Ruby's POV
Blake manages to dodge Cardin's weapon, but she is forced back by a swing from his fist, making her unable to counter. I will give the jerk one thing, he's at least learned to not leave himself so open with his attacks. It has taken numerous losses from Pyrrha and Yang for him to get that drilled into his head, but at least he has finally learned. Speaking of the two, Yang hollers from my left.
"Come on, Blake! You got this!" My sis' shout makes my left ear start to ring, which I quickly start to rub with my hand. To help distract from the annoyance, I give Blake some encouragement of my own, like the good leader that I totally am.
"You can do it, Blake!" Yang laughs some as she sits back and I hear Weiss scoff a little from my right.
"Must you yell so loud?" Both Yang and I look over at our teammate.
"Oh, hush. We're just cheering Blake on." Yang says proudly as she then reaches over and pushes Weiss' shoulder gently, "That's what good teams do." Weiss rolls her eyes and shakes her head.
"Yes, I know that. I asked why you must do it so loudly." Weiss enunciated the last word as she then rubs her ear much like I did a second ago. "You'll blow out my eardrums if you keep that up." Yang and Weiss then start to go back an forth with some bickering as I turn back to focus on the real show. While my attention was away, Blake has managed to whittle down Cardin's aura which has helped even them out from Cardin's cheap opening moves. I start to bounce a little in excitement as I watch Blake do a backflip to dodge another swing from Cardin and then make a super cool pose when she lands. I see Cardin get real angry before slamming his mace on the ground behind him. He then drags it across the ground as he charges my faunus friend, which makes me wince. Yeah, the sound of the metal scraping the ground is agonizing to hear, so much so that it makes my two other teammates stop their arguing, but the idea of how much he is needlessly damaging his weapon is what bothers me the most. I feel bad for Blake though, since the scraping sound is gonna bother her more than me or anyone on our team. Blake's bow flattens a little, though unless you're looking for it and know why it does that, most wouldn't notice that little detail. The noise seems to distract Blake long enough that she is hit square in the chest and sent flying back with a loud grunt. She then hits the ground with a loud thud as she then lays there a little dazed. The buzzer then sounds off as Cardin then walks forward with his mace raised in the air. Before Cardin could do anything else, his mace gains a purple glow before then jerking backward on its own, pulling the bully back and making him fall on his rear. As Cardin voices his pain, the sound of high heels clicking on the ground fill the room as Professor Goodwitch walks onto the stage. Right now she has a slight scowl on her normally stoic face, but the moment she is center stage, our blonde teacher's face falls back to her normal look. Professor Goodwitch looks down at her tablet as she addresses the class.
"Students, do keep in mind that, yes, I am training you to take down opponents, you are not to further harm your fellow classmates once their aura has dropped below twenty-five percent. In a tournament setting, you would be disqualified on the spot and your opponent would take the win." She then turns to Cardin who was glaring at her during the little speech, "While in a classroom, setting it will earn you Saturday detention for trying it for a second time, Mr. Winchester," Cardin then hits the ground and mumbles something that I can't quite understand which then makes the professor look back at her tablet. "Adding misconduct on top of that means your weekend is now booked with Professor Port." Both Yang and I wince a little when Professor Port's name gets dropped. I don't know who's worse for detention, Miss Goodwitch or Professor Port, given that the mustached professor seems to get even more talkative and somehow his stories get even more boring than usual when in detention. Our instructor then looks back at the knight, who is now biting his tongue. "Next time will be a weeks detention. Please be sure to remember that for the future Mr. Winchester." Professor Goodwitch then looks to Blake. "Please do better to watch your surroundings next time, Miss Belladonna, and try to not let things distract you in the middle of a fight." Miss Goodwitch then turns her attention back to the rest of us in the class. "Also don't forget to get some more practice in during your spare time. The Vytal Festival will be here before you know it." Barely a second goes by after our teacher finishes her speech and the bell lets out its loud noise, signaling the end of class. As the rest of the class get up from their sets, Yang and I bounce out of our seats and onto our feet. Yang soon jumps over some of the other seats and pushes past the others as she makes her way to Blake, while I wait for Weiss to get up. Once my partner gets up, I use my semblance to rush over to my sister and her partner.
"Hey, Blake you did good out there!" My words seem to not please my black hair teammate. Blake puts her weapon away as she scoffs.
"No, I didn't." She says in a cold voice. It seems she's more upset about the loss than I thought. Then again, given who she was fighting, I would understand why she'd not like this. Off near the exit, I can hear the loud laughter of Cardin and his team as they walk out of the room. A laugh from Yang pulls my attention back to her and Blake. Just as Yang pats Blake's shoulder, Weiss arrives.
