Cure

Serenity knew her way around the castle. "Okay so Eurwyn probably won't be in his lab for the rest of the night. Lately he's been calling it an early night. Usually he'd be up until the sunrise working." Serenity explained to Lucas.

"That's probably because the draft makes him tired." Lucas suggested. "He was getting closer and closer to perfecting it and now he has, at least in liquid form. He's trying to turn it into a gas, isn't he?"

Serenity hesitated before nodding. "I... Believe he is. You know I don't really pay attention to this kind of stuff." Serenity shrugged sheepishly.

"I know... I don't understand how you can't be fascinated by this! It so... Intriguing!" Lucas fished around with his words for a while.

"Not all of us think so." Serenity huffed. "I've got other things on my mind."

Lucas bit back a remark about the superficial things that were probably on her mind, remembering that she was his friend and she didn't have to like the same things as him.

"Here we are, I think." Serenity hesitated. "Let's get that cure!"

"We'll probably have to make it, you realize." Lucas pushed the door to Eurwyn's laboratory open.

"Yes I realize that." Serenity snapped.

The laboratory was cramped with shelves of full of odd bottles and books and other what-nots. Tools that most people had no knowledge of sat upon a work desk. Bottles with odd colored liquids bubbled, suspiciously. Lucas noted that most of the bottles had a variant of emerald inside.

Lucas rushed over to the desk where the beakers sat. A heavy, leather bound book can his eye. Lucas flipped through it.

July 10th

After I finishing the liquid state a few days prior I have now tested it on an actual human being. It was a success.

That was the day the book opened up to. That was today.

Lucas flipped back a few pages, hoping to find a list of the successful ingredients and their amounts.

July 4th

Princess Serenity has just returned from Atharia. She will not stop blathering on about her trip. She is attempting to trick me into believing that there's a girl who can spin straw into gold. Preposterous, isn't it? Besides that it's a total waste of my time. This lying peasant from Atharia is of no importance to me. Why would I ever need to care about a girl who can "spin straw into gold"? It's ludicrous and will not impact my life in the slightest.

Meanwhile I have found the right ingredients to the sleeping draft.

1 teaspoon shredded briarwood
2 tablespoons of ground bitterroot
1 cup of prune juice
2 teaspoons of crushed pistachios
9 strands of bark from the somnun tree
8 drops of Lukil venom
5 pinches of fae dust
1 pinch of cinnamon

Do not forget.

"Serenity, look at this!" Lucas exclaimed, pushing the book in her face. "We've got the entire list of ingredients. Now we need to create a cure. Hopefully we can use these to make a cure."

"Are you sure you know what you're doing?" Serenity wondered, worriedly.

"I never claimed I did."

"You mean you don't know what you're doing?" Serenity exclaimed.

"I didn't say that either." A small mischievous grin formed on Luke's face.

Serenity placed her hands on her hips and huffed. "Lucas, do you know what you are doing?"

A mischievous light twinkled in his eye. "Mostly."

"You are infuriating. You realize that if we don't do this right-"

"-we could poison Aurelia? Yes I know that. I won't let it happen. Aurelia will be fine." Lucas assured both Serenity and himself.

"What can I do to help?" Serenity asked, peering over Luke's work as he began gathering stuff.

"You can keep me company I guess." Lucas shrugged, already beginning of mix certain ingredients.

"Alright... So why aren't you in love with Aurelia?" Serenity wondered.

"For Peter's sake, Sere! Really? This again?" Lucas groaned. "I'm not in love with her because the chemicals in my brain have not dictated that I should be. I don't feel any emotional attachment to her besides friendship and that is how it will remain. It is what it is. Now would you please let it go?" Lucas rambled.

Serenity huffed. "Fine."

"I don't see what your obsession with my relationship is." Lucas grumbled. "It's nothing interesting."

Serenity shook her head. "I can't believe you still think that."

"Think what exactly?" Luke's eyes narrowed as he concentrated on his new task.

"That there's something uninteresting about you! You need a self esteem boost."

Lucas frowned, thinking of Aurelia. He had a nagging suspicion that she didn't realize how much she was worth.

"You know... I used to have a crush on you."

"What?" This new information startled Lucas. He knocked over a bottle of some sort of orange liquid, causing it to spill into the cure he was working on.

"Dang it!"

Serenity giggled. "It didn't take me long to realize you weren't my type."

"Wait, Serenity! This is it!" Lucas exclaimed. "The orange beaker was the compound I was looking for! This is the cure! I'm sure of it." Lucas held up the mixture he made.

"How'd you do it?" Serenity wondered.

Lucas waved her off. "I won't bore you to sleep with the process. What's important is waking up Aurelia!"

What they didn't realize was that some things are easier said than done.
