Special And Important
Elsa stepped out of the fireplace with Harry in tow. She had almost stumbled but she managed to catch herself before she faceplant herself on the floor of the establishment that she just entered. Harry was quiet as he clung to her. Just hearing that they will be in London was enough to make the boy wary and alert. She moved out as the green flames behind her flared and spitting out Danny who stumbled and rolled onto his feet in one smooth move. He then calmly patted down his body to shake out the ashes.
He looked at her and Harry, "You two alright?"
It had taken Danny awhile to get their fireplace hooked onto the Floo Network. Part of the reason why was because the wizard that was supposed to add their fireplace onto the traveling network of fireplaces was leery of coming to the Shrieking Shack. Well, considering the rumors, no one can blame him.
Elsa took a moment to check on Harry, his scar once again hidden, and nodded, "We are alright,"
Danny smiled, gathering his family close, "Good. I just don't think that taking the Knight Bus would do good on a full stomach," He had told her about his rather interesting experience taking the bus the last time he visited Diagon Alley. When he last took Elsa and Harry to London, he had used a ghost portal. But he wanted Harry to get used to magical means of traveling so he decided to investigate all the methods that witches and wizards have created for travel.
Elsa will not take much stock on Danny's 'interesting' evaluation. After all, as a ghost, anything that was 'interesting' to him might not be healthy for either her or Harry. Even the traveling through fire was rather dizzying for her. Fortunately, Harry didn't throw up his breakfast. That said, the Knight Bus must be worse on the stomach.
After taking a moment, Danny took her to the back and picked Harry, "Alright. This is where you shine, Harry, Just touch the bricks as I told you. 3 up, 2 across,"
Harry asked, "Like a cross?"
"Yeah,"
He patted the bricks and they came alive, shifting to creating a doorway. Harry giggled at the sight before settling down and clung to Danny. Danny decided to put the boy on his shoulders, causing Harry to squeal a little before he grew more animated, chattering and 'reporting' to them what his eyes can see from Danny's shoulders. Danny wrapped a free hand around her waist, pulling her close and almost engulfing her in his dark grey duster that he preferred over the cloaks and robes that wizards wear. He would not looked out of place if he just walked out onto the street of mundane London.
She herself decided to fit in and wear one of the elegant witch robes bought from Hogsmeade. A dark violet robe designed to look like a dress with thick black belt around her waist worn over fluttering pastel orange dress, the hanging sleeves adding some dramatic flare to her silhouette while the under sleeve was partly covered by black velvet gloves. Black travel boots covered her feet. She wore a black hat with black veil over her eyes, with dark red roses pinned to the side. Her blond hair up in a bun.
She also put Harry in something more aligned to child wizard's fashion. His forest green robe have splits up the sides and for rough physical activities, fall leaves in dark orange and brown were embroidered on his shoulders and the hem of his calf length robe. Bright pumpkin orange scarf was tide around his neck. Red beanie covered his head and over his scar, a large orange pompom made to shape like a pumpkin bobbing on top of it. Matching mittens covered his hands with the underside stitched to have dark grinning pumpkin faces over the brighter orange palm. Harry was tastefully dressed for the season. Unlike his parents, he was dressed for the cold.
Danny took them first to the bank, where Elsa tried not let the double takes of the goblins there distract her. He went to the VIP counter and waited for his turn behind a family of blonds. After a moment, the man before them huffed, cane in hand as he escorted his partner away. The small blond boy following closely between the folds of their voluminous robes. Elsa noticed the barely concealed disdain look he sent at Danny for his mundane fashion choice. Danny either didn't notice or simply ignored him as he grinned at the gobsmacked goblin, "Hi! I want to withdraw some money from my account. Vault 8888?"
The goblin, someone named Grouch, stared at Danny for a moment before asking, "Key...please?"
He sounded like he was choking on the word 'please'. Elsa smiled at the teller whose forced smile turned slightly more genuine as he accepted Danny's card shaped key. He stared at the odd shape for a moment before huffing and getting to work, "How much money would you like to withdraw, sir?"
Within the next few minutes, Elsa observed their surroundings. The plan today was to visit the boutique there for her wedding dress. Elsa didn't mind wearing something simple but Danny and Jazz insisted. In her time, most women would simply wear their best and marry their husband like that. Of course, for those with money, they will either commission something new or alter one that was passed down from mother to daughter. Also, it still boggled her mind that people would wear white on their wedding dress. Something about the sanctity of the virgin bride? It was started by the late Queen Victoria of the Great British Empire but the sight of her in such pure white wedding dress became a sort of wedding craze that was carried into the modern era.