"Hey, you may have lost, but you did do good and it is not like he was fighting fair. We all know he took some cheap shots at you, especially at the beginning." I smile and even Weiss smiles in agreement. Just as Blake starts to lighten up some, our combat instructor comes over.
"I wouldn't call Mr. Winchester's moves "cheap", just pragmatic." The blonde teacher says. "Most of what your teammate's opponent did was perfectly legal in a tournament and would actually be recommended in a normal fight. He took advantage of your shortcomings, did his best to keep the pressure on, and didn't try to cause any grievous bodily harm such as breaking a limb. At least not until the very end of the match, which is why I stepped in." The teacher explains. "If you want to be able to best him next time, I would suggest changing your strategy or just following the advice I gave earlier." Blake then looks down with a nod as Yang does the same, only replacing the nod with her arms crossing.
"Alright, Miss Goodwitch. Thank you." My faunus teammate says. From how she is talking, I can tell that Blake is back to being disappointed. Yang the huffs a little before adding on in a mumble.
"Don't have to be so blunt though." Apparently, Professor Goodwitch heard that, as she directs her gaze towards Yang.
"Miss Xiao Long, I am to teach you and your classmates how to fight and how to win. I can not afford to hold back with my criticism, no matter how blunt it may be. Otherwise, I will fail in readying all of you for the real world." Despite the firmness to her voice, it seems to soften at the last sentence. I wonder why. Either way, our teacher then straightens back up while pushing her glasses up with her hand. As she fixes them she asks Yang a question. "Do you understand?" To which Yang admits defeat with, her shoulders slumping.
"Yes ma'am." Our professor then nods as she puts her hand down and turns to walk off. As she walks away Miss Goodwitch speaks.
"Good, now I suggest the four of you go use your weekend to study and practice for the next week. Good day." With that the professor uses her semblance to open the door to her office, allowing her to walk in. Then the door shuts, leaving my team and I alone in the arena.
"Well... You guys want to get going?" I quickly suggest. Yang puts her arms down as she and the others nod. The rest of us then start to walk towards the exit in silence. Yang seems a little angry, which I guess is from Miss Goodwitch's scolding her since she isn't joking or smiling as much as she usually does and is just looking straight ahead as we walk. Blake seems a bit flustered as well, since she has her head down as she walks, though now I don't know if it's from the match or from the professor's words. Man, I really wish Weiss would pipe up and say something or give me a clue on what I should say, but instead she is just staying quiet like the others. Come on Ruby think, you're the leader, you have to know what to say to cheer everyone up. As we walk out the doors, I start to think about what we could do now that its the weekend. Oh, I know! I then smile and turn to the others before saying, "You know-"
"So do you guys get what's up with the professor?" Yang says, interrupting me. Before I can comment, Weiss finally chimes in.
"What do you mean?"
"Oh come on, you all know exactly what I mean. Goodwtich has had a stick where it doesn't belong since day one. Heck, I'm pretty sure she's been like that longer." Hmm, I wonder why Yang said it like that when its stick up your butt. At least I think that's close enough since when Uncle Qrow said it, he was drunk and said another word, but semantics. Wait, don't get distracted, Ruby! Focus! Leader time!
"Well-" Weiss then cuts me off.
"Ah, I see. Not quite how I would phrase it, but I understand what you mean." Weiss then looks off to the side as she thinks and talks. "Though I agree she shouldn't bite her tongue with constructive criticism, it doesn't mean she has to be quite as... blunt." Weiss then looks back at us as Yang speaks before I can talk.
"Exactly!" After Yang's little outburst I try to speak, but the supposed quiet one of the group then cuts me off.
"Well, I've heard some rumors on why our instructor acts the way she does," Blake, why interrupt me?! Yang and Weiss both look towards the B in RWBY with a bit of surprise on their faces.
"Ooo, is Blake using them special ears for gossip hunting?" Yang asks in a teasing voice as she nudges her partner with her elbow, who in turn gives my sister an unamused look in response. Weiss then looks over to Blake with a slightly surprised expression.
"I have to say, you don't exactly strike me as a member of the Beacon rumor mill, Blake." The black-themed cat faunus just shrugs at our teammate's words.
"I'm not usually, I just listen when I think something will help with White Fang information." Yang and Weiss nod in understanding as Blake then blushes some. "And when there's anything about Ninjas of Love." Weiss shakes her head and sighs as Yang gives Blake a large grin and nudges her again. Blake pushes Yang away before she continues. "But apparently our professor wasn't always like this. She used to actually be quite cheerful." Blake's words shock all of us, including me. Shocks me so much that I almost forget that they keep interrupting me. Almost.
