05| Smoke Rising

"The Grounders cauterized the wound. Saved his life." Clarke informed, frowning at Jasper, who'd been crying out in pain all night. I was really struggling to keep being sane after repeatedly hearing his screams.

"Saved his life so they could string him up for live bait." Finn reminded. "Garden of Eden this ain't."

"This is infected." Clarke said. "He could be septic. Any progress on using the wristbands to contact the Ark?" She looked over at Monty and I. We were sat around a lamp, surrounded by wristbands. We hadn't had much luck. "Monty?"

"That would be a firm no."

Clarke sighed. "My mother would know what to do."

Wells stepped into the room. "How's he doing?"

"How does it look like he's doing, Wells?" I snapped, turning back around again with an exasperated sigh.

"Hey, I'm just trying to help."

Jasper let out another moan and I winced. "Right. You want to help?" Clarke said through gritted teeth. "Hold him down."

Wells and Finn each grabbed one of Jasper's legs whilst Clarke cauterised her knife.

Monty's eyes widened. "I'm not gonna like this, am I?"

I shook my head, feeling anxiety creep into my thoughts. "Nope."

This isn't going to end well. This isn't going to end well. This isn't going to end well.

Clarke cut the knife into Jasper's skin and he let out a loud scream.

"Hold him still!" She commanded. "I need to cut away the infected flesh."

I exchanged a worried glance with Monty just as Octavia frantically came running in.

"Stop it! You're killing him!"

"She's trying to save his life." Finn corrected.

"She can't." All of us looked over to see Bellamy climbing up the ladder.

Wells stood up immediately. "Back off."

"We didn't drag him through miles of woods just to let him die." Clarke said.

"Kid's a goner." Bellamy stated. "If you can't see that, you're deluded. He's making people crazy."

Bellamy was making some sense. Kind of. I wanted nothing more than for Jasper to get better but it has been three days and there has been no improvement. He's suffering and I want it to stop. He's scaring people. He's scaring me. And it pains me to have to watch somebody I really do care about go through this.

"Sorry if Jasper's an inconvenience to you." Clarke scoffed. "This isn't the Ark. Down here, every life matters." She said firmly.

"Take a look at him. He's a lost cause."

Clarke ignored him. "Octavia, I've spent my whole life watching my mother heal people. If I say there's hope, there's hope."

"This isn't about hope, it's about guts. You don't have the guts to make the hard choices. I do. He's been like this for three days. If he's not better by tomorrow, I'll kill him myself." He turned to leave but then noticed Octavia wasn't following him. "Octavia, let's go."

"I'm staying here."

Bellamy hesitated but nodded and left.

"Power-hungry, self-serving jackass. He doesn't care about anyone but himself." Monty rambled. Then he looked up at Octavia. "No offense."

I sighed, feeling caught between contrasting opinions. Everyone in the room seemed to be against what he was saying. But although I didn't agree with everything, Bellamy was right.

"Yeah. Bellamy is all that." Finn said. "But he also happens to be right."

I looked over, relieved that someone was thinking the same thing I was.

I bit my lip, unsure on whether or not to speak up. But I had to.

"I agree."

Clarke looked taken aback. "What?"

I could understand her confusion. Usually, I've always got Clarke's back. But things were different now. I had made my own choice. I couldn't do this anymore; I just couldn't keep listening to Jasper's screams.

"I'm sorry, Clarke." I shook my head with a sigh. "I think I need some air."

Nobody said a word as I climbed down the ladder and left.

I stepped outside and leant against the dropship. I felt sick. This whole entire situation made me feel sick.

"Hey, princess."

I whipped around, glaring at Bellamy. "Don't call me that, asshole."

He smirked. "You any good with a knife?" He asked, pulling one out of his pocket and holding it up.

"Um-" No. "Well, i'm a fast learner. " I heard Murphy scoff and I wanted nothing more than to prove to him that I was capable. That I wasn't just someone who followed Clarke around, obeying all of her orders. However, most of all, I actually wanted to get out of camp and that offer seemed to be on the table. "Trust me."

Bellamy nodded, tossing me the knife. Thankfully, I didn't drop it or scratch myself. That would have been embarrassing.

"Right then, let's go." Murphy grumbled. Before he could move, Bellamy had his hand on his chest. "Stay here. Keep the camp protected."

Muprhy looked like he wanted to argue but kept his mouth shut. "Fine."

Bellamy nodded at me and beckoned the rest of his group over. "Okay, let's go."

