Chapter 24

"For the last time, you can't choose what I do with my fucking life!"

The room fell silent at my outburst and I could feel the shocked looks from the royal family who had decided that I knew something important, something that had managed to knock out the council and leave them snoozing away in the other room.

But the truth was that I was still stuck in my world, waiting to wake up and go to work and visit my mother once again. But my reality was far worse than lectures and overtime.

"Why don't we start at the beginning and you can fill in the bits we're missing, child."

I reluctantly nodded at the king, I needed answers as much as him. I was sick of playing 'Guess what comes next' with my life while others planned it out.

"My parents, my real parents were who exactly?" The princes both sighed and looked at each other.

"Your father was The Lost King, the first family on the elven throne. Your mother was the Inibrius Queen but we don't know much else about her."

"Right and when exactly was I born? Because I know for damn certain I'm not older than twenty four."

Damascus spoke up before his father. "You were born nearly two hundred years ago. We have been over this many times. You're the product of two immortal races so of course you don't age."

The king raised an eyebrow but didn't say anything. "By technicalities, you're about the age of twenty in our race maybe a little younger."

I nodded I was younger than I thought and it seemed to be showing, all I wanted was to roll my eyes and leave. "Why does everyone keep kidnapping me if they want me on their side so bad?"

"In our world, we don't need for someone to fight with us. All that's needed is for them to fight for us."

I looked at the queen, disbelief covering my face. "You... that... that doesn't make any sense!"

"Ooookay. Let's dumb it down shall we? In human terms." Damascus leaned forward, resting his hand on the table. "In this realm, there is magic. You know the stuff that makes miracles possible? Yeah, well they can use that on you in order to make you fight for them. You wouldn't get a choice of fighting with anyone. You would be forced to fight for the people."

Who pissed in his kibble.

Gerais busted out laughing and Damascus turned slowly between the two of us.

"So child, what did you tell the council of your choice?"

I looked to the king who sat rigid, almost like he would break in two at any moment.

"Choice about what? There wasn't really a lot of talking before I came in here."

Although I did keep in mind that I needed to find out why I was alive abs why of all people the Damascus was standing over me with a lady I didn't remember.

"You weren't told of your choice?"

I shook my head and the king turned to his sons, "Leave the room please."

They got up slowly, before striding out of the room. This couldn't be good.

When the door shut the king watched it for a moment more before turning back to me.

"Lillian, will you be fighting with us."

I furrowed my brows. "Of course." That seemed obvious considering the Inibrius had murdered everyone I knew.

"Well, in a few weeks time, a ball will be held. And that is the night of the eclipse."

I nodded, eclipses seemed to be rare here.

"You do know that you will be powerful, correct?" The queen looked at me, expecting a reply.

All I did was nod. Yes, I knew I had to because of the powers they were scared of. But I wasn't about to run off and marry a random person just for control of the non existent things.

"I don't mean to be blunt about it, child, but we do have our ways and they are followed for good reasons. At the ball, there will be royalty and higher ups from every fae kingdom."

"And what choice am I supposed to make?"

"The ball marks your two hundreth year and the return of royalty. It is intended for you."

Oh I could tell there was a huge 'but' coming after she finished speaking.

"You need to choose a husband. Before the ball."

I stood up so fast that I got queasy from the change in distance. Or maybe it was what she said. "You want me to choose in a week who I'm going to marry!? Are you insane!?"

They looked bewildered. "We thought you had been told."

"Yeah! I was told only this morning of h9w this all works! I'm not going to marry a man that I meet at a ball!"

"Oh well, you won't meet them at the ball. You'll have two weeks to choose. They will arrive soon. You shall meet them in three days."

Without another word they stood from their seats and left. An air of finality hung around me, suffocating me with every breath.

I didn't quite have a choice in the matter seeing as how I couldn't leave.

And then it hit me.

I would use the time to figure out how to leave. To figure out how to get back to the human world and to leave all of their madness behind me.

To escape a marriage, torture and dangerous people that were hiding around every corner.

I would find a way home.
