Chapter 30
"I believe this is the last body," Kenny stated, dumping a humanoid shaped bag on the ground with several things that appeared to be personal belongings resting on top. The hell were personal belongings doing there anyway?
Levi and Erwin, who had somehow been dragged to help in the process of carrying out bones to an awaiting wagon parked outside, were relieved. Who knew so many people lay targets at the hands of the Ackerman's?
The two had offered to help carry the bones for the main reason being; Levi's marbled floor was beginning to get filthy with the reckless throwing Kenny kept doing each time he brought up a bag, destroying the cleanliness. The other three were instructed to stay on the other side of the house where they remained, happily going through the many things Levi had. Especially Mikasa, who even though knew the family history of the murders, preferred looking at her ancestors' artifacts.
It was kind of sad having so many heirlooms yet not knowing any of the details. Hell, some of those artifacts may have been hundreds upon hundreds of years old yet no one would know since there was no one to tell their story. Even Kenny, who was the oldest Ackerman still alive, was essentially useless with such things since they never piqued his interest.
"Why were there even so many down there?" Levi asked, stopping in front of the last bag. "Weren't all of the bodies always carried to some gravesite?"
"Yeah but according to your grandfather, he had to keep all the bodies of the people that had been claimed to have mysterious deaths so that the truth was never found."
Levi nodded, not really caring about the history of the deaths but more focused on the fact that they could finally start cleaning up the dust and bits of bones that trailed out the front door. Luckily, the other three were off elsewhere, preventing questions, specifically from Eren, and preventing more dirt from spreading.
Erwin leaned to pick up the bag, his eyes making their way to the personal items and unlike all the others that he had just thrown absentmindedly, those specific ones called his attention and what could he do but be a regular human with curiosity?
“This pocket book,” Erwin suddenly said, his eyebrows furrowing as he reached out to pick it up, Levi and Kenny both froze in place as he began flipping through the old and blood stained pages. That was not supposed to happen. Not like they knew what it was but the way he said it was more than enough to hint at what Levi feared the fucking most. “These names. Levi? Why is this here?”
“I wouldn't know,” Levi calmly replied, slowly walking over to Erwin to peer at the book. “I wouldn't even know why you're interested in that book.”
Erwin glanced at the shorter male, his mind racing as he tried to make sense of what was happening. Levi was trustworthy, wasn't he? I mean, he was a normal human but with a fucked up past and more than enough personal issues. He was essentially harmless.
“This was my Father’s book. It has his name and everything. But how would it end up here if he was found completely crushed in a mysterious accident?”
“Have you ever considered that that accident might have been staged?” Levi asked before he could actually think and hold himself, Kenny nearly knocking out his nephew. “I mean, it's not possible but I'm just saying.”
The three second silence was deafening and yet, it wasn't long enough. It was as if that short silence was what was holding everything together. Holding them together so that they wouldn't break into reality but all good things come to an end and this was no exception. The moment Erwin started speaking again, that was when they realized it wouldn't go back to normal.
“Are you telling me that your family killed my father? Is that why I found his pocket watch while hunting?” Erwin asked, pulling out the small device that still ticked away steadily as if mocking them that their time together would soon run out and an eruption would follow suit. “Tell me Levi, he wasn't killed in an accident, was he?”
Levi remained silent, their eyes meeting yet not seeing each other but past and seeing the confusion, guilt, and hurt that lurked beneath.
“I can't really say, Erwin,” Levi explained. “I was never told much but if this is what it amounts to, then I'd regretfully say yes.”
“So you knew?” Erwin asked in more of a statement, pain in his eyes as he slowly put space between them. “I told you my life story, I spent time with you, I thought I could trust you and yet you stared me in the face knowing full well that my Father's corpse lay in your basement. How does that make you feel to know your family killed one of my relatives? HOW DOES IT FEEL?!”
“Don't yell at Levi, Smith,” Kenny cut in, unable to bear the sight of his nephew being a target of years of pain and anger. “If anyone should be yelled at, its me. I'm the last remaining that did our families dirty work and there is no need to yell at Levi who was just a child when our entire family was killed.”
Erwin took a breath, staring down at the man he thought he truly liked and turned away from the skeleton that still lay on the ground between him and the two other men.
“I think I'll be heading home. I need to clear my mind,” Erwin said. “As for you! You'll be facing charges!”
A finger pointed at Kenny accusingly, Erwin’s face contorted with anger directed at the elder of the two Ackerman’s.
“The fuck?! Smith don't think you can't end up like your oh so precious father either.”
An intimidating step was taken by Erwin who approached Kenny with much bravado.
"Back up Smith," Kenny warned, reaching into his pocket to pull a rather small knife.
"And what'll you do? Kill me here in front of Levi? In the next room there's three people."
"And what about it?"
"Uncle," Levi tried, not wanting to see Erwin's life fade away before him. Fuck, he had just began to admit to himself that he liked Erwin mayhaps a bit too much.
"You stay out," Kenny barked at his nephew. "This matter is now between us two."
"YOU'RE IN MY HOUSE!"
"AND WHAT ABOUT IT?! DON'T FORGET THIS WAS MY HOUSE TOO BEFORE I LEFT IT TO YOU!"
"AS YOU SAID, YOU LEFT IT!"
"Just stay out."
Erwin didn't even glance between the two, his mind clouded by so much anger that the knife that glittered in the room didn't even matter.
"So what'll you do?" Erwin asked, almost in a taunting manner.
"What other choice do I have but this?" Kenny asked, his knife raised above faster than anyone could process, the blade being brought down full force and headed straight towards the meeting of Erwin's shoulder and throat.
"KENNY NO!" Levi yelled, his only reaction to throw himself between the weapon and the blond he had grown unbelievably fond of.
"LEVI!" Erwin yelled, his eyes widening and attempting to push the smaller. FUCK!
But everything happened too fast, everything happened in a blink and when the confusing colours died down, all that was seen was Levi laying on the floor, his blood steadily pooling around and rolling down his throat but the most horrifying sight.
The small knife that rested wedged between the very same place that was supposed to be stabbed into the blond.
