4. Status and Assumptions

Marinette came home way later than usual that night. You heard the door slam shut, followed with your sister's nervous rambling.

You opened your door and crept out of your room. "Marinette?" You called softly, knowing your parents were asleep and would disapprove of her being out past curfew.

Marinette stiffened at the sound of your voice. Her mind was swarmed with the memories from the day, and she felt horrible for how she treated you as Ladybug.

She thought that if she approached you as her alter ego she would have an easier time talking to you and maybe get a sort of idea of what was running through your mind, along with her own.

She was so wrong.

Marinette was full of negative emotions but she tried her damndest to keep them away.

Not only did she manage to hurt you again, but her breakup with her boyfriend was really taking a toll on her. She knew it wasn't your fault that she chose the wrong boy to be with. She also knew it wasn't your fault that Master Fu was gone and left her alone with their secrets.

She knew all of that. "Go away, Y/n." She knew all of it wasn't your fault, but who else was there to blame if not herself?

The two of you had been interacting like this for years so it came to no surprise that she was pushing you away again.

You first noticed her bloodshot eyes that were slowly swelling, and the slight downward curve of her eyes and mouth. "Marinette, what's wrong? Did something happen?" You asked gently, stepping towards her—ignoring her previous demand.

She hated you.

She hated you for being everything she wanted to be. Marinette couldn't understand why you cared about her feelings after she stomped on yours.

It pissed her off. "Even if something happened Y/n, it's none of your damn business!" She yelled.

Your eyes widened at how loud she yelled.

"Marinette—you're gonna-"

"God, would you just shut up!?" She screamed, and dammit now she was crying but she no longer cared.

She hated you, she hated herself, she hated how she treated Luka, she hated how she couldn't tell Adrien how she felt, and she especially hated this huge burden of a secret that she was now alone with.

Marinette didn't give you another chance to respond before she was in your face again, "I'm warning you Y/n, just mind your own damn business. You've been trying to ruin my life as long as I can remember so just stop with this loving sister act. It's bullshit!" She sneered, her face so close to yours that you could slam your head into hers with hardly moving if you wanted.

You had enough. Your teeth grinder together and your nails pierced your skin. Anger controlling your every move, you lifted your hands and shoved her hard.

Her back slammed into the stair railing.

"You bitch-" she cried out, trying to stand again.

You stormed over, leaning forward and staring her right in her eyes. "You're done with the sister act?" Your eyes slitted. "Fine. I'm done trying with you. You're fucking impossible."

When you turned, Marinette kicked you on the back of your knees, sweeping your legs out from under you before they got the chance to fully buckle.

You landed on the ground with a loud thud. She charged you, screaming and pinned you to the ground. The back of your head slammed against the floor and when you opened your eyes you were met with Marinette above you, a fist clenched and ready to fire.

You gripped the arm that she used to push down on your chest and held up your opposite arm to block her throw.

"What in the world is going on out here?!" Your mother shrieked.

Air returned to your lungs as your father ripped Marinette off you, still screaming.

Your mother slowly pulled you up by the arm and placed her hand on the back of your head. When you saw the blood trickling down her fingers your eyes went blurry.

The cut on your head stung and a string of curses left your lips.

"I understand the two of you are having trouble getting along, but physically fighting is never okay!" Your father yelled.

"Marinette came in late and I was asking her why she looked so sad and she flipped out at me-"

"And then you attacked me!" Marinette screamed, pointing an accusing finger.

"I didn't fucking attack you, I pushed you because you were all up in my face!" You retaliated, just as loudly.

"Y/n! Language!" Your mother yelled and you looked at her with a baffled expression. Parents really pick ridiculous things to be mad about at the strangest times.

"If anyone attacked someone it was you Marinette! You literally were about to punch me in the face!" You yelled and realized you were sobbing. Your mother held your head gently against her chest and let you cry.

Your parents looked back and forth between the two of you, completely lost. The two of you always struggled to get along with each other but it only got worse the older you both got.

"Marinette you know the curfew, why were you coming in so late?" Your father asked and she stiffened.

"Tom, we'll talk about that tomorrow," your mother spoke as she narrowed in her vision on Marinette, "Your sister hasn't even been back in town a week Marinette. If the story Y/n told was true then you really need to try harder to be nice to your sister. Finding you on top of her with a fist in the air is never okay." Your mother's voice was terrifying and the fear in your sister was visible.

Your mother sighed and looked back and forth between the two of you. "Marinette, are you bleeding anywhere?" She asked and your sister shook her head.

"Just sore." She whispered.

**

The night dragged on and your mother forced you to go to the emergency room to check your head for a concussion. She kept reminding you how lucky you were on the way home that it was just a cut and nothing more.

Now, you were forced to walk side by side with your sister as you walked to school. Your parents thought if they knew you were walking together that you would talk it out.

They were wrong, kinda dumb of them if you ask me (but I'm just the narrator so my opinion doesn't matter.)

You both got minimal punishments for fighting, which entailed of the two of you putting in time working at the bakery to. You helped your parents open the store before school and Marinette closed.

Marinette however, was grounded for sneaking in late past curfew. She never did say where she was, which only extended her grounding for an extra week.

You rubbed your eyes sleepily and drank your coffee as you walked. You hated the taste, and your parents wouldn't let you have a monster, but you got no sleep after spending the night in the ER so the coffee would do.

You walked into the court yard and found Juleka and Rose sitting together on one of the benches. Not minding at all that you would be third wheeling, you took a seat with them.

"Y/n, dear, are you okay?" Rose asked as she reached over to hold your hand with a worried look on her face.

