Chapter 3

Before the day has started for the masses I am already in my kitchen, fully dressed and ready to go. Outside it is as black as night, only by the clock can I tell the difference between the time to sleep and the time to rise. The dawn will come as I walk to the factory, lighting my way first in monochrome and then with subtle hues of color. I will be at the machines long before the day is bright. I miss the many subtle greens of the trees and the grasses, I long for the multitude of vibrant hues from the city parks, the sky and even passing cars. Under the artificial glow of the street-lamps, they are sallow and dull. By the time I leave for home it will be well onto twilight, I can only hope for a sunset, a burnt orange sky to warm my fitful dreams. Admiring the sky my phone rings in my pocket, I got a text from Andre.

"Morning sweetheart, the sky right now is so beautiful just like you, I hope I didn't wake you up. I wanna you up today, I have a surprise for you. I noticed how you looked a little down yesterday, I'm sorry. I love you! Good Morning."

Reading his text a big smile crosses my face, happy that he's coming and happy he noticed. I can't really get anything passed him, he knows me, and I know him, I never want to lose this feeling, ever. I go back upstairs and change into a casual white dress, going back downstairs into the sun room I finish watching the sunrise. By the time everyone else got up and rushed everywhere. Andre pulled up into the driveway, a knock on the door rings through the busy house making everyone go still.

" It's for me!" I say as I run opening up the brown maple door. Andre stands there with a big bouquet of roses in his hands, a smile on his face, and a slight of red on his cheeks.

" Morning..." he says as he hands me the bouquet, my hands come up to mu mouth covering my lips as my jaw drops.

" Oh, Andre... you shouldn't have... They're beautiful..." I curl my fingers around the bouquet. At last, I could release my past, let it float away into obscurity. Happiness flowed through me, warming my skin like the rays of an early summer sun. My customary cautious grin exploded into a radiant smile that I had never worn before, not even as a small girl. Everything was going to be alright now, I had Andre and he had me. We were a team. We had been since middle school and from today no-one could separate us, for better or worse. I would never fear the darkness again because I would never be alone. The wind ruffled my simple white dress and from inside the organ began to play. It was a perfect start, a perfect day and Andre was my perfect match. Sure he scored sometimes, he spoke with his mouthful often and he played computer games until his eyes were square, but for me, there would never be another. I lean up and kiss him.

" Just like you, my dear..." He kisses me again.

" Wow, okay let me put them in some water and let's go, okay?" I ask looking into his eyes, wanting to kiss him again. He nods and I go back into the kitchen and put them in some water in a crystal vase. I go back out to him, waiting at the door and we get in the car. Stopping at a red light our favorite song comes on the radio, he turns it up a bit as the light turns green. As we go I see a truck coming at us. The car rolled over, lights swirled like crazy catherine-wheels and the noise of the metal being bashed over the concrete was almost deafening.

At the last second, I jumped. My body hit the hood of the car and I screamed. My bones and muscles and joints and organs felt like they were being crumbled and smashed into a tiny box. My lungs contracted with such force that I was afraid they would fold into themselves. My torso and head smashed up against the windshield while my arms and legs were flailing, searching for somewhere to hold and stop the forward movement my body was going. The world must have kept flickering its figurative light switch because my vision kept flashing from bitter darkness to blinding white light. The only sound that filled my ears was the crushing of glass mixed with the distinct crackles of my bones. Then suddenly, everything became light. I was flying through the air, my broken body almost limp from the impact that occurred nanoseconds before.

The engine sputtered to life, a horrible coughing sound like that of a dying man. With a loud fart, a cloud of smoke blasted out from the exhaust pipe. My eyes watered and I coughed violently as it rolled over me. Everything starts to blur, just hearing the sounds of sirens.

Slowly I tried to get up but quickly realized how futile it was when I had to bite my lip to keep from crying out. A sharp pain lanced through my head and colorful spots flashed in front of my eyes, it felt like my whole body had been beaten and every movement caused some muscle or bone to ache. My clothes aren't right and I don't know this room. It looks like a hospital, a nice one too, but I couldn't focus on anything besides the pain, I tried to scream and yell but there was something around my neck, my throat was so sore, what happened?
