Loose Ends
"Thank you Linda, for sending us the journal. We really need it." You thanked Linda.
"No problem."
Linda tucks a loose golden-blonde strand behind her ear, and holds up her sketch. It's a group portrait of Matt, Mello, Near and you.
"Here, it's for you to keep." Linda carefully tears the paper out of her sketchbook and hands it over to you.
You hold on the paper, your thumb covering Linda's tiny signature on the left corner. Matt, Mello and Near crowds around you, wanting to get a better view of the portrait.
"It's weird to see how much you guys have changed over the years. Some changes are noticeable, while others are gradual, secretive." She held up a group portrait of younger Matt, Mello, Near and you.
You glance at the portrait of your younger selves, and look back at the portrait you're holding now. Mello changed the most. He was no longer the innocent-looking kid with ivory skin and a golden-blonde bob, clad in loose, black clothing. You glance at the portrait of Mello now. The sudden change hits you like an open-hand slap. Mello's now clad in tight, leather clothing, his once-neat hair is now a mess, but most of all, a jagged scar makes its way across his face. The Mello now looks more...ruthless.
Near's changes seems to be more...subtle. He still wears the same loose, white clothing, the same slate-grey eyes stare back at you from both portraits, and he still had the same short, curly, white hair. But he grew taller, his face is leaner and his shoulders have broadened a bit. New Near seems way easier to take in than new Mello.
And then there's Matt. Matt didn't change much, like Near, but he still had some few noticeable changes. He still wears the same striped shirt and goggles, but he now wears leather elbow-length gloves and occasionally a furry vest to top the look. Also, the Matt now, has a cigarette in hand. But the most prominent feature that still remained was his warm, genuine (but goofy) grin.
"I guess you're right, Linda. Even though we changed so much, we're still the same in some ways." Said Matt.
Linda only nods.
"I guess I have to go then, It's nice visiting you guys. We'll keep in contact." Linda pulls out her phone.
She added all of your numbers to her contacts. You all added her number in return.
"Oh yeah! I almost forgot!" Linda tosses a small, white, rectangle box at Matt.
Matt catches the box.
"What is this?" He asks.
"It's Watari's favorite tea. It's said to calm even the giddiest person. Oh, and the recipe's inside the box...somewhere if you want more of that stuff. Most of the stuff can be bought at the local grocery store."
"Oh, Thanks! It'll be helpful!" Matt thanked Linda.
You all waved back in unison.
"Bye Linda, I hope we'll meet again. Keep in touch!" You call out.
"Hopefully!" Said Linda as she leaves.
"I better be going as well. Rester's going to pick me up soon." Said Near, as he (adorably) hops off the chair.
"Bye Near!" You wave, with your tubed arm.
"Hope to see you soon." Matt waves as well.
You and Matt both glance at Mello.
"Bye...I guess." He mumbled.
"Bye Mello. Hopefully you'll find someone."
Matt snickers.
"Smarmy little bitch..." He mumbles.
A tiny smile makes its way across your face. Even though at times, their rivalry's tense, it's sometimes funny to watch them bicker, hearing their smart-ass comebacks, they're geniuses after all.
Near left, with a tiny wave, leaving you alone with Matt and Mello.
Matt and Mello both stayed by your side for a while longer, until the sun has completely set, and the moon shines brightly in the sky.
Mello yawns. "I guess it's time for us to go, (f/n). We'll visit tomorrow."
"I guess so. We should get going." Said Matt.
"Goodbye, (f/n)."
Matt pulls you closer, pressing his soft lips against yours, drawing you in for a long, but sweet kiss. The two of you eventually pulled back for air (damn you, oxygen).
"Goodbye, (f/n)." He softly spoke into your ear.
"Goodbye, Matt. I'll see you tomorrow." You whisper back.
"And goodbye, Mello. I'm sorry...." You say.
"Don't be, (f/n). Just your presence is enough for me, and I'll just find someone else."
Mello and Matt steps out of the ward, heading back to your shared apartment.
You slowly close your eyes, unwinding from the exhaustion of handling the amount of visitors for today.
You dream of a typical afternoon in Wammy's House.