"Um-"
"Really?" Yang cuts me off. "The Glynda Goodwitch used to be cheerful?" Blake nods as she crosses her arms.
"Yeah, apparently she used to be really cheerful, would always be the first teacher at every event including ones that weren't related to her, and would actually try to joke with the students." Yang's jaw nearly drops to the floor as Weiss stares at Blake in shock.
"She would joke with students?" Blake gives Weiss a nod before elaborating.
"Yeah, though from what I've heard she wasn't the best at it." Yang then gets herself together before speaking.
"What, she had a few bad jokes so she does a one-eighty?" Blake gives a stunned expression as she shakes her head.
"No that's not at all why she's like this." I find myself, Weiss, and Yang all leaning in some to hear the reason.
"Wh-"
"Why then?" Before Blake could respond I shout out.
"WILL YOU STOP INTERRUPTING ME?!?" My words echo through the, thankfully, empty hallway. Amber, blue, and lilac eyes soon fall on me as my friends all look at me confused. My body then stiffens and my face heats up as I start to get too nervous and embarrassed to say anything. Yang's eyes then widen as she realizes what I mean. My big sister then starts to laugh as she pats my back some.
"Hehe, sorry about that Rubes. Next time speak up sooner." Blake seems to finally figure out what's happening, because she starts to smile and chuckle a little.
"Sorry Ruby." Weiss then rolls her eyes at this before saying.
"Back to the topic?" Both Yang and I nod as we all look back to Blake.
"Well it seems that there was a student attending the school when the professor first started teaching here." Blake says. "From what I have heard, she liked him a lot."
"Well?" Yang asks, "What happened to the guy?"
"I don't know. I never got a name, so I don't know what to search to look him up and none of the rumors I have heard go into too much detail about them." Hmm that's odd.
"So he just disappeared?" Both Yang and I ask at the same time. Blake gives us a shrug in response.
"Your guess is as good as mine." Well Blake seems to have exhausted all of her knowledge on the subject. We all stand in silence for a little bit as we take in the new information. I then clear my throat to get everyone's attention.
"Well there's no use in us just standing around dwelling on this. Its the weekend! We should do something fun!" My words seem to cheer everyone up as Yang gets her usual big smile, Blake goes back to her normal smile, and Weiss even smiles at me, "So come on guys. Let's get the weekend started." Everyone nods in response before Blake then asks.
"What do you have in mind Ruby." My face then falls as I realize something.
"I forgot what I was gonna suggest." The others laugh in response before Weiss makes a suggestion.
"Well its not soirée, but there are some new missions on the school bulletin boards that we could take. It would let us get out of the school some and give us a chance to practice like the professor says." Yang gets excited at the idea of going on a mission as Weiss continues, "And if none of the missions suit us we can always just go see a movie." My lips grow into a big smile as I jump over and hug Weiss.
"That's an awesome suggestion Weiss!" My cheek mushes against my teammate as said white haired student tries to push me away.
"Get off of me Ruby!" Eventually Weiss is able to push me off of her but I quickly recover and stand up straight.
"Alright, let's go with Weiss' idea." Weiss, Blake, and Yang nod in agreement before we all start walking to the bulletin boards. As we walk, Yang adds on with a grin.
"Hey, if there aren't any good movies we could always go to a club." Weiss scoffs as Blake rolls her eyes.
"No." Blake says bluntly which makes my loud sister's laugh come out. We soon make it to the school bulletin board, standing shoulder to shoulder as we look over the missions. Hmm there are a lot so its not like we are lacking. I look past some of the ones that will take the whole weekend and focus on some of the simple ones.
"Oh here's a simple one." I point to one of the missions, ""Wanted, Alpha Beowolf and pack". That seems pretty simple." Blake just shrugs as Weiss looks over the details.
"Hmm, seems easy enough." Yang looks a little disappointed at the simple mission.
"You sure? Seems pretty bland."
"Well we don't want to spend the whole weekend on one mission, right? Besides, this gives us a chance to do other stuff like go to the movies." My words convince Yang, who is now nodding with a smile. Weiss then adds on.
"Or work on homework." At Weiss' words Yang is now frowning and shaking her head no.
"Or rest?" I quickly add on. Yang then starts smiling and nodding again.
