Chapter 6
SCIENTIFIC BUILDING, ALTOONA
Martin, Timothy and James could only watch the live broadcast from a helicopter that was surveying the destruction of Merced in California from the night before. The three were solemn at the images that were being displayed, and Timothy had even said a small prayer to everyone who had lost their lives.
The images on the TV changed to that of a cell phone video that was of the fight that lasted about a minute or two before going to a white tent that was serving as a field hospital that held those who were far too close to the fighting. Doctors and nurses were going to bedridden people, doing their best to treat patients. There were people who weren't staff that were holding geiger counters and slowly moving them to some of the patients. All of them were making the counters go off like crazy.
"How long do you think they'll have?" Martin asked quietly.
"I'm unsure, some could have months, weeks... maybe even days or hours left at the most. With how much radiation Godzilla was reportedly given off as it simply walked and just being in the area... it's hard to say."
Susan took this time to walk into the room and to the three men with a tray that had three mugs of coffee and a mug of tea. She handed each man mugs of coffee and kept the mug of tea to herself. She finally glanced over to the TV, the images cycling through once more and her expression turned into a horrified one.
"Found anything, Sue?" Martin asked, wanting to distract her from the images. He watched as she shook her head before composing herself.
"Surprisingly, yes." She set her mug down before sticking a hand into her purse and pulled out some papers, handing one over to Martin so that he and the other two could look it over. On the paper was something akin to a wooden statue that's clearly in the shape of the lake creature.
"That's from an extinct tribe that we hardly know anything about. No one knows the name, but their legends have been passed down in other tribes for generations upon generations. From what my colleagues found, the creature is known to be an evil being and the tribe had feared it. They named it Varan, which means Lake Devil in their language."
"Did the legends say anything about it...flying?"
"What?" Susan looked at Martin, confused. "No, do you know how impossible that is? Nothing like that could fly– hell, it wouldn't even be able to glide!"
James pointed to the TV. "Well, it clearly didn't get that memo then."
Susan looked to the TV once more just at the footage of Varan taking off into the sky, and she stared at in disbelief for a long moment before looking at the men once more.
"...You know what? I'm not even going to question it. I give up on these things." She shook her head for a moment, taking a deep breath. "Where is it now?"
"We don't know." Timothy answered. "They only sent a few jets, and they were all downed by Godzilla."
"I get that our arsenal has changed since the second world war, but as we've seen with how many jets they've sent, they have way too much confidence in their weaponry." Martin stated.
"Yes, I fear what they will do once they figure out that almost all weapons are useless against him."
From the TV, the breaking news jingle sounded, making the four look over. An anchorman sat behind the desk on the screen, being calm and collecting with a serious expression on his face.
"We have just received word that Godzilla had just made landfall in Panama City."
The image changed to what appeared to be a live feed from a helicopter above the said city. Godzilla could be seen in broad daylight, already heading out of the city and following the canal. There was a trail of destruction behind him, though it was obvious that he didn't try to go out of his way to destroy other parts of the city that were still standing. The man reporting on the scene was speaking spanish.
"These images are from a live feed from the local news helicopter. The Soto Cano Air Force Base in Honduras are currently scrambling some attack helicopters and should be on scene soon."

COLON, PANAMA
Jake held his camera as steady as he could, pointing it down at Godzilla from the second news helicopter that had an English-speaking crew. He felt fear pulsing in his veins but knew that this is what he had to do. He wouldn't let fear stop him from getting these images out to the public that was still awaiting news on Godzilla's whereabouts.
"As you can see, Godzilla has made it to Colon in an hour and forty-nine minutes; much faster than we were anticipating for such a large creature. There doesn't seem to be any– wait, here they come!" The reporter pointed. Jake moved his camera to the direction and zoomed in on the approaching group of BOeing AH-64 Apaches; ten of them in total. Three of them broke away from the others and flew on ahead before beginning to unload their 30mm rounds onto the beast.
Godzilla ignored it, even when the others joined in with their own chain guns.
"They're giving him all they've got with their chain guns, but it doesn't seem to have any effect on Godzilla. He just keeps walking forward!"
The aircrafts moved and surrounded him as they continued, and Godzilla simply let out a roar as he trudged onward. One of them let a Hellfire Missile loose and it struck Godzilla right in the neck, causing him to let out another roar, his clawed fingers trying to scratch where the muscle had struck.
"Ah– look at that! One of the missiles struck and it seemed to have stopped Godzilla in his tracks! If I didn't know any better, I'd say that it struck a sensitive and weak point in his neck! Perhaps his gills were around in that area."
Jake felt hope fill his chest before it was dashed as Godzilla snarled, upper lip curling before he whipped his body around, towards the one that had shot the missile, all the while continuing to ignore the other helicopter's 30mm rounds. His tail, following his movements, sent homes and other structures away from their foundations. A few more missiles struck his torso, causing him to growl.
"Look at all this destruction! I'm glad they were able to get civilians out of the city when they did. Could you imagine the casualties from that?" the reporter suddenly paused, squinting. "Hey, something's happening–"
Godzilla's dorsal plates began to light up one by one with a pink color, starting as a faint light before the glow began to strengthen until it was almost blinding. He opened his jaws and unleashed a stream of concentrated, pink nuclear energy. He directed his attack by turning his head in a sweeping motion, taking out the Apaches around him and narrowly missing the news helicopter. He closed his mouth, stopping the continuous stream. The glow of his plates died down until it disappeared.
"I-I don't believe it! Just look at this– the helicopters didn't stand a chance! We aren't sure where Godzilla is heading once he gets to the Atlantic Ocean, but we will be with him until we either lose sight or run out of fuel."
Jake forced his camera to stay on the hulking mass, feeling defeated as Godzilla continued on his way.
