The Note
"Well this day is just full of all sorts of surprises." Mr. Miller let out a breath.
Aurelia smiled, sheepishly.
"Well at least we got our Aurelia back. Even if we won't get to have her around much longer." Mrs. Miller mumbled.
"Does that mean you're going to be royalty, Relia?" Ariana asked.
Aurelia froze. She hadn't thought about that. Well actually she'd been avoiding thinking about it since Lucas proposed.
"Er..." She stammered. She teased up and bit her lip like she always did when she was nervous.
She was marrying the future king. Which made her the future queen. Sure, politics were an interest of hers, but she'd never really trained to rule! She was just the miller's daughter. She wasn't queen material!
Lucas seemed to sense her unease at the question. He knew exactly what she was thinking about. Aurelia would make a fantastic queen despite her doubts. Since he met her he'd often thought about she was better suited for ruling than he was.
"Aurelia," He placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "You'll do fantastically. You're a natural problem solver." When her look of doubt never wavered Lucas continued. "Who saved Princess Evangeline?"
"Yeah, but-"
"And who saved me?"
"That wasn't-"
"And who came up with how to defeat pirates?"
"And I would have died w-"
"Who was stubborn enough that she refused to leave me?"
"That doesn't-"
"Who befriended two princess, one prince, and impressed a king within hours of meetings them?"
"Lucas!"
"Who survived two curses?"
"I couldn't have done any of that without you!" Aurelia huffed.
Lucas simply smiled. "I'm not going anywhere."
Mr. and Mrs. Miller watched the two with amusement. It was clear they had spent a long time together. Mrs. Miller smiled. Her daughter had found someone truly right for her. The fact that Aurelia would be queen was certainly a shock, but they were sure that the wise and inventive daughter they had somehow raised was perfect for the position.
"Why don't you two sit down? We've got a lot of catching up to do with Aurelia and we certainly must get to know Prince Lucas better."
Aurelia blushed as she remembered there were other people in the room. Lucas flashed his soon to be mother-in-law a grateful smile.
"Thank you, Mrs. Miller, but just Lucas is fine." Lucas told her as he took a seat at the table. The rest who weren't already sitting sat too.
"Only as long as you call me Jadia. Mrs. Miller is too formal for someone who is going to be family."
Lucas' face glowed a bright red at her words, but they made him feel glad nonetheless.
They sat around talking for hours, getting to know each other and teasing the two, as well as congratulating them on their engagement. Soon enough it was time for Lucas and Aurelia to leave.
"I'm sorry we can't stay longer but it's getting dark." Aurelia hugged her father goodbye.
"We understand, sunshine. Stay safe." Mr. Miller told his daughter. "And remember, no funny business until the wedding night."
"Dad!" Aurelia hissed.
"Coal!" Mrs. Miller scolded.
"What? We don't want a royal scandal on our hands."
Lucas was a shocking red at the man's words, which was to be expected. The poor boy was flustered beyond belief.
"Before you leave, do you want your book?" Ariana asked her older sister, holding out a very worn and well loved copy of The Adventures of Robin Hood. The cover was nearly falling off and part of the painted lettering had faded. Despite its tatter Aurelia took it anyway.
"Thank you, Ariana." Aurelia gave her little sister a hug before Lucas and Aurelia were both out the door.
"I'm guessing that book means more to you than just the fantastic adventure." Lucas stated, once they were alone outside.
Aurelia smiled and clutched the book tight. "Well yes. A boy- a friend gave it to me."
"A boy? Should I be worried about competition?" Lucas joked. He'd become a lot more confident since Aurelia had accepted his marriage proposal.
"Of course not. I haven't seen him since I was a kid. I hardly even remember his name." Aurelia sighed.
"You don't even remember his name?"
"Well no... He was a couple years older than me and it was over a decade ago. I just remember that he was called Hunter sometimes, but it wasn't his real name."
Lucas nearly stopped in his tracks. "Hunter?"
"Yes, Hunter." Aurelia raised an eyebrow. Why did that matter?
"Perhaps it was a last name." Lucas suggested, grinning.
"Perhaps..." Aurelia shot him a curious look.
"May I?" Lucas asked for her book. Aurelia nodded and handed over.
He opened up the cover, delicately. Sure enough his suspicions were confirmed.
Dear Lia,
I'm sorry I have to go away. I'm going to miss hanging out with you. I know that you like reading, so my mom suggested I give you a copy of one of my favorites. I think you'll enjoy Robin Hood. I wish that we could still see each other, but Mom says it's unlikely. I hope to see you again someday and I'm glad you're my friend. Goodbye, Lia.
-L. Hunter
Lucas smiled. The handwriting was faded and messy but he could make it out.
"I found you." Lucas beamed.
Aurelia did not hide her confusion well. "What do you mean?"
"I mean," Lucas turned to look her at her directly. "My parents used to own a bookstore."
Aurelia opened her mouth to speak, but Lucas continued before she could say anything.
"And my last name is Hunter."
"No..." Aurelia mumbled.
"Yes!"
Aurelia jumped on him, pulling him into a hug. "You know I love you right?"
"I know." Lucas smiled and planted a kiss on her forehead.
They had been friends as kids. That was the best surprise she'd had in a long time.
