Waking

The orange liquid laid on the floor, shards of glass smashed about too. Lucas just stared at the mess. Could they still wake Aurelia up? Would he be able to make a second one?

"Oh my. I'm so sorry, your highness. This has been quite a predicament, hasn't it? Perhaps someone should alert the king and queen that our guest has fallen ill and probably will never wake. I'm dreadfully sorry." Eurwyn signed, feigning disappointment before finding his way out of the room.

Lucas continued to glare as he questioned what to do. Eurwyn was going to try his hardest to make sure nothing could keep Aurelia from continuing to sleep.

"Aurelia," Lucas whispered to the sleeping peasant. "I'm going to do everything in my power to get you to wake up. I'll try every trick in the book if I have to." He squeezed her hand in foolish hope that she would squeeze back, showing signs of waking.

Serenity however sprung into action. She took out a handkerchief and began mopping up the liquid.

"Serenity, this is no time for cleaning." Lucas sighed.

She glared at him. "Do you really think that's what I'm doing?"

"It certainly looks like that." Lucas stated.

Serenity rolled her eyes. She dashed over to where Lucas and Aurelia were.

"Open her mouth, please." Serenity commanded.

Lucas did as he was told and Serenity twisted her handkerchief so wet, orange droplets fell from it. Some drops rolled off Aurelia's strawberry lips and onto her tongue while others landed in her mouth right away.

When there was no immediate change Serenity and Lucas both feared that Serenity hadn't been able to mop up enough or the cure had been made wrong. Aurelia had to wake up. They would make sure of it.

Lucas even considered Serenity's earlier suggestion of fairytale nonsense. Anything was worth a shot. She had to wake up. He hadn't started this journey with her to do it alone.

Before he even had time to think about making any rash decisions such as trying to wake her up by drenching her with water or trying some sort of magic mumbo jumbo he noticed Aurelia's chest rise as a deep breath was took. Two pairs of eyelashes fluttered and two pairs of emeralds stared at him.

At first her face was peaceful like when she had been sleeping then it twisted into that of startled look. Her breathing was heavy as if she was terrified.

"Lia, you're awake." Lucas stated. Both him and Serenity threw their arms around her. When they let go of her she said something that startled them both.

"Are-are you real?" Aurelia quivered.

Lucas held Aurelia by the shoulders. "Yes of course I'm real. Why wouldn't I be?"

"I just- There were so many faces. I couldn't- they weren't-" She wasn't making any sense. It sounded as if she had had a bad dream or something.

"Aurelia, you're okay now. Calm down." Serenity said. Aurelia nodded, confused. After a few deep breaths Aurelia seemed to calm down enough to remember what had happened.

"Eurwyn did it. He put something in my tea. It was his draft." Her breathing still sounded more like panting.

"We know." Serenity and Lucas replied in unison.

"Well, what shall we do?" Aurelia wondered, worriedly. She was no longer sleeping. They had no evidence to prove she ever had been. The closest they had was their word. That was not enough to incriminate him. Eurwyn could not be punished.

"I'm sure I can convince my parents of the truth." Serenity stood up straighter. "Perhaps when they see this mess they'll understand." She sighed.

Aurelia frowned. If she had not been foolish enough not to act on suspect this situation wouldn't have happened. She felt responsible. She must have caused the two royals a bit of unnecessary grief, the way they were acting when she awoke.

"I shall find my parents. Eurwyn needs to be held responsible for his actions." Serenity smiled at Aurelia. Lucas stood up too. Aurelia, fearing they both would leave her, gently grabbed Luke's wrist.

"Please, don't- don't leave me alone." She looked away. She was pathetic for having to say it. She had to be stronger than this.

Lucas tried to give Aurelia a reassuring smile. "Serenity, I'll stay. You find someone to help us with this situation. Don't worry, Aurey. I'm not going anywhere."

Serenity nodded and exited the room, leaving the prince and the peasant alone. She only hoped Aurelia was alright.