But since her husband-to-be wanted to see her in something like that, who was she to deny him? This wasn't just her wedding, it was his too. So it was only right that she let him decide parts of the wedding. Danny told her that this was more than just a wedding to give Harry a proper family and a real mother. It was also a wedding of two separate monarchs. His for the ghosts and her for the faeries.
But Elsa also took the time to look around, studying the society. People remained people no matter the era. Perhaps cleaner and healthier, but they still go about their life trying to make ends meet and keep a roof over their head if not food on their table. Except she have never seen so much magic being performed around her. The place breathed with magic. It was like condensation in her hair. Invisible yet carried weight.
Harry squealed a few times when birds carrying parcels flew over their heads. Most of the times, they were owls. But she saw a few different but large sized birds doing similar job. Danny leaned to her and asked, "Should we get an owl too? If we are, I'm going to name it Spooky,"
She smiled at his silly naming skill. Danny have a habit of naming things too much on the nose, she noticed. If he couldn't find a 'proper' name, he just called it 'The Thing' or 'thingamawhat'. Despite being such a serious man at work, he remained a child a heart. One that he freely expressed around them. Elsa have seen him furiously arguing with a particularly stubborn bureaucrat in his office on his computer screen before deciding to just face the idiot personally instead of through the screen. That was the first time she saw the Warrior King in him. A King that was born through trial by fire, who earned his throne through conquest. Danny was not a soft hearted King. He wasn't born and bred for the throne like she was. He was, for all that he was a family man, a warlord of old.
"Sometimes they think they are safe if I stay behind screen,"
He tried to be civil because he was born in a time of law and civilized discussion. Unfortunately, his opponent weren't one that was born in a time where law was what was right and not what they wanted it to be. So in the end, Danny have no choice but the speak the language that they understand the most; violence.
But seeing the way he switch from his warlord persona to his family man persona made her feel special. She was sure that Jazz and Harry also felt special. He treated them kinder and gentler than he did with the bureaucrats that he had to deal with on the daily. Granted, he never lose his temper around them. He was also very patient with Harry when the boy have his moments of rebellion. Well, Danny have an easy way to show the boy why some ideas were bad ideas; he just needed to show him the ghosts that did the same things Harry tried doing.
Needless to say, seeing people who died doing stupid things was enough to put the boy back in his lane.
Harry swung his legs, "Birds! Birds! I want to see birds!"
Danny grabbed his swinging legs, "Hey! Watch my face! That wasn't nice, Harry. Just ask me nicely and I will see if we can go, alright?"
Harry hugged his head, "Okay..."
Elsa giggled at the sight. She was grateful that Harry was a reasonable kid. She have had her share of unreasonable children who refused to listen to advices or lectures. Those were the type that only listen when someone overpowered them. Some listen when physically removed. A few needed a firmer hand.
Elsa noticed that modern people tended to think that anything other than time out and a lengthy lecture was child abuse. Well, she thinks that if she didn't correct her child when they have yet to be set in their way, she would be doing them a disservice in the future. As for those that thinks that children were all little angels? Well. Clearly they have never dealt with more than one child. Over indulging a child's bad behavior will one day backfire horribly as the adult world can be heartless and cruel.
A screech caught her attention as a white old looked at the family. It screeched at Danny and Harry. Harry waved his mitten at it, cooing, "Dad? Look! Spooky!"
Danny looked at the owl before looking at Elsa who sighed, "You are the one said that whatever owl we buy will be named Spooky. I think Harry just decided that this owl is Spooky,"
Danny blinked, realizing that Harry had taken his word to heart and now he needed to buy the owl or the boy will be moody for the rest of the day. He stared at the owl who fluffed up, looking at them. It then flew down and Danny raised his hand where it settled on his forearm.
The staff saw it and shrugged, "Never seen this one being friendly with anyone before. He usually chased people off," He grinned, "I'll give you the bird for 40% off!"
Elsa looked at him, "Why the discount?"
He shrugged, "He scared away most of my customers and bully the other animals. I just want him out!"