"Alright that sounds good. Let's take the mission!" My smile grows as I then poke the mission tab and enter in our team name. The bulletin board screen then says "Team Accepted" before then going back to normal, but with the mission tab now blacked out with the words "Mission Underway By: Team RWBY".
"Perfect!" My voice draws my team's attention back to me, "Let's get some extra ammo from the room and then head out." The others nod in agreement before we all head off to get the mission started.
Later that Day
The flight over is pretty uneventful, with Yang mostly telling bad jokes and puns as Blake reads her book. Once we get to the village, we all file out of the vehicle with the pilot getting out too. Apparently, she's not allowed to leave without us, so if anything goes wrong we know where to go. Well that's pretty nice of her. We then make our way to the leader of the village to try and learn anything else before we head out. It doesn't take long for us to find the leader, since their town hall is pretty distinct from the rest of the buildings, but its not too big for us to get lost in, allowing us to get to the office. Once inside we meet the nice brown haired woman, who greets us warmly. As we get talking though, I can tell she is a little disappointed that a group of first years took the miss. Well I can't wait to make her regret that.
"So the mission said that there was an Alpha Beowolf. Is it just like any old alpha or are there any special traits or marks on it?" Though Yang and I were trying to work up to the topic, Weiss gets straight to the chase with this. Guess there's no time like the present. The tall, slim village mayor nods at Weiss' words and pulls out a picture for us.
"Well besides being bigger and having the extra bones, its teeth and claws have an odd red glow to them." Looking closely at the picture, I can make out the glow that she mentioned. Hmm that's not a common trait, even among old Grimm. It probably means nothing, but we should keep our guard up. Plus it will be easier to pick out from the rest. My eyes then move down to the smaller Beowolf with almost no bones next to the Alpha. "It also has an Omega by it at all times. When we tried to shoot at the big one, the Omega got in the way of the bullet, so the Alpha is smart enough to keep a meat shield nearby." Okay that's not a good sign. "We don't know if it has just one Omega or if it has multiple since, from what we can tell, the pack is fifteen in total." Just keeps getting better and better
"How long have you been dealing with this things?" The mayor lets out a frustrated sigh in response.
"We really didn't have much trouble with Grimm until a few weeks ago when this pack just showed up out of nowhere. We've gone hunting for some ourselves, we've been doing as much as we can to help keep everyone in a good mood, we've even built some barricades to help keep them out, but the pack just keeps coming back. I've been racking my brain for an answer, but nothing seems to be working." I look over at my team before we all nod at once.
"Don't worry miss, we'll make sure to take care of them for you." She looks up and give us a small smile.
"Thanks, just try not to get yourselves killed out there, okay?" We all nod at her before heading out. Once outside of the building we group up and come up with a plan.
"So we heading out now or should we wait until nightfall?" Yang asks as she looks up at the evening sky. As the others look at me, I answer her.
"I think we should head out now. We don't want to waste anytime, plus the Beowolves will have the advantage once its dark, so we don't want to give them that." Yang nods in agreement before Blake comments.
"Well I can see in the dark, so it's not like we're at that much of a disadvantage." I quickly respond again.
"True, but the rest of us don't, so it would be best for us to try and find them while it is still light out." Everyone nods at my words. After all of that, we start towards the woods. While walking through the village, we see some of the damage that the Grimm have done. Near the village "hospital", there are tons of people who are waiting outside with varying injuries on them all. As we get to the edge of the village we see destroyed fences that used to hold livestock, large claw marks on the back of buildings, and we even see villages working on rebuilding the place's barricades.
"Jezz we really need to help these people." Yang mumbles out. I nod in agreement as the others keep looking around the village at the damage. As leave the village I finally ask the others.
"So what do you guys think drew the Grimm here?" Blake and Yang shrug as Weiss starts to think aloud.
"Well going off of what the mayor said, the Grimm couldn't have been drawn by the villagers. At least not originally." The white haired heiress crosses her arms as she tries to think. "There may be bandits nearby, drawing the Grimm here or there's an unknown village nearby that's not as mellow as the village we're trying to save." Weiss then goes a little quiet as she tries to think, "Those are all I can think off." Blake then begrudgingly adds on.
"Some of the White Fang move around to places like this." We all look at her surprised before keeps going, "The woods make for good hiding places and its easier to get supplies from a nearby small village." After Blake finishes Weiss then asks.
"So the Grimm follow those White Fang groups?" Blake nods.
"Yeah... The groups that roam like that were already fringe members of the group before people like Adam showed up. Now they're worse." Her face darkened some at the mention of her old friend. Yang gently pats Blake's shoulder and our friend then perks up. Weiss then nods and goes back to thinking.
