Chapter Twenty-Six
The envelope in perfect condition had fallen facedown. My eyes still on the train, checking that it would not try any funny business, I knelt down and snatched up said envelope. A train sticker too similar to Fright Train was keeping down the flap, which I admit was a neat touch. Where did Fright Train get this sticker from? I am sure that not one of the passengers or staff packed a book of train stickers before boarding the now haunted train. If Fright Train could explain answers, I would have asked if it took the cute sticker out of its engine or elsewhere.
I carefully ripped the small sticker off the middle of the envelope and lifted the flap. The envelope was light like that an envelope should be. I assumed that only a letter was hiding inside. I slipped in two fingers and revealed a folded piece of paper. I unfolded it and skimmed it. It was not a letter. It was a map. A detailed map of a large building's insides, a bold X located in the top corner. X marks the spot. A bold heading at the top read:
JULIAN'S MANSION.
Jackie's father? He is the only Julian whom my friends and I know about. Also, the only Julian whom we know is rich enough to own and live in a luxurious mansion.
What does Julian have to do with Fright Train? How in Fright Train's name did that train get ahold of a map of Julian's mansion? Why did it have it in the first place?
"Is there something in Julian's mansion that you would like or what?" I asked.
Fright Train blinked twice.
"I suppose that you want me to fetch it for you?"
Twice.
"Can you provide me with information on the item that only I can get instead of you using your powers to get it yourself?"
The window open a crack slowly lifted all the way up. A grey head belonging to a bald man poked out, gazing at me with a straight face. I would have preferred Marisa. I would have reached in the train, clutched her smooth hands, and pulled her out. But it would be useless. Her soul would want to stay because it was bound to Fright Train. Only when the curse dissipated would she break free. And the many other victims.
I did not recognize this old man sticking out his head. I could not make a guess if he died in the horrid crash or was lured inside. He resembled a zombie because of his charcoal skin. The train would likely talk through him.
The man's voice was scratchy. "Look in the envelope."
"I did."
"There is more."
I peered in the envelope. He was correct. How did I not hear the golden keys clattering together or feel them? I did not hide my questionable expression. "What do the keys unlock?"
"Head to Julian's mansion and unlock the front or back door. Then unlock the cabinet and empty it out."
"What is in the cabinet?"
"Want to be left alone and have that young lady named Marisa back in your life?"
I immediately answered, "Yes, yes. I will do anything to get back Marisa as long as I do not need to do anything reckless, like leaping into a lion's den."
"Go to the mansion and empty out the cabinet. Simple, Mike."
"What exactly does the train want?"
"You will see when you open the cabinet." The ill man's head disappeared back in the train. The window closed as smoke white like a ghost blew into the air. The small and large wheels started turning slowly. Then instantly moved incredibly fast. I watched in confusion and total dismay as Fright Train chugged down the vacant street and vanished in a snap in a thick fog.
I studied the map again. I murmured, "You want me to risk my freedom breaking into a rich man's mansion. If I am caught and thrown in jail, what will the train do?" I folded back up the map and crammed it back into the envelope. "It will regret entrusting itself in me."
"Mike?"
"...Marisa?" I turned around.
