"Sometimes the road of life takes an unexpected turn and you have no choice but to follow it to end up in the place you are supposed to be."

Prologue:

The rain crashed on the window shield-like bullets, obscuring the already indiscernible view ahead.

The night had shed its black veil, covering the vast sky with milky blackness. The road lamps shivered from the winter chill, flickering unsteadily till their light froze or completely died off while the wind whistled tunes of death.

The car lurched forward on the asphalted road, it's black coat shipped and riddled with scars from nature's rough touch, neglect, and the heavy burden of vehicles that kneads it's back nonstop, marring the surface with cracks and chips.

The current car passing was oblivious to its distorted shape and kept its speed, undeterred by the fog that thickened.

"The weather is fucked up man! Cant, we postponed the mission till this blasted sky stopped urinating on us?! Where the hell does it store all this shit! If it was me, my balls -" A guy in his late teens, sitting in the passenger seat grumbled, glaring at the starless sky with venom while rubbing his palms on his thighs in hopes of creating some heat.

Another man with featured roughened from constant frowning interrupted his blabbering companion, "Shut your filthy trap, Garret! Can't you see I am trying to focus on the road in this blasted weather? And if you wanted some explanation, you should've considered changing your occupation. I am not a goddamned weather sissy!!"

Garret snorted, folding his hands against his chest defensively, "Whatever dude! I'd kill for some booze and a warm cunt to heat my chilled skin, but this fucking weather is making our mission take longer than necessary. Besides, the car reeks and I want to get rid of this bloody motherfucker in the trunk as soon as possible - Daniel, are you listening to me?"

"Yes, Yes, you whiny piece of shit! My eyes are on the road but my ears are listening, so stop your bitching! Fuck my luck! How the hell did I get saddled with a babbling teenager as a partner,"

"Oy! I'm right here you grumpy old stick! If you don't want me to be your partner, go complain to the Big boss. I didn't ask to be partnered with a bitchy crook like you! when I first joined the 'Reapers' I thought I'd be a lone wolf, doing missions alone and getting the full prize instead of splitting it with a broody, boring geezer! I'd make-"

"Bah! I swear on Satan's ass that your squeaky voice got my eardrums popped!"

"Piss of Danny boy, I can't help how my voice sounds like,"

"What the fuck did you call me?! I'll screw your-" he glared at Garret, his right hand abandoning the steering wheel to smack the young lad on the back of his blond head.

"Daniel watch out!!" Garret snapped as Daniel returned his gaze back on the path, maneuvering a dead object that was left abandoned on the road - most likely a dead animal from its size or a fallen object that was left from a speeding truck.

What appears to be a malnourished, dead deer was lying lifeless in a heap of flesh in the middle of the road, the car swerved to the right trying to avoid it. It jolted up and down as if shocked by lightning. Water splashed furiously from the front as the tires sank into a water-filled hole. A weird sound was emitted, but they shrugged it off as something the wheels have mauled.

"Fuck, that was close! We almost turned into a sack of bones," Garret laughed uneasily, his eyes trained outsides the window on the trees and sharpened rocks.

It's like a minefield! A road littered with traps! But why would they suggest we take it?! Garret wondered silently. They probably didn't know the miserable state the place is in.

Daniel grunted, "And whose fault is that? If you were able to snag a more modern car instead of this piece of junk we wouldn't have been here in the first place! We would've finished long ago, but no! We had to get this worthless shit to work multiple times, get delayed with that hero-pretending-fucker and YOU, pissing yourself at the sight of blood and dead bodies. I swear that the first thing I'll do when we finish this cursed mission is reporting your incompetence to the boss and then I won't have to babysit you!" Daniel's grip tightened, his eyes focusing anew on the road that could've killed them a moment ago.

Tall, lanky, and spineless trees appeared on both sides of the road. Some of them have shed their green attire, adopting a brown gown to match the earth beneath while others preferred to embrace the weather in their naked state. They cuddled the road from both sides, there multi-hands reaching to claw at both: the sky and the road.

"Shut up! You are one to talk! You were dragging that man, whining like a bitch in heat about how heavy he is while I had to get the car working without keys. Besides, you are the one behind the wheel, so don't throw this shit on me!"

"Yeah, well once we get rid of the body, I'll demand to go solo. This job is taking its toll on me with all these ninny-bitches-for-partners that I got assigned with and dirty, greedy men who can't get their shit done by themselves. If not for their overflowing bank account I would've killed them the moment they opened their mouth,"

"Same thing! Did you see that guy with the juggling belly? - Of course, you did he took out almost all the room - anyway, he was sweating like a pig and muttering like a lunatic. Do you think the man he ordered us to eliminate is someone important? Because that Nath-something looked scared as hell," Garret voiced his concern while gazing out of the window. Daniel's insult passed like a breeze through his dimwitted brain.

The atmosphere, their surroundings, and the almost death experience had casted a grim and eerie feeling inside their guts, twisting like a knife of impending doom.

"I don't know man! But the sooner we get this done, the better. I had a bad feeling about this the moment I saw the guy at the strip club and the ambiguous and incomplete data we were given about him only increased the feeling,"

"Hmm...how 'bout we drop him here? They asked us to get rid of him, so why not here? I think it's far enough! Besides, with the head injury and the bruises we gave him, I doubt he'll be able to survive the night. Maybe the wild animals around here will feast on his rich ass and get our job done for us?!" Garret suggested as they passed a shabby and rusty sign declaring that they are now in Haven City.

"Maybe, we should-"

"I think it's best to get rid of him at the destination assigned, otherwise we won't be paid in full and Big boss will eat us for dinner," Daniel interrupted unperturbed.

"Hmm...it's not like they are going to find out. It's-"

The screech of a Range Rover interrupted Garret's words. Its unrelenting speed sent shivers of fear to crawl their spine. Daniel tried to steer the car away from it, but with the road, soapy from the rain, spun like a Mary- go-round. The Impact was swift and sudden, rendering the old junk, a worthless piece of never-to-be-used-again kind of junk with two unconscious bodies.

Four men garbed in black stepped out of the giant car that barely gained a bruised light on its front side. They appraised the car's position. One man took what looked like a gun and emptied its bullets in the dead car's front, triggering a flare of smoke to erupt with a vengeance accompanied by a trickling sound of rain and fuel. The fuel seeped under the car from a punctured hole in the fuel tank.

The men rode their Range Rover away from the scene but not before they finished the car and its occupants with one final bullet that set it aflame.

On their merry way, they went. Leaving behind one indistinguishable vehicle, two dead, fried bodies and a single, bloodied man snuggled between bare branches and chipped, mismatched rocks.

The once monotonous and boring small city of Haven is about to get its peaceful time shattered by a witness, a crime scene, and a whole new adventure.

Hello everyone!

I am rewriting this story that I took down before because I lacked the motivation to continue writing it. However, now I have a new bunch of ideas for it that I hope you like :)

🙈🙈🙈 I am not proud of the languages I used in this chapter, I don't like profanity and cursing, but I had to write some of it to portray the characters background and profession in this chapter.

*cleaning hands and mouth with soap*

Please note that English is not my first language and I am typing on my phone. So, there will be some grammatical and punctuation mistakes that I hope with your help I can edit. So don't hesitate to point out the errors for me to fix.

Lastly, if you like the story don't forget to show your support.
