Chapter 3

MARTIN'S HOME, ALTOONA, PENNSYLVANIA

The morning rays of the sun streamed through the blinds of the bedroom and onto the bed where Martin continued to lay, snoring away on his front, a hand under his pillow and in a shirt and a pair of sweatpants. He had a long night of compiling his notes from the interview into a word document along with other research.

Though, his sleep was disrupted by a hand on his shoulder, shaking him awake and, as he opened his eyes, he saw James hovering over him.

"Totally not creepy at all, man." Martin grumbled as he tried to hit James' hand away and yawned. His twin snorted at the other's words before Martin noticed something smelling good from the kitchen.

"Come on, lazy bones. Up you get. Time for breakfast and it's your favorite." James told him before heading over to the doorway. Martin sat up, stretching and yawning again before he climbed out of the bed and rubbed his eyes. He shuffled after James and into the living room to get to the kitchen before he froze as his eyes landed on a second surprise that he wasn't expecting.

"Susan?!" he sputtered out his little sister's name as the 24-year-old beamed at him as she stood at the stove. She stepped away before walking over and pulling him into a hug.

"Aren't you supposed to be in New York?"

"Oh, I'm doing just fine big brother, thanks for asking! I miss you too!" Susan stated sarcastically as she pulled out of the embrace.

"Sorry sis." Martin looked sheepish. "I'm still a bit tired. I was up late last night, working on an assignment."

"Why am I not surprised? You're such a workaholic. Well, come on, let's get some food and coffee in you. Then, we can catch up."

"Whatever you say, miss bossy."

"I'll show you miss bossy, jerk."

Martin ignored James as his twin snickered at their antics and went to pour himself a cup of coffee. The steam rose from the mug as he finished pouring before he sat down at the table, a plate of pancakes topped with scrambled eggs in front of him.

"So, how has New York been treating you, Susie?" asked James as he leaned against the counter.

"Yeah, it's been... two years since you and I last talked in person". Martin added before scooping some of the eggs up and shoveling them into his mouth with a fork, chewing.

"I'm so sorry about that, Mart. I've been meaning to call or come visit sooner but..." Susan trailed off and Martin waved her apology off before swallowing the eggs, smiling at Susan to let her know that it was alright.

"Any boyfriends we should know about?" James teased.

"No, I'm still as single as the last time Martin asked." She rolled her eyes. "I would rather focus on my work than a relationship."

"Good news for us then, right Martin?" James chuckled. The said man nodded before sipping at his coffee while James continued.

"Speaking of work, how's all that going? Everyone treating you fine there?"

"Yes, everyone I work with is nice. Who knew working at the National History Museum could be rather fun? Most of the visitors are as well, but there are some of them who are more trouble than others."

"Glad to hear it." Martin smiled before finishing up his eggs and got started on the pancakes.

"What about you Martin?" Susan asked Martin this time. "What's the story you're working on right now?"

Martin swallowed the piece of pancake that he was chewing before putting his fork down. "A scientist by the name of Timothy Nesbit. He did two papers; the first one is the theory that connects the nuclear testing at the Marshall Islands and the creature that attacked Tokyo in fifty-four. The second is the theory of there being a second creature still alive. It was... a rather informative interview."

"I could have sworn the first one was a fact."

"Not to everyone. Hell, there's some experts out there who push it as being a theory and just that. Of course, most people who are doing that are primarily from the states which... I'm not surprised in the least."

"Woah... seriously?"

"Yeah. You even got some people claiming that it was all a hoax."

"A hoax?" James sounded so confused at that, making Martin hold back a snicker at the reaction.

"Yeah, some say the testing was, others say Godzilla is and another group says both. They say that both were made up to make the United States look bad."

Susan stared at Martin as if he had grown a second head, and Martin couldn't hold in a snicker this time and shrugged.

"Okay... moving on..." Susan slowly shook her head. "Tell us about the second paper."

"Yeah, does he really think that there's a second Godzilla?" asked James.

"Yep." Martin nodded as he took another sip of his coffee.

"A second Godzilla... what gave him that idea?" Susan questioned and Martin stood, gesturing for his siblings to follow before walking into his office and booted up his laptop.

He heard them walk up behind him as he waited for the laptop to finish turning on before going into his browser and clicking on a bookmarked page. A window appeared with a site that had archived articles from newspapers and the specific article that was dated at the tail end of November in 1984. It was a small one, just added at the last minute.

He took a step away so his siblings could read the article and he waited.

"So, he thinks that the creature that girl saw was another Godzilla, like the article said?" Susan looked at him.

