to apply pressure to her ankle only to wince. She opened her mouth, prepared to apologize for running into him, but before the words could make it past her lips a body slammed into hers and a scream ripped from her mouth. She tumbled into the sand again with a body laying on top of her. "Son of a bitch! Didn't you see I was having a conversation?"
"I saw," Elliot replied, climbing off her but holding her down with one hand. She squirmed, trying to escape but huffed, aware that he was way stronger than her. "And I didn't care, because like I said, your pretty ass needs to be spanked." Before she even got the chance to squeal, his hand was coming down and smacking her butt.
A sting spread through her butt but she ignored it, using Elliot's shoulder to help herself stand. "Ugh, I hate you," she grumbled but then squeaked as he threw her over his shoulder. She was almost 100% sure that she was flashing the attractive stranger. "Elliot! Elliot, put me down! There's going to be photos of my underwear all over the tabloids. You have to put me down."
"Dude," Nathan spoke up, frowning at the way Elliot was treating Sang. He briefly wondered if the two were dating but then shook it off. "You shouldn't be so rough with her. She's a lot tinier than you."
"She's fine," Elliot declared, resting a hand on Sang's thigh to hold her dress in place to prevent anything from showing. "We'll be on our way now. We have dinner reservations to make."
Nathan watched the two walk away; Sang kicking and screaming while Elliot dropped his hand against her thigh to silence her. There was only one thought going through his head: the mission was sure as hell going to get interesting if that was the girl they were dealing with.
