GAME OVER
Chapter 18 [Useless]
~~~~~
Adam groaned. He felt a fuzzy feeling, like feathers being brushed all over his body. His eyes were heavy but he opened them slowly.
He wasn't on the ravine floor anymore... he was back in Seto's cave. He recognized the blank surroundings as his room connected to the main room. Adam tried to get up but winced, "So you're finally awake."
He turned his head and saw Seto standing in the doorway, "S-Seto...I-I'm--"
"Save it, what happened is no concern of mine," he turned away but paused, "I already gathered the materials. I'm preparing to enchant them now, stay out of the way and don't bother me."
Adam lowered his eyes, "Seto?" But Seto had already left.
Adam didn't feeling like moving, he didn't feel like going anywhere, he didn't even feel like doing anything for that matter. Normally he was an optimist...but sometimes a person just reaches their limit for how long they can smile.
He felt like he reached his.
He remembered that day. The first time he realized the truth of society. He was 6 years old and he was almost done with his first year as a Tier 5 student. The entire class was gathered in a circle sharing their dreams and aspirations of what they hoped to be as an adult.
He remembered it as clear as day. When he spoke those fateful words, that desire to be the first, that hope to be a hero.
Sometimes Adam's mind would wander and he'd come back to that day 13 years ago. He imagined as the children around him roared with laughter that he would stand in front of himself, his tiny self.
He imagined that the him looking down at the younger self would ask, "Why?"
It was a question that held countless more in its spaces.
Why did we say that?
Why does everyone have to laugh?
Why is that dream so ridiculous?
...
Why do we even want to be a hero?
That last question was the one that always seemed to bother him the most. He could answer all the others with ease. For the first he would say, "Because it's what we wanted." For the next he would say, "Because people found it funny." And for the one after he would say, "Because it really was ridiculous."
But he could never answer the last one. He knew that he wanted it, but he didn't know why he wanted it. He just did, but Adam so badly wanted that question answered. He so badly wished he knew why it was so important that he stood here, why he needed to stand here. But he just never knew the answer.
And neither did the tiny him from 13 years ago.
Adam also remembered another memory. That same day after his mother picked him up and she drove them home together. He remembered asking her "Do you think I can be a hero one day? Like the Players?"
His mother never let her dulled yellow eyes leave the road, but she did answer his question.
"Only if the god's allow it."
He never understood that answer, but he never brought it up again.
Nonetheless, the appearance of such a memory meant once again Adam was at a loss. He wasn't sure where to go from here anymore or if he should even continue.
Adam was beginning to think that maybe he wasn't the right guy for the job.
Maybe it would be better if a more suited person was in his shoes.
"Jason, I you're in there, open the door," the sound of a fist pounding on the door to the guest room Jason was currently staying in. Jason sighed, he wasn't in the mood right now.
Plus he already had what he needed.
"Go away old hag!" Jason hissed, the pounding stopped. Suddenly the door was broken down.
"What the nether did you call me you short brat."
Jason sat up from the queen sized he was laying on. His door was broken in half and the woman before him was none other than the bothersome Jess Mau. Second member of the King's council and also head of the separate AHD branch referred to as the D.R.O.P. Force. The D.R.O.P Force was basically a police force of sorts. They don't normally deal with external threats like mobs and such, but mainly handle internal threats, criminals and the such.
"I called you an old hag," Jason stuck out his tongue.
"Why you little--I'm not even 200 years older than you!" Jess marched forward. Jason and Jess stared each other down before Jason opened his mouth.
"Well, is there something you want? I already said everything I needed to say in the throne room and you already signed and agreed. Do you have something else you want to say to me?"
"Damn, you really tick me off sometimes," Jess took a step back and calmed herself, "I just came to ask you want you really wanted from the End."
"What do you mean what I really want? I already said all of this in the throne room--were you not liste--"
"Cut the crap Jason, we both know you're as selfish as a spoiled brat." Jess crossed her arms in front of the brilliant engineer who held no reaction to her comments, "You can spout all you want about the benefits for the kingdom, but Notch knows you only look for what benefits you. So tell me what are you aiming for?"
"It's really none of your business, now is it? It hardly matters either, since there will be plenty of ways to also help the kingdom, so why does it matter why I want to go?"
Jess gritted her teeth.
"Or maybe you still hold that grudge against me after all. Is that it?" Jason hopped off the bed and said, he rolled up the sleeves of his oversized lab coat. Normally he didn't mind those sleeves hanging way past his fingertips, but he felt they were in the way at the moment. He began to walk around the room and felt Jess' eyes glare daggers into his back as he moved.
"I thought that was all water under the bridge. That is what you said, and besides, it had nothing to do with me," Jason continued as he walked over to where he took off his boots and sat down to slip them on. He was quite fond of these boots, they were heavy, but they were quite handy.
"Your father's death has nothing to do with me--"
Jess cut him off, "He died protecting your life, don't you even feel awful for the disrespect you show my father by the way you speak about him as if you had nothing to do with him!"
"And I didn't. My relation to your father was nothing more than first-time acquaintances, and besides, because of his death, you got what you always wanted. A promotion. You're standing in his shoes now, you're holding his job now. Why don't you act a little happier--hey! Do you know a good place I can get some coffee?"
Jason waved goodbye and walked out of the room, "That son of a bitch!" Jess hissed, "That selfish, cold-hearted bastard!"
Jess ran out the room, "Hold it! You brat! You selfish prick!" Jason ignored her and kept walking. He wasn't fond of disturbances, but what he did like was cake, and lots of it! Actually, he was thinking if he should wander the castle and see if he could find some royal delicacies he could eat before he would have to leave.
"I'm talking to you!"
"Yes, and I'm ignoring you, goodbye."
But Jess was right. He had more reasons for a trip to the End. In fact he was finally going to complete his research. Everything was in place, everything was perfect. All the cards were in order; all the pieces were in place.
~~~~~
Two days later and a car drove into the AHD. Adam was on his rounds of delivering papers and materials to different locations on the AHD. He noticed the car but hurriedly ignored it.
"Adam!" Adam jumped when he heard someone shout his name and turned to see a figure running across the wooden bridge to him.
"I am so sorry Adam! I forgot your spawnpoint has to be manually set! I am so sorry for ruining this opportunity for you!" IT was Tyler, behind him was Barney and O.
"T-Tyler, you guys are back--and don't worry. It probably wouldn't have made much of a difference anyway... I'm really not cut out to be--"
"Don't worry kiddo!" Tyler skidded to a stop, "I'll make this up to you! I'll help you train twice as hard so you can build up your strength and then I'll get you signed up for a new mission ASAP!"
"No, really it's fine," Adam set down the box he was carrying.
"Yos dudes," Barney waved, Adam returned the wave with a sheepish grin.
"Tyler, I'll go find Mr. Lox and hand in our report,"
"Thank you O," Tyler looked back at Adam, "So what have you been doing while you were here?"
"Just running errands, you know...the usual."
"Well!" Tyler placed a firm hand on Adam's shoulder, "Why don't we got practice some more, those sword skills won't improve itself!"
"I need to finish up today's--"
"Nonsense, if anyone asks, I'll vouch for you. We can have your friend Barney help too."
"Yas dude, lets gos!" Barney cheered.
"N-no thank you." Adam shrugged off Tyler's hand. He took a step back and picked up his box, "I really think I should just get back to my job."
Adam turned away, "Hey, you ok kiddo? "
"Do you know when Jason is coming back?" Adam suddenly asked.
"He's not here? Well, then I unfortunately don't, why? Is something the matter?"
Adam sighed, his shoulders slumped, "I want to quit."