"Well its either bandits, White Fang, or some unknown group. We shouldn't worry too much about them now, just the Grimm, but we should be on guard if we come across something more."
"Sounds good Weiss." I say happily as I get excited and accidently walk faster than the others, which makes them laugh a little.
Timeskip to that Night
Well this could have gone better. That thought runs through my head as I think over the past events. The Grimm were harder to find than they were to kill. The Alpha was easy to kill once we got its Omega, which I took out easily. For what started so well went down hill pretty fast. Turns out Blake was right, it was a White Fang group that drew the Grimm here. Even better, the group had Blake's old friend in it. Well in a short time we were all on our back foot with these guys. Adam was so assured that he could beat us he sent the rest of his group back to their camp, leaving only a big guy with a chainsaw to fight with him. Right now Blake was holding her side from a nasty hit, Yang was panting hard from the fight, and I was standing next to a kneeling Weiss.
"Hehe, well this has been fun," Adam says as his lips curl into a smirk, "But I'm growing bored with this, my darling." The red head then reaches towards his sword and the The chainsaw wielder reves his weapon when he sees what his leader is doing. Blake then tenses up and Yang steps between him and I as we prepare for the worst. Just as the White Fang members crouches into a battle stance, a shout and scream come a scream come from behind him, causing all six of us to turn back towards the woods. My eyes widen in shock as other White Fang members run towards us, with one of them even having blood going down his face.
"Boss!" The bloody one shouts. Without his mask on, I'm able to see the terror that's in his eyes, "We gotta get out of here!" His leader is taken back by this as he straightens up a little.
"What? Are there actual huntsmen here?" Back up?! Awesome! Unless they aren't good guys. Oh I hope its back up for us. Before the bleeding one can answer, a faunus with antlers in a panicked voice does.
"Grimm!" Fooy. Soon enough, the red glare of the monsters can be seen from the dark of the woods. Blake's ears flatten some as Weiss' face goes flush. Yang then mumbles something that I can't quite make out as I start to formulate a plan. Okay there are too many Grimm and they are too varied for a team of Beacon students to take down. We have multiple Beowolves, Boarbatusk, Creeps, and Ursa, so we can't do this alone. We have about sixteen White Fang members too, so even if we could somehow make a truce to take out the Grimm, we wouldn't have much of a chance.
"Alright best case scenario, we can use the Grimm as a distraction to retreat. As long as we stay calm, we shouldn't draw too many Grimm to us." Weiss' scoff soon reaches my ears.
"Stay calm?" The white haired heiress asks in a shocked voice.
"Hey, I said it was the best case scenario." Yang then looks back at us with a red glare of her own.
"Stop it!" She growls out before looking directly at me, "Any other ideas?" Blake interrupts before I can respond.
"We have to go with that, since there are more Grimm coming." Looking past Yang, I see that some of the Grimm have now emerged from the woods and there are more red eyes behind them. Oh crud, Blake has night vision, so she's probably seeing even more Grimm than the rest of us.
"Alright," My voice pulls my team's attention back to me, "We go with that plan. Weiss, get ready to give us a speed boost. Blake, you're on look out duty since you can see better than us. Everyone got the plan?" Once I see them all nod, I give a nod in response, "Good. Now get ready for the signal." After I finish, Blake looks forward again on high alert as Weiss stabs the ground and make a glyph form beneath us. Yang then gets back into a battle stance to give the illusion that we're staying to fight, which doesn't seem too necessary, since our enemies seem more focused on the Grimm than us. Once the White Fang get to Adam and his companion, some of them double over and pant while others look to him for guidance. I can hear his growl from here and even over some of the Grimm noises.
"Idiots!" He angrily says, "I can't leave you alone for a minute!" Well that's no way to treat your teammates. He then lets out a gruff sigh, "Alright, get the injured out of the way and get ready to fight." Once the leader finishes, however, the Grimm are already too close, so everyone rushes to get to work. Dang, they are fast! Looking over at Weiss and then at the glyph reveals that she isn't ready yet.
"Alright we'll have to fight!" I rush out my words since Adam and his subordinates soon start to slash and shoot at the black creatures of the night. Thankfully Yang and Blake heard me, because they both get their weapons in their gun modes and start to open fire at any Grimm that get past the faunus group in front of us. As I switch Crescent Rose into her gun mode, I give an order, "Focus on the Grimm that are coming straight at us!" I then fire a four shots at some Grimm that are right in front of me, hitting one that got passed the White Fang, two that are at the line, and a fourth that hasn't yet reached the other group. Yang stops just randomly firing and aims for all of the Grimm that have gotten past the White Fang and are coming at us as Blake tries to provide cover for some of the Fang while following Yang's example. This carries on for an eternity, though it was probably just a minute when the glyph under us gets to the right size and color, signalling that its done. Before Weiss can say anything though, Adam holds up his hand and shouts.