"Yep." Martin nodded. "That's what he believes. To be honest... it's starting to make more sense the more I think about it."

"I'm not so sure... I mean, those islands were still radioactive at the time, right. So, could it be that she was just...hallucinating?"

"Susan, radiation does not cause hallucinations. I know it sounds like the girl was making it all up, but how else could she have gotten such a lethal dose that halved her lifespan like that? She didn't even live as long as the workers that looked into the core of Chernobyl. That wasn't that much radiation on that island. Hell, after what happened, the island became even more radioactive than before."

Susan looked shocked at that bit of information. She opened her mouth once before closing it, clearly deciding not to continue her questioning, not knowing what to say about this information at the moment.

"Okay, let's say there is another Godzilla running around." James spoke up. "Where has it been for all these years? Why hasn't it been seen until eighty-for?"

"Well–" Martin began but he was interrupted by a chime coming from his laptop's speakers. He quickly walked closer and clicked open another tab, making a forum appear on the screen. The top of the page read 'Freelancing Forum' and there were all sorts of threads that pertained towards freelance reporting and journalism.

At the bottom of the page was a chat box and there was a new message inside it.

'CaliFinest: Guys, you gotta turn on the news. Something crazy's been found!'

Martin frowned before he turned and walked out into his living room and grabbed the remote, turning on the TV and to the news channel.

On screen was aerial footage of a wrecked nuclear submarine in shallow water, some distance from the beach. The aft end was gone and there were deep gorges along the hull. The bottom of the screen had text that read 'Submarine remains found in Hawaii: Attack or Accident?'

"These are the first images we have right now." The anchor woman's voice began. "The vessel you see here was found at five in the morning in Honomalino Bay on the island of Hawaii."

The images changed to a camera on the ground with the cameraman seemingly on a rock outcrop to get a closer look at the wreckage. There were people in hazmat suits all around with geiger counters and, from the sounds of it that the camera could pick up, they were going crazy.

"As you can see and year, there's some radiation in the area surrounding and inside the vessel. We believe that it is left over radiation from the now missing reactor inside of the submarine–"

The siblings looked at one another, none of them saying a thing for a long moment as they absorbed what they had just seen and heard.

"Well... looks like I might be standing corrected." Susan was the first one to speak up, her face a bit white.

"Looks like it." Martin turned back to the news report.

"I uh... I think your scientist friend is onto something."

SCIENTIFIC BUILDING, ALTOONA

Martin walked up to the wooden door that held Timothy's plaque with his twin and sister in toe. He raised a fist and knocked and, when he was given the go ahead, opened the door and stepped inside. He could see Timothy had been looking over some papers at his desk, his TV on and looking a bit solemn.

"Okay, first thing's first. Doctor Nesbit, this is my twin James and our little sister, Susan. Susan, James, Doctor Timothy Nesbit" Martin introduced. "Now, did you see the news about Hawaii?"

"I just finished watching." Timothy told him.

"Well, looks like your theory is becoming increasingly plausible."

"I wish it wasn't."

"So, what are we going to do now? I'm not sure the government will listen to us on this. We don't really have any proof. They probably won't even give us the time of day."

"Godzilla will need to make landfall somewhere. I mean, no doubt his food supply in his territory will be running out by now." James glanced at them. "By then, it would already be too late."

Timothy nodded in agreement. "Perhaps, although there is a chance something will happen before he could cause destruction to cities and towns."

"And if something does happen that makes the world have concrete evidence of Godzilla's existence?" Marin asked.

"They would believe... but I fear there would be a repeat of what happened in the first attack. Two sides arguing if they should make Godzilla's existence public or not."

"There's a chance he won't come to the states, right?" Susan asked, concerned.

"Well, sure. But the chances of him landing somewhere other than on our soil is low. With my theory of both Godzillas having to feed on nuclear radiation..."

Martin felt as if the breath was knocked out of him as he followed Timothy's line of thinking. "And with him clearly being around Hawaii at some point last night or yesterday..."

"The nearest nuclear power plant is in California and that's where he might go if he gets hungry again." James finished the thought. "The aft end of the submarine was missing, where the nuclear reactor was, so it proves the theory correct."

"Do you think it's too late to tell anyone?" Martin asked.

Timothy shook his head. "No. Have you published our interview yet?"

"Not yet. I was going to work on it today."

"Publish it as soon as possible. Publishing it in the wake of the submarine could ignite the public in putting two and two together."

Martin thought for a moment before he nodded. "Consider it done. I'll write it up and send it to United World News before midnight."
