The Name of Arilace
Their next task would be an easy thing to any person who didn't get stressed out or anxious by talking to people. Lucas wasn't that sort of person. So going up to strangers and asking them about the name of the town wasn't something he wanted to do, but it wasn't like he wanted Aurelia to stay cursed either.
"Excuse me!" Lucas interrupted a passerby's day. He felt himself tense up. "Can you tell me why the town is called Arilace?"
The passerby shrugged and continued walking. Okay, he guessed they didn't know. He had to ask someone else.
He approached a young woman. "Er, excuse me, miss."
"Yes?"
"I was wondering what you could tell me about the town name? I mean Arilace is a bit of a strange name- no offense meant to the town of Arilace. It's a nice name- er... I was just wondering where it came from." Lucas asked, awkwardly.
"I'm not quite sure." The young woman replied. "I think it has to do with two heroes or something. Sorry." She told him, continuing on with her day.
Lucas sighed. Just how many people would he have to talk to to get information on the town name? Hopefully not the entire town.
"Excuse me," A voice stated from behind him. Both him and Aurelia quickly turned around to see a young man with square glasses over his pale blue eyes and curly brown hair. He couldn't have been older than nineteen. "Is everything okay?"
"Uh yes. We're fine, but I have a question about the town." Lucas told him.
"Shoot! My father is the town historian. If there's something you need to know about Arilace, you can ask me practically anything. The name's Char Bellion, by the way." Char held out his hand.
"Er... I'm Lucas and this is my friend Aurelia." Lucas awkwardly shook Char's hand. Aurelia gave a little wave. "Um what can you tell me about the town name?"
"Ah yes, the town name. Most people around here hardly know the true story about it. Come on," Char waved his hand, gesturing for them to follow. The two hesitated. "We're just going into the library. I thought it'd be more comfortable than out here on the street."
At this they followed. The library was quite warm, without being stuffy. It smelled like how an old book might. It was quite cozy to Aurelia and Lucas and they instantly enjoyed the atmosphere there.
Char found a set of armchairs near the back of the library. They took their seats, ready to begin the tale behind the name of Arilace.
"There were once two siblings." Char began, with Aurelia leaning in in interest. Lucas leaned back, his arms crossed, also listening intently. "Legend has it that their parents died in a mysterious fire when they were quite young. They ran to the woods to live and were found by a group mermaids who lived in the wood's lake."
"I thought mermaids only liked in the sea." Lucas interjected. "Hence the name mermaids or sea maids."
Char shrugged, smiling. "Maybe there are lake maids?" He suggested.
Aurelia seemed to laugh silently at that. Lucas shrugged. He let Char continue.
"The mermaids tried to drown the boy, but his sister managed to save him by distracting the mermaids and pulling her brother from the water. The two continued on to find a better place than by the lake. The siblings found a dragon's den on accident, expecting the dragon to eat them. The dragon took them under her wing and raised the two siblings."
"A dragon raised them?" Lucas asked in disbelief. He could get behind magical maps, elves, and curses, but dragons and mermaids seemed to be a bit too far fetched.
Aurelia rolled her eyes. When was he going to stop disbelieving?
"It's just a legend, Lucas." Char told him.
"Alright..." Lucas allowed him to continue.
"When they grew up they decided to go out and make themselves a place in the world. They decided to create a little town on the other side of the forest. The only problem was the wicked Furati who lived there. The two siblings made a deal with the rude elf. They could have the land, but it would be host to all sorts of magic and creatures and if the Furati were ever disrespected the city would crumble. The two agreed, getting one of the better elf deals. Many deals are much worse." Char explained.
"Okay, but what about the town name?" Lucas asked.
"The siblings asked the citizens, who flooded the city instantly with the elf's deal, what it should be called. They decided to name it after the heroes who had founded it. That's the short version anyway. So the town was named Arilace after the twin heroes: Arion and Lacey Wood." Char told them.
Aurelia looked excited at that. She had no clue that the book was an actual historically accurate read. She assumed it was purely fiction.
"That's... Actually really interesting. Thank you." Lucas told him.
"You're welcome. Anything else I can help you with?" Char asked.
Aurelia looked to Luke. "Well actually..." The prince began. "There is one thing."