"Stop! Hold your fire!" Wait what? One of his fellow White Fang members is on the same wavelength as me.
"What?! But the Grimm?" Adam's chainsaw wielding friend then hits him over the back of the head.
"That's an order!" The gruff man says. After that all of them stop shooting, but they don't bother lowering their weapons. If I wasn't already so shocked, then I would be picking my jaw up off the floor, because besides one Beowolf that Adam has to slash with his weapon, all of the Grimm seem to run past them. Some of the other members look on, astonish as the Grimm seem to ignore them entirely. As they do that, Blake's shots slow down as she mutters something. She then stops and looks around us and I follow suit. Sure enough, most of the Grimm just run past us too, with Yang's fire able to kill the few that come at us. As my older sister notices the lack of gun fire and turns to us, Blake moves forward and squints at the woods.
"What are you guys doing?!" She asks in shocked anger, "Do you want to get us killed!?" I quickly shake my head.
"No, Yang, look!" My hand shoots out towards some of the Grimm and Yang follows my arm to the direction I'm pointing, "The Grimm are running past us." This shocks my sister as much as it did Blake and I, as my words continue, "Almost like they are running away from something."
"Someone." Blake manages to get out. Yang and I look at her shocked, which gets her to just point past the other group and towards the woods. I squint and try to see what Blake is seeing.
"I don't see..." I don't bother finishing my sentence because after a second or two, I see a cloaked figure walking towards all of us. Before I can say something else, two young Beowolves lunge at the figure with their claws out and their fangs bared for all to see. Just as the two monsters get close to mauling the person, they move in such a fluid motion which causes the two beasts to collide with each other and fall to the ground. The person then easily moves back to their normal walking pace while the beasts snarl and bite at each other as they try to untangle themselves and get up. I have no clue who this person is, because the way they perfectly dodged the attacks and how fluidly they moved is like nothing I have ever seen. I hope they're on our side. The newcomer keeps walking forward at a steady pace as a few more Grimm run away. Once the person gets out of the darkness of the woods and into the light, the two wolf like monsters finally get up onto their feet again. The monsters then charge forward again, ready to kill. Just as the two Grimm get close to the person, Adam quickly reaches for his weapon and glows red.
"Look out!" The words rush out of my mouth before I can think at the same time as Adam's blade leaves his sheath and slashes the air, sending out energy at Grimm and the mystery person. The cloaked figure effortlessly bends backwards, just barely dodging the energy, which quickly slashes the two black beasts in half, killing them. Right after I blink the cloaked figure rushes forward and I think knees Adam in the chest, sending him flying towards us. The White Fang leader then lands on the ground with a loud thud, kicking up some dust in the process. Everyone stands in silence for a minute, staring at the newcomer in astonishment. Then it hits me, this is who the Grimm were running from. After some time the chainsaw wielder then growls loudly.
"Bastard!" He shouts out as he swings his weapon down at the figure, who dodges out of the way, causing the big man to almost hit one of his lizard faunus teammates. Luckily the reptilian faunus moves enough out of the way to avoid being killed, though I can't say the same about his weapon. So sad.
"Hey!" The lizard faunus protests. Before his boss can respond the cloaked figure kicks him upward with one leg while pivoting and then swiftly kicks him away with the other leg. The chainsaw wielder then flies back and takes two other White Fang members down with him as the newcomer gets back to a normal stand. The other members then get angry expressions as they get ready to fight, with the nearest two faunus coming at the person from their right and left. The lizard faunus on the right quickly stands and tries to punch down for a gut punch as the faunus on the left tries to tackle the unknown person. The cloaked figure somehow manages to dodge the punch by kneeling down, allowing the lizard to punch the mouse faunus in the mask, sending her to the ground and making the lizard reel back in pain from hitting the mask. The figure then seems to spring up, headbutting the lizard faunus in the face before then headbutting him again, this time downward, sending the lizard to the ground. Thankfully the person's hood is forced back because of all the motion and I can finally get a good look at their face. I now know our mysterious guest is a man with almost shoulder length (H/C) hair and a short rough unkept (H/C) beard to match. Honestly it looks like he hasn't seen razor in years. Before I can get anymore details, the man jumps to the side as a faunus leaps to get him, making them fall to the ground. The big second in command then growls before shouting out his orders.