Harry wagged a finger at the white owl, "No bullying. That's not nice, Spooky,"
Spooky hooted at him, snapping his black beak playfully at the boy's mitt covered finger. Danny sighed and he pullet out wallet. He managed to ask Albus to 'amuse him' with an experiment; enlarging the space of one of his wallet's pocket. Now he can carry both his mundane money and his wizard money in one wallet. He paid the price for the owl and then looked at it, "I'm not carrying all day in Diagon Alley. Head to the Shrieking Shack," He looked at the man, "I'm going to browse for all the necessary things for an owl," He looked at Harry, "That I am sure my son and wife will pamper until it's plumper than a Thanksgiving turkey. Just send it over the Shrieking Shack. Yes! I live there. Happily too with all the ghosts and other things that go bump in the night. Honestly? The creepiest thing there is the dullahan haunting the hill," He grinned at the disbelieving wizard behind the counter.
Elsa started helping his choose all the things that an owl would like. But it seemed the Spooky wanted to make his own choices to so now they watched as the owl picked whatever things he fancied and put it on the counter. Danny whistled, "Smart owl,"
Harry grinned, "Spooky is our owl! Of course he's smart!"
Once everything was packed and paid for, Elsa watched Harry bid goodbye to their new family member. All this happened with him on Danny's shoulder. The family left the owl emporium and through the crowded street. Elsa felt Danny's free arm wrapping around her shoulders, pulling her close so that they won't be separated. She decided to take the chance and wrapped one arm around his waist. She felt his hand on her shoulder twitch before squeezing lightly.
She relaxed a little by the silent consent.
They studied numerous store, Elsa's eyes sparkling at the sight of the bookstores and Danny laughing as he pretended as if pulling her away was the hardest thing in life. Harry mimed him as if fishing her and reeling her in. Elsa laughed at their antic as the two boys whined, "Elsa/Mum! Come on! We gotta go!"
She relented.
Danny pulled her close and whispered, "Another day,"
She giggled, "Okay,"
They finally reached the famous boutique; Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions. Danny finally put Harry down while Elsa separated from him to browse the store. It was bigger on the inside, expansion charm put to good use, and displayed many magical fabrics and numerous designs on mannequins that moved to pose.
Elsa sought for a staff and a small woman with a measuring tape around her neck greeted her, "Hello. Welcome to Madam Malkin. How can I help you, miss?"
Elsa smiled, ignoring how her brown eyes eyed her up and down, asking, "Do you have anything for wedding?"
The witch smiled, "Yes we do! What sort of dress robes do you need? Are you the best woman or...?"
Elsa couldn't help her blush, "I'm the bride,"
The witch whose expression once looked close to fainting from fatigue brightened and it was as if she was given a shot of Danny's special ectoplasm infused energy drinks. She once saw him moving like a hurricane in his office while talking a mile a second to the congregation of ghosts from different eras who struggled to keep up with him. Once he completed everything, he completely crashed on the couch inside his office. He didn't even wake up when Harry doodled on his face though he twitched a little in response to the ticklish markers.
Which was alarming at first since he was such a light sleeper.
Jazz calmed her down, saying he must have crashed from his caffeine powered adrenaline that didn't exactly stopped him from feeling tired but rather blocked him from feeling sleepy. The fatigue was then accumulated until the effect of caffeine ended.
But Danny and his only known weakness aside, Elsa recognized that look on her face as she brought out a thick book full of wedding dress designs. Although the witches and wizards have their own preferred fashion and culture, like another country within a country, it cannot be helped that some of the mundane world's taste will bleed through into theirs. But the girl was oddly careful to only show her the more 'traditional' witch dresses when Elsa stopped her and turn her pages, "Tell me about these ones,"
The girl grinned when she realized that Elsa did not really care about 'tradition' like a pureblood elite. She giddily started presenting more styles to Elsa, gushing over where she came across the ideas and the likes. Elsa was more interested in these 'new' styles than she was the traditional ones. She have been told that she was ahead of her time more than she could care for. She exposed her shoulders in an era where women covered even their hairs. She cut a slit up her dress in a time where women wore socks to hide their legs. She wore dresses that draped over her natural figure in a time where women hid theirs or wore ridiculous pillows to add to their silhouette. Elsa was different and she embraced it with grace.
So of course she wasn't just about to stop exploring what the modern world have to offer in terms of fashion just for 'tradition'. The world was meant to change and evolve. Although in some aspects, they devolved.
Elsa turned her nose up at crop top and shorts. She understood that some women enjoyed flaunting their figures. But Elsa wanted to be beautiful and not be just another object of sexual fantasy. Sure, she was aware that men will fantasize about her regardless of how she dressed herself. But she would not blatantly turn herself into an object of sex. Elsa wanted to show even to those that never speak to her that she was more than just her sex. She was a woman of intelligence and grace. She have class and she will show it with the way she dress. She respect herself and she will demand that others do the same without having to scream for it at their faces.
