Letholdus and Atharia
It was a week since Aurelia had attempted to get a job and a week since Coal Miller had lied to the town about his daughter's talent.
Aurelia stared out the second floor window of her house, looking out on the street. She had finished her chores for the day and was experiencing a rare moment of boredom. She sighed. Would life always have to be like this for her? Chores, chores, and more chores, stuck in poverty, unable to escape until she died an old maid or unwillingly married off to someone she had never loved only to have her own family stuck in poverty too? That was her worst fear.
It was that stupid King, she knew. He was the reason for the economical crisis. She had researched it, as she was very interested in economics, and the King Letholdus had cut trade ties with three different kingdoms in nine years over such silly matters. Now Atharia had extra amounts of barley, straw, wheat, corn, and other products but were extremely lacking in other materials such as iron, silk, cotton, thread and more. Prices for those items were through the roof and already expensive items like silk, iron, and gold were completely unaffordable for the poor citizens of Atharia. The poor blacksmith shop had nearly had to close and they were struggling quite a bit. Everyone had to raise their prices, just to get by.
It didn't help that the king loved living in luxury and raised taxes. Funding schools didn't matter too much as none of the children's families could afford letting their children get an education and the cobblestone streets didn't need repair. Aurelia herself had gone to school until she was fifteen when her parents could no longer allow it. There were many other reasons for taxes but overall taxes didn't need to be as high as they were. Honestly the taxes weren't helping anyone except those who already had power and wealth.
It was not a nice time to be a citizen in Atharia.
Aurelia knew how to fix the situation, or at least make things a bit better. It was obvious. King Letholdus needed to set his pride aside and regain those forgotten alliances with the other kingdoms and lower taxes at least slightly. He could still live a cushy life while not draining the poor of their little bit of money. It might not fix things immediately but would certainly improve things.
Aurelia sighed again and stared at her favorite book, which lied next to her. It was one of the few her family could afford to own. The Adventures of Robin Hood. He took from the rich and gave to the poor. Where was Robin Hood when you really needed him?
Aurelia noticed from out the window a nice, cushy carriage rolling down the street. It wasn't a common sight in the for there to be such a nice carriage on their street. Aurelia rushed downstairs, to see her mother open the door to two royal knights.
"Is a Miss Aurelia Miller here?" One asked.
Aurelia was shocked. Why in the world would the Knights be there for her? She had never done anything wrong. She wasn't a notable person either. Sure she tried to help others, but she hadn't done anything that would herald the attention of the royal knights.
"Yes, that would be me." Aurelia said bravely, standing up straight.
"What do you want with my daughter?" Jadia Miller questioned, worried.
"We have orders from King Letholdus to bring her in." The other knight said.
"The King?" Aurelia said in a daze. What in the world would the king want with her?