"Get him!" The others take the order and then start to rush at the cloaked man with an intent to kill. One of the faunus goes in swinging his sword wildly as he tries to hit the guy. The faunus is swinging so carelessly that he would have cut the lizard faunus from earlier, who was trying to get up. If it was for the cloaked guy kicking the lizard, his teammate would have cut him in two. The lizard faunus then falls forward, on top of the mouse faunus, pinning her to the ground. The man then moves in close and trips up the sword used and then without looking kicks another faunus who was charging at him from behind as the sword wielder hits the ground. Once his enemy is down, the unknown man then kicks the blade out of his enemy's hands, sending it forward and making the other faunus fall as they try to avoid it as Adam coughs as he tries to get up. He then brings his foot down hard on the former blade user's stomach, knocking the wind out of him. Whoever this guy is, he is good. In just a few seconds he's managed to not get hit once, has knocked a good number of the others off their feet, and has taken down three of the sixteen. The second in command has finally gotten to his feet and gotten the two who were beneath him onto their feet. Another faunus, this one a fox, rushes the guy from behind with a blade in hand, but just as he gets close, the person sidesteps him and makes the fox faunus rush into a few of his companions, who were charging him from the front. The fox faunus then shouts as he fall into his friends.
"What the f-!" he gets cut off for some reason as the others in the group push past him to get to their assailant, who has now crouched into I think a running stance. He then sprints forward before leaping into the air, over the front part of the group. He then slams his foot down on one of the other big faunus and kicks off of his head, sending the cloaked man back into the air and the big faunus to the ground. Once he gets close to falling again, he pushes off another faunus, though this time it is the antlered faunus from earlier, who falls backwards onto the ground with her legs bent.
"Ompf!" The antlered girl makes the pained sound as the others turn to face the man, who is using the momentum he got from jumping off of her to tackle another enemy to the ground. The two then fall back as another faunus goes to help her up. The mysterious fighter then rolls to off of the faunus he tackled and onto his feet, pushing him closer to the red head leader. The group then charge forward at the man again, though this time they are spread out to avoid a repeat of the previous events.
"Alright, now we got him!" One of the female faunus says to the rest. She then lunges at him from his side, but he back steps and once she's in front of him, he knees her in the gut. As she falls down to the ground, another three jump at him from the front and from the sides behind him. The cloaked man the jumps up and lets them all collide with each other head first. Apparently the chainsaw wielder saw this coming because he throws his weapon at the person. Just when I think he's done for, there's a loud scraping noise which is then followed by the sound of metal hitting metal. I blink my eyes a couple of times since I can't find the chainsaw. When the cloaked person lands on top of the four downed White Fang members, I see a glint from something metal on the ground. I then see the chainsaw is now laying on the ground in pieces.
"What the hell?!" The big guy says in his rage. Looking over I see what the person used to break the chainsaw. In his right hand is a katana like sword, though it looks a bit odd and honestly doesn't look like it has been well kept for a long time. Before I can get steamed over him neglecting his blade, the cloaked man then runs at the big faunus. As the big guy tries to swing at the person, the cloaked man then jumps and kicks him square in the chest, sending him back before falling to the ground. As the mysterious sword wielder lands on his feet, the other still standing faunus are already charging at him, but before they can get close, a loud voice then shouts out.
"Stop!" The source of the voice then steps forward with his hand resting on the hilt of his blade. The other faunus are caught off guard by this, with some even stumbling and falling to the ground.
"Sir?" One of the White Fang members who fell asks. He is then silenced when Adam glares at him. The bull faunus then directs his glare back at the man who kicked the redhead onto his back, who is currently looking over his shoulder at Adam.