Which was why, even though there were more 'advanced' fashions, she still wore conservative fashion with a bit of dare. She was of the belief that her physique, what lies under her dress, it was for her husband to peruse and admire. Besides, nothing was more attractive than a bit of mystery.
She wasn't ignorant that Danny looked at her in the same manner that a man look at a woman. She caught him a few times through reflections; the way his eyes roamed over her figure, stopping awhile on her backside before unconsciously licking his lips. It flustered her the first time she realized what was going on and understanding what that light in his eyes meant when he looked at her during their first date. After that, she felt empowered by his gaze, knowing that he was admiring her in a way that she deserved to be admired by her husband.
She have never felt that way before. She have never felt wanted as a woman before. At the very least, this marriage would not be cold like how some of the court women of her time as Queen often whispered to each other with loneliness and pain in their eyes. Although she was prepared for a cold marriage of her own, the fact that Danny reacted the way he did with her told her otherwise.
Because of this, Elsa felt that she should at least show him that she appreciate his appreciation of her.
She had just finished her business with the witch, Marlene, when she heard Harry squealing, "Mum! Mum! I want this one!"
She looked around to see Harry dragging along a long fabric of magical patterns of ghosts and white owls zooming around over a navy background of the night sky with sickle moons. He showed her the fabric and firmly asked her, "Can I make this into my bed, please?"
Elsa looked up behind him to see Danny rolling the fabric around its bolt. She giggled as he rolled his eyes at her before saying, "I want one of my own too," Before she could say anything, he pulled out one with serenely falling snowflakes like little flowers over a sparkling pastel background, "We could make one for you too,"
After a moment being tempted by the very beautiful fabric, she relented before looking at Marlene, "Do you make quilts for bed too?"
Marlene giggled, "Yes, we do!"
Elsa hummed before looking at Danny, "And you need something for your end too, Danny. You are the groom, after all," She smiled at the betrayed look he sent her way. If she let him, he will wear the same thing he wore today to his wedding. He pouted for a moment before slumping and agreeing to look through the book of fashion as if he was going to face a trial.
Elsa giggled as she picked up Harry, "Come along, Harry. Let Dad decide what he will wear to the wedding,"
Harry grinned, "Okay! I'll choose the prettiest one for you to wear, Mum!"
He started pulling her around the store, leaving poor Danny stranded with the eager witch who clearly admired his physique. Nothing got a fashion designer's blood pumping more than an attractive muse. And Elsa will admit that Danny was a very attractive specimen of a man and ghost. She wasn't blind to beauty, after all. She giggled as Danny slumped in the chair she just vacated while Harry dragged her around, picking on this fabric and that, before asking "will Grandpa Gandalf like it" and moving on.
Elsa found a beautiful dress robe in teal and dark green that would look wonderful on Jazz. She memorized the dress robe when Harry said, "Nanna will look really pretty in this one, right Mum?"
Elsa smiled, "We are of the same mind, Harry,"
Harry grinned at her, proud that they shared a thought. He held her hand in his and pulled her around. At one point, they came across a familiar mother and son. The boy stared at Harry who chattered about this color and Grandpa Gandalf and this pattern before asking if Elsa would wear this "pretty dress" and if Danny would look good in blue wizard robe with sparkling golden stars. The small blond child came forward to call on Harry but his mother pulled him back, "No Draco. We don't speak to people of little importance,"
Draco stared at her and Harry for a second longer before sniffing and turning his nose up, "Yes, Mother,"
After they left their sight, Harry looked at Elsa, "Are we not important, Mum?"
Elsa smiled, "We are important to each other and that is all that matter, Harry,"
Harry frowned, thinking. He tapped his mitt covered hand to his temple, "I think, think, think..." Elsa stifled a giggle at the sight before the boy looked at her and smiled, "Okay! You're special to me so you're important. They are not special to me so they are not important either! Got it!"
Danny joined them, "Got what?" He looked at her and kissed her temple, "I'm finished. Let's go,"
Harry hopped, hands up and making grabbing motion, "Up! Up, up!"
Danny picked the boy up and looked out the window, "Alright. Let's grab some food. I think I saw some nice family friendly restaurant out there..." He then asked once they were outside, "So? What did you get, Harry?"
Harry told him about his little enlightenment, "You and Mum are special to me so you are important!"
Danny snorted, "Yeah! Sure! But I am always important!"
Elsa grabbed his arm, holding onto him and hugging him close to herself as they made their way through the crowd. She prayed that such peaceful days will continue for a while longer.
