Chapter 11

The next morning, 7:00 a.m

"Wake up Alli!" Kennedy yells in my face.

"OMG! Driver's test!" I yell as I jump out of bed.

I run to go change and brush my long, brown waves and place it into a braid. I apply sunscreen to my pale, white skin. I need to look normal. I need to look like nothing has scarred me. As soon as I walk out, Kennedy runs to me.

"What's going on at home?" She asks.

"Why?" I ask in reply.

"It's not at all like my life. You wake up at four, cook dinner, come on!" Kennedy yells.

"I'll tell you later." I reply, my voice firm and confused at the same time.

We run to the driver's test.

"Alli!" Susan and Ellie yell.

"Hey, guys!" I yell.

"What's up?" Kennedy asks.

"We're going to rock this thing!" Ellie yells.

Susan hands me Starbucks frappechino.

"How did you know?" I ask.

"It's my favorite, too." Susan replies with a laugh.

I laugh along with her. I see Joe, waving at me. I run up to him.

I whisper, "How did you get here?"

"Mother's old car." He replies with a smile, "I also worked for the money."

I smile as the rest of the group runs up to him.

"Who is this?" Kennedy asks.

"I'm Joe." He replies.

"Your boyfriend?" Ellie asks.

"No!" I yell, "He's a good friend of mine."

Susan whispered, "I understand. I have one of those, too."

Cristian Kartaham, Susannah's sister, appeared. Kennedy ran up to him and missed his cheek. Ellie's boyfriend, Thomas Sullivan, appeared as well. Ellie kissed him on the lips softly. I see another boy, Susan's good friend, Jonathan Stewart.

"Hey, Jonathan!" I yell.

Jonathan walks over to us.

"Who might that be?" He asks, gesturing to Joe.

"I'm Joe." Joe replies with a genuine smile.

"I'm Jonathan." He replies.

They shake hands.

"Four people up, Kennedy Smith, Eleanor Anderson, Susan Nguen, Thomas Sullivan." The lady who runs the test yelled.

They hopped into tester cars. Cristian looks at me as Joe pats my back.

"Good luck." Joe mumbles.

"You, too." I reply, looking up into his eyes.

"Next four people, Jonathan Stewart, Allison Mitchell, Joseph Edwards, Cristian Kartaham." The lady yelled.

I ran to the lady who ran the test. She looked at all of us.

"I want to know all of you." She says, "I want you to say your name and age."

She pointed at me.

"I'm Alli and I'm fifteen." I say.

The lady gestures to Joe.

Joe says, "I'm Joe, and I'm fifteen."

The lady gestures at Cristian.

"I'm Cristian, and I am sixteen." Cristian says.

Jonathan says, "I'm Jon, and I'm sixteen."

The lady nods.

"Alli, get in the silver Avalon." The lady orders.

Another lady walks to the car.

"You ready?" She asks.

I nod nervously. I place my hands on the wheel. I turn off my phone, so that doesn't distract me. I press the engine button and begin driving.

"Parallel park." The lady orders.

I nod, then parallel park on a random street. The lady makes a mark on her paper.

"Go on a highway." The lady orders.

I stare nervously into the mirror to make sure no one is behind me. I take a deep breath, then drive onto the highway. I use my directional signals to maneuver my way around the streets in order to get to the highway. When the driver's test is finally over, the lady tells me to stand in front of a white screen. I smile into the camera. A flash went off.

"Why would she want my picture?" I ask myself.

I smile anyway. The lady hands me a card with my picture and other important stuff on it.

"What is this thing?" I ask.

"Your driver's license." She replies.

"You mean I passed?" I ask with excitement shown in my expression.

"Yes." The lady replies with a genuine smile.