"You're mine." Adam growls out the words as he crouches down. The other man doesn't seem too intimidated as he just calmly turns around and looks at Adam. The two then stare each other down for a minute, before charging at each other. In a flash, Adam's blood red blade clashes with the unknown person's sword. Their blades spark as they clash, before Adam then gets a surprised look on his face. The other person's blade then seems to effortlessly slide up the length of the red blade allowing the cloaked person to move closer. Once he is, he then moves to the slide and easily spins around to behind Adam. Then the cloaked man hits Adam's back with the hilt of the man's blade, sending the redhead forward. Though he isn't able to give a follow up attack do to the bull faunus recovering quickly from the hit, the cloaked man is able to get some distance between the two of them and turn around so that Adam can't back attack him. For some reason the cloaked person quickly rolls the blade in his hand so that he is now holding it backwards. Adam then tries to shoot at the man's feet with his scabbard, but his opponent dodges it as if he knew it was coming and catches Adam off guard with him moving towards the faunus. The two then take a few swings at each other, but as they keep striking each other, it soon becomes clear that Adam is on defense rather than offense. Then for some reason the cloaked man flips his sword around again. When Adam goes to strike him again, the blade just slides again which allows the cloaked man to then slash upwards, sending Adam stumbling back. As the White Fang member stumbles back his mask then splits down the middle before falling off Adam's face. The redhead is so caught off guard while scrambling to cover his face, that the cloaked man is able to back away. As the cloaked man backs up and the other White Fang members soon rush forward to get to their leader or just get the man, I pull myself out of the daze that I was in and fire a few bullets at the charging White Fang. My shots seem to get my team out of their daze as well, as the others, minus Weiss, start firing at the White Fang members. The cloaked man easily dodges anything that gets close to him as the White Fang help get their leader to safety. Weiss then shouts to me.
"Ruby! The we're ready!" I hesitate for a minute, not wanting to leave the cloaked man behind, but even all of the noise we've made, there are bound to be braver Grimm heading this way and I know we can't take much more fighting.
"Okay! Blake! Yang!" Both of them look back at me and the glyph beneath us before nodding. A yellow outline then covers all of us before we quickly turn and sprint away from the cloaked man and the White Fang. Sounds of fighting and gun fire fade away from behind us, as we do our best to get back to the nearby village. With my semblance I outpace the others, so I take the lead and make sure to mow down any Grimm or obstacles that get in our way. Once I can't hear anymore gun fire I stop at the nearest clearing and then use the remaining time on the speed boost to make a clear opening for the others and clear away some of the ground. Just as I kill a Grimm that was getting too close, the others arrive in the nick of time, because the yellow outline fades away from our bodies. Weiss rests with a hand on the tree as everyone tries to catch their breath. Yang soon asks through panted breaths.
"Wh-what... just happened?" We all look at her and then each other, trying to get an answer for her.
"We should probably get back to the village." My words are strained a little as I try to catch my breath, "We can ask about that guy there..." Yang then tries to continue before an Ursa goes flying through the hole that I made in the woods. Blake's head then snaps to the clearing as she reaches for her weapon. I'm second to get ready for a fight and I think the last as well since Yang and Weiss still seem a bit winded. I then prepare for the worse. Instead of that, another two Ursas fall forward, one missing its head and another missing its front two legs as the cloaked man steps forward. He still has his hood down so I can better see his face and his beard and hair is worse than I thought. His beard is all bushy with twigs caught in it and his hair is uneven, like he tried to cut it himself, failed, and then just let it grow out. I can get a closer look at his eyes, allowing me to see that his (E/C) eyes are very bloodshot. Looking down at his cloak reveals that it is a patchwork of different clothes, fabrics, and I think animal fur. Right now, his patchwork cloak has a fresh red stain on it that will join the other faded stains that lay across the cloak. My eyes widen when I finally get a look at his sword. Oh my Oum.
"Is that a reverse bladed sword?! I've only seen pic-"
"Ruby!" Yang's shout pulls me from my thoughts as I realize that I was a few steps closer to the unmoving man with Crescent Rose lowered. My cheeks warm a little as I take a step back and raise my prized weapon back up. All five of us stand in silence as the man looks us over. He then lets out a loud cough as he covers his mouth with the same hand he is holding his weapon with. He then clears his throat again before he struggles to speak in a low raspy voice.
"S-sorry about earlier." He then coughs again before continuing, "I-I mean... no harm... otherwise I would h-ave..." He then breaks out into a coughing fit as Blake then speaks.
"You would have earlier with the White Fang?" The black haired faunus questions, "Or you would have let the four Ursas get us?" He nods as he covers his coughing mouth with his hand. "I'll take a guess that you mean either our." He continues to nod as he finally stops coughing and just lets his throat rest some, allowing me to ask Blake.
"Four Ursas?" My teammate then says bluntly.
"Behind him is another one. Either someone else is out here or I'm gonna guess he cut it in half." He gently points at his chest with the hilt of his sword. He then takes a deep breath as he then sheathes his blade.
"Sorry... I h-haven't talked in awhile..." He then takes a deep breath as Blake puts her weapon away and the rest of us follow suit. The man then clears his throat again as I try and break the ice.
"Well, my name is Ruby Rose and these are my teammates in team RWBY." I say with a proud and happy smile. The mysterious man then smiles at me as he nods.
"My name is (Y/N) (L/N)."