I probably shouldn't have agreed to this.

Not long after we'd headed into the forest, we spotted a black bore squealing.

Atom had been the one mainly showing me how to use the knife. Just the basics, really. Hand positions, using the right amount of power. Bellamy tried to teach me a few tricks too but they were a bit too advanced for me. Not that I'd tell him that though.

Bellamy suddenly started to slow down. "Shh-shh." He whispered, holding his hand out in front of us. "She's mine." He slowly crept towards the bore, axe in hand. Just as he raised his arm, a twig snapped, causing him to change direction and hurl the knife towards the sound. It slammed into a tree, just about missing a wide eyed young girl.

I gasped, holding my hand over my mouth. The boar bolted away and the other boys chased after it. I headed over to the terrified looking girl, making sure she was okay.

"Hey." I crouched down gently in front of her. "Why are you out here, sweetie?"

Before she could answer, Bellamy came storming over.

"Who the hell are you?" He stepped harshly towards her, and I placed a hand on his chest, stopping him from coming any closer and frightening the poor girl even more. "Bellamy." I cautioned.

Her shoulders were stiff, her whole body was rigid. "Charlotte."

"I almost killed you." Bellamy said, reaching to pull out the axe from the tree. "Why aren't you back at camp?"

"Well, what with that guy who was dying, I just- I couldn't listen anymore." She replied.

"There's Grounders out here." I turned my head, noticing Atom had started to come over. "It's too dangerous for a little girl." He said.

"I'm not little." She defended, causing me to smile.

Bellamy looked impressed too. "Okay, then, but you can't hunt-" he pulled out yet another spare knife. "Without a weapon." She took it from his hand, her face emotionless. "Ever killed something before?" He asked.

She shook her head in response.

"Who knows? Maybe you're good at it."

I bit my lip, trying to stop the smile spreading across my face. Bellamy Blake clearly had a soft spot when it came to kids.

"Come on, Charlotte." I said softly, still a little worried about her coming along. After the adventures I'd been on, I learned that things on Earth didn't exactly go smoothly.

~

My feet were thudding on the ground, my heart was beating erratically. An ominous fog was catching up with us, making my eyes sting and making it really difficult to see where I was going.

Like I said, things on earth did not go smoothly.

"Come on! There are caves this way!" I heard Bellamy yell from up ahead.

"Come on." I took Charlotte's hand briefly, letting her pass me and run to Bellamy.

I heard someone trip behind me and start coughing horrendously. I turned around, realising it was Atom.

My foot caught on something and my heart leaped as I started to fall to the ground.

"Bellamy!" I heard Atom yelling.

I scrambled back up immediately as the fog started to swallow me. I coughed, feeling slightly light headed. It was affecting my vision too.

I didn't want to die like this.

"Bellamy!" I yelled, choking on his name. "Bellamy!"

"Billie!"

I followed the sound of his voice until someone's hands, I presumed Bellamy's, wrapped around my waist.

The two of us stumbled across the ground and inside a cave. I still couldn't see anything at all and relied on Bellamy to guide me.

"Bellamy?" I heard Charlotte ask.

"Charlotte." I breathed out. I'd completely forgotten. My knees buckled and I dropped to the floor, still coughing. Bellamy stood against the wall, breathless.

"You okay?"

I couldn't speak so I just nodded my head.

We sat for a while in silence. I'd finally managed to stop coughing and Charlotte fell asleep, leaving just me and Bellamy.

I rested my head against the wall, watching Bellamy. He lifted his eyes up, meeting my gaze.

"Why did you come back for me?" I asked quietly.

He dropped his gaze, looking down at his hands. "I wasn't just gonna leave you."

A silence passed between us whilst I watched him. "Thank you."

Bellamy pursed his lips, nodding. "It's okay." He looked down at his hands and then back up at me. I noticed how dark his eyes looked in this light. "You know, this is the third time I've saved you."

"Do you want a medal?"

He chuckled, quietly and softly. "Most girls would be pleased to have been rescued by me."

I rolled my eyes at his arrogance. "I'm not most girls."

"No." His lips tugged into a small smile. But it disappeared as quickly as it came. "You're not."

We fell silent again and I felt my eyelids fluttering shut.

"You're tired." Bellamy said.

"Your observation is correct."

"Get some rest."

I didn't need to be told twice.

I shrugged off my jacket, placing it under my head as a pillow.

"Goodnight, Bellamy." I mumbled quietly.

I was surprised he actually heard me. But he did.

"Goodnight, Billie."
