PJ had been woken by Dan just as he was beginning to dream, and he was understandably annoyed. He didn't get why Dan couldn't have waited until morning to show him this 'oh-so-important' thing that was just across the park, and he hadn't even been told what it was, so now he was completely in the dark as to why Dan and Phil had sent him over to the woods with the mysterious comment of 'we wanted you to be the first to see'.
He was so focused on being annoyed at Dan and Phil that he hadn't yet seen the tall figure standing by a tree and staring at him. When he did notice them, he found them a little creepy. However, Phil had told him to go towards the person, so he assumed that the strange starer was the thing he was looking for.
PJ examined them a little closer as he walked nearer. The person – a man – looked vaguely familiar. His hair was brown, cut short and pushed back messily. He was around the same height as PJ, maybe a little shorter, but he was more well-built. Clearly he hadn't spent the past few years starving to death while his island's leader took all the supplies for himself.
A smile broke out on the man's face as PJ approached him, and something clicked in the back of PJ's mind. It had been a long time since he'd seen a smile like that, but clearly that was the one thing about the man that hadn't changed.
"Chris?" PJ stopped dead in the middle of the path as the man approached him, smiling so widely it looked as though his face would crack. "Oh my God, Chris."
PJ wasn't sure how to greet the man he'd been in love with for almost ten years. A handshake? A hug? Should he curtsey?
In the end, he opted to hold his hand out for a handshake – he was covered in a dusty sort of mud, and he figured Chris wouldn't be too pleased to get covered in that – but Chris knocked his hand away and enveloped him in a hug. Although PJ was the taller of the pair, he felt strangely safe, because my God he was being hugged by Chris Kendall, the man he hadn't seen for years, and he felt so warm and so safe and he really really wanted to lean back and kiss him but that probably wasn't a good idea-
"I can't believe you, PJ," Chris said, trying and failing to glare at him. It was hard, because his arms were still tight around PJ and he was struggling to find any emotion other than pure delight. "It took you four years to leave? Four whole years? Do you have any idea how difficult that was for me?"
"Difficult for you? I was stuck on a fucking prison island, Chris."
"Fair enough," Chris said, "but I was here all alone. God, it was so hard to leave you. That in itself almost measures up to the pain you've felt over the past few years."
"Why was it so hard?" PJ asked, trying desperately to reign in his imagination because it was going haywire with all the things Chris could say.
"Because," Chris answered with a smile, "I had to leave the person I loved most in the world to come to a country where I had nothing. Do you have any idea how hard it is to give hot guys a fake number because you can't get a certain someone out of your head?"
"If anyone had asked for my number back on Prae, I'm sure I'd feel your pain," PJ said, his heart fluttering wildly. This was far more than he had been expecting, considering this was the first time he'd seen Chris in four years. "Who was the certain someone?"
"Phil, obviously," said Chris, grinning. Seeing the look on PJ's face – a mixture of 'ha-ha-very-funny' and 'oh-God-please-no' – he continued, "You twat, you know I have a thing for green eyes, and you're the only person I've met who has them."
Dan and Phil headed over to Chris and PJ when they'd stopped kissing and were just standing, arms around one another, talking quietly. Phil couldn't wipe the smile off his face as they approached. "Good to see you, Chris," he said with a grin.
Chris turned around, taking one hand off PJ's shoulder. "Phil! You look so different," he said, flinging his free arm around Phil and squeezing him. "I missed you."
"I missed you too," Phil said, the smile still growing.
Chris turned to Dan, who was standing shyly behind Phil. He and Chris had been casual acquaintances, but didn't know one another as well as PJ and Chris had, or Chris and Phil. "Dan!" Chris hugged him, too, and Dan was surprised but pleased.
"Now that the introductions are done," said PJ, taking hold of Chris' hand, "can we leave here? I'm exhausted."
"Oh, of course," said Chris, turning to the gate nearby. "I've been looking for you for hours, I've walked all over London, so it's quite a long walk back. Taxi?"
The three of them nodded gratefully. "I don't think I can actually manage another walk," Phil said with a sigh, squeezing Dan's hand gently. "We don't have any money, though."
"You think I'd go anywhere without money?" said Chris with a smile, tapping his back pocket. "Londoners do things differently, you know. You need money for basically everything here."
They made their way over to the road nearby, walking in pairs that were holding hands tightly. Chris rang for a taxi and within a few minutes one had pulled up beside them. Chris ushered them all in and they sat down, clipping their seatbelts and sitting back.
When the doors closed, Dan gripped Phil's hand so hard it almost hurt, and Phil turned to him. "What's wrong?"
"This is like the cars they use to take you to the prison," Dan stuttered, his breathing becoming uneven.
"Hey, it's okay," Phil whispered, running his hands through Dan's hair. "We're going to Chris' house, we'll be safe there, okay?"
Dan shuffled closer to him and Phil could feel the shivers running through his small frame. He leaned down and kissed the top of Dan's head gently, trying to comfort him. Dan looked up and touched Phil's face softly. "Can I kiss you to distract myself?"
Phil smiled, twisting his body to block Chris and PJ's view, and leant down to kiss Dan's lips. "It's alright," he murmured softly. "You're going to be safe." Neither of them were sure whether he was trying to convince Dan or himself.
After a few moments, Phil pulled away, turning back towards the front of the car, keeping his arm around Dan. Sensing something, he turned to Chris and PJ, who were leaning towards one another and holding hands tightly, but looking at him questioningly. "Are you two-" said PJ after a moment.
Phil nodded and a smile broke out on PJ and Chris' faces. "We can go on double dates!" Chris squealed. "And it won't matter that I only have one bedroom!"
They all laughed, but then Dan leaned over and whispered to Phil, "What's a double date?"
Phil shrugged. "Chris? What's a double date?"
Chris rolled his eyes, laughing. "It's where two couples go on a date together, I guess."
"Oh." Dan leaned back, satisfied, but then looked suddenly worried. "You only have one bedroom?"