"Sunlight filtered through the window, and poured into the spacious library, dyeing the room a warm, golden color. Matt, Mello, Near and you were sprawled across the soft, green carpeted floor, cramming bits of information from the math textbooks into your tiny brains, studying for an upcoming exam (well, Near was actually lying on his stomach, annoyingly flying his remote-controlled airplane in the air, circling and whizzing around the room in lazy circles. Near doesn't study at all, yet he's at the top of the class).
"How do you find the area of a circle?" You quizzed Matt.
Matt looks up from his textbook and Game-boy Color.
"Uhh..." He thought for a while.
"I don't remember."
"Pi times Radius Square!" Mello called out.
"Ugh, second-grade math is so hard!" Matt slammed his textbook shut in frustration.
"It's okay, Matt. I'm struggling as well." You comforted him.
"Well, not me! I'm going to ace this test and beat Near for once!" Mello stood up and proudly raised his study notes into the air.
Near did his little, half-smirk upon hearing Mello's comment. Although, you and Matt were the only ones who noticed it and didn't dare tell Mello.
Just then, the door swung open, and there stood a comforting sight, right at the doorway. It was L-of course. He stood, hunched with the same unruly, raven hair that stuck up in all directions. He wore the usual white, baggy Oxford long-sleeved shirt that hung in wrinkles and faded, blue jeans that ended at his bare feet.
"L!" You all exclaim at the same time, and rush over to give him a crushing hug.
Even Near stood up to acknowledge his presence.
You all eventually let go.
"Well, hello Matt, Mello, Near and my niece, (f/n)!" L greeted you and ruffled your short, (h/c) hair. You let out a bubbly giggle.
"So, what did you get us this time?" Mello asked, his bright, blue eyes brimming with excitement.
"Well, you'll find out." He said.
"Watari!" L called out.
A wealthy, old man, with silvered hair and an oak walking stick appeared beside L. He carried a faint scent of cigars and tea.
"I have plenty of gifts for you, my dear successors. Although, L originally requested for me to bring you sweets." Watari let out a hearty chuckle.
He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a Gameboy Color game.
"Here Matt. This is for you. Have you ever heard of the Japanese video game, Pokémon Red and Blue?"
Matt smiled and shook his head.
"Well, I'm sure you'll like it."
Watari then, pulled out a high-quality chocolate bar.
"Here, Mello. Swizz chocolate, pretty self-explanatory if you ask me."
Mello beamed and snatched the Chocolate away from his hands.
Watari then, pulled out five custom-made figuring's of Matt, Mello, Near, L and you.
He handed them over to Near.
"It's good to keep your friends close to you. There figuring's will remind you that they're always with you no matter what."
Near nodded and accepted the figures.
Watari then, pulled out a Manga book and hands it over to you.
"What is this?" You ask, and start reading it in the wrong direction.
"It's a Manga-a Japanese graphic novel. You read it from right to left, instead of the usual left to right. This book is part of a series called Black Butler. It vividly depicts the era of Victorian England. I'm sure you'll like it. I know you crave for satisfying stories to read, to listen to and to tell." He looked down at you and warmly smiled.
You grinned back.
"Thank you Watari." You thank him.
"Well, I have to talk to Roger for a moment, so I'm leaving you with L and his stories. Is that alright?" He asked.
"Yes." You all replied in unison.
Watari left the library to converse with Roger.
"L, do you have any stories to tell us?" You ask, your (e/c) eyes gleamed with curiosity.
"Well, yes I do."
L sits all of you down, in a circle around him, as he begins his story.
"Well, this story is about how I solved two cases simultaneously from both ends of the world. One it the well-known Los-Angeles BB Murder Cases, another is the abduction of a schoolgirl in Tokyo, Japan."
You leaned closer, intently listening to L, as he explains every event in such meticulous detail. His stories often took you away from the institution, to which ever place he has gone to. They inspired you to do better, to push yourself beyond the limits, as limits are always meant to be broken.
"And that was how I solved two separate cases at the same time..." L concluded.
The four of you were left sitting in awe, staring up at your mentor in such wonder that seven-year-old's carry."