You nodded softly. "Slipped and hit my head last night, so I spent most of the night in the emergency room." You sighed as you held up your coffee and pointed to your eye bags.

Marinette, who was standing close by with Alya, heard your excuse and frowned. She didn't understand why you were lying about it.

"You need some fun Y/n! I hate that you have been so miserable now that you've been back." Rose spoke with a frown and you could see the tears welling in her eyes.

You felt a pang in your chest at your cheery friend's sad expression. She was right of course, you had been miserable now that you were back in Paris, but you wish she hadn't noticed.

You hadn't realized your grumpy feelings were hurting your friends as well.

"She could come watch our band." Juleka spoke softly and her voice was muffled by the strands of hair covering her face.

"That's a great idea Jules!" Rose smiled and hugged Juleka tightly, "You definitely should come watch us play! We practice at Juleka's house on the barge."

You smiled brightly, loving that your friends had finally formed the band they always hoped too. "I'd love to come, is it tonight?" You asked and they nodded.

You mentally noted that you would be taking a nap instead of doing your homework once you got home. "I'll be there."

**

You had a difficult time convincing your parents to let you out of the house. Your father thought you should be grounded along with Marinette for pushing her, but your mother reminded him that they decided you working in the bakery was punishment enough.

You eventually left, ignoring Marinette's nasty stare as you walked away.

You made it to the barge as the sun set, meaning you only had about two hours before you needed to get home. You decided to ignore that small factor, you were determined to have fun for Juleka and Rose's sake.

"I was hoping if we played tonight he would feel better." You stepped aboard to hear Juleka sadly muttering to her band mates.

"I didn't even realize they broke up!" Rose exclaimed and you tilted your head in confusion. 'Who broke up with who?'

"Y/n!" Rose greeted you.

"Hey you guys, what's going on?" You asked.

"It's my brother." Juleka whispered sadly.

You glanced towards Rose for clarification. "I'm sure you know about Luka and Marinette's breakup-" Rose began but you shook your head almost instantly.

"No? I didn't know Marinette had a boyfriend. Is Luka your brother?" You asked Juleka who nodded, looking surprised that you didn't know about the breakup.

Almost on cue, someone approached the group you all were standing in.

"Alright I thought about it and I think playing would make me feel better." You looked up and saw the blue haired boy that Marinette had left with at school yesterday.

Rose moved towards him to tell him how excited she was he decided to play when his eyes locked on you.

The moment was the strangest thing you had ever experienced. It felt as if time had stopped, the wind around you had calmed down and the leaves on the ground came to a halt.

His deep blue he's widened, saddening at the sight of you. "You look just like her." He whispered.

Every part of you stiffened.

Your friends all looked at you and back up at Luka. "This is Marinette's twin sister Y/n, she was in New York for a year." Mylene explained for you, noticing how his statement stunned you.

Luka seemed to be lost for words.

He held your stare and it was staring to get uncomfortable. You had no idea what he was thinking.

He shook his head and turned his back towards all of you, no longer able to bare looking at you. "I changed my mind—I can't do this." He walked away leaving all of you incredibly confused.

Which is when the frustration set in.

Not only did he compare you to your sister before he even learned who you were, but he was robbing your friends of the fun night they wanted to have with you.

You clenched your fists and the anger boiled over.

What's the point of trying to suppress it anyways?

"Like hell he can't do this!" You yelled, stomping off in the direction he left in.

You quickly found yourself wandering the halls of the house boat. Luka had walked away quickly, so you were struggling to find the hall he turned into.

"Luka!" You called angrily, with no response.

"Luka come out you little—" You were interrupted by someone grabbing your elbow and dragging you into a room.

"What the fu-"

"Hey, would you please stop yelling?" Luka was now standing in front of you, with his eyes directed towards the floor.

His voice was soft, calming you so immediately.

But the clarity was ruined when you noticed how desperately he was trying to avoid making eye contact with you.

"Are you seriously not practicing with your friends because of me?" You asked, feeling pathetic with how broken your voice sounded.

You were no longer feeling so angry, just sad that all you had done since you had been back was make people upset.

You knew you could be a downer, but you hadn't realized it was that bad.

Luka took in a sharp, stressed breath, and looked up at you. He was shaking and still had a strong grip on your arm. "Y/n—was it?" He asked and you nodded. "I'm sorry for being rude to you, I promise that wasn't my intention."

"You have a funny way of showing it." You snorted.

"I didn't even know Marinette had a sister, which further clarifies how messed up our relationship must've been." He sighed and released his grip on you.

You shrugged. "She hates me so I'm not surprised you don't know about me."

"I didn't think Marinette could hate anyone. Well except anyone who loves Adrien I guess." He thought out loud, almost with a wispy sound and expression.

You snorted, "Bingo. Which is exactly why she hates me at the moment." You began to sort through all of the reasons mentally why she has hated you over the years.

Luka looked surprised, "You love Adrien too?" He sighed, feeling like he couldn't escape the never ending love everyone seemed to have for Adrien Agreste.

You looked away and your eyes landed on a Jagged Stone poster. It was half ripped and you wondered why it was still up there.

"That's...complicated." You admitted, not wanting to get into detail about your feelings to a stranger.

A stranger who was your sisters ex at that.

"I'm sorry you didn't get to see a show how you expected it Y/n," you were insanely relieved that he stopped asking about Adrien, "How about we go back up there and we can at least play you a song?" He asked.

You would really like to hear a song, maybe even play one. You looked up at him and smiled softly, "I'd love that."
