Bedsheets
Writing poems eases my pain
Like ice cubes slowly melting under the summer sun.
I smile more often,
But I still feel broken
It comes at night,
When I am alone
With my thoughts.
In harsh waves it strikes,
Drowning me and causing the water to fill myself up with bittersweet memories of you
It sits there, lapping against my walls
And eroding them.
I try to block these thoughts but they eventually break through,
Causing a cry to burst from my throat.
The water pours out,
Salty tears soaking my pillow.
I sob silently into the pillow,
Feeling the emptiness at my back where you would sleep, spooning me.
Both of us had insomnia, so we’d talk late into the early mornings,
Sharing secrets through hushed whispers.
When you would jolt awake, shuddering and empty-eyed,
I would know that you had a nightmare,
And I’d talk through it with you, tell you those days were behind us.
We only had to look forwards into the light.
I guess it’s easier to smile in the day
Because I’m not in a bed that feels too big,
The covers your favorite colour,
Your smell still clinging to the bedsheets, somehow.
I guess it’s because I can push you to the back of my mind,
As thoughts of peace fill my mind.
But still,
I try hard to cling to my dreams
Because we’re together in that happy land,
Not a care in the world, nor pain in our hearts.
And I can forget that We’re just You and I now.
