chapter two
"Who the hell is your fiance?" Irtaza asked Maaz with rage-filled eyes as he threw a punch on his nose, knocking him back a little.
An infuriated Maaz stood straight and punched Irtaza back with just as much energy, "how dare you?" He seethed. And both of them continued throwing punches violently.
Sumayya gulped realising both these men were fighting over her. How did she end up in this two rupees fairy tale story?
Seeing how they were not stopping the fight, she decided to step in.
"Irtaza! Stop punching him." Sumayya's eyes widened as she came in between them but got punched on her jaws instead. A yelp escaped her lips as she winced in pain. Both the men stopped throwing punches and eyed her with shock and surprise.
"Are you crazy, Sumayya? Who comes in between fights like that?" Irtaza dragged her little figure with ease and made her sit on the sofa. Her eyes were stuck on his worried face with utter disbelief. The worry laced in his eyes for her was not something she is very much familiar with.
Was he really worried about her?
Sumayya Mirza. Her of all people?
"Sumi, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you." Maaz came forward to touch her face but Irtaza glared at him and he knew better than to make another move. She glanced between the two of them, they were both in pain and yet her pain was the most they were concerned with.
"Is it hurting?" She flinched when Irtaza merely touched her jaw. He backed off with the same worry-filled eyes. It was filled with anger a moment ago, but as soon as he eyed her it turned soft and warm. She couldn't believe the sight in front of her.
Was he really Irtaza Riaz?
The same cousin who wouldn't stop annoying her.
"Sumayya Mirza. You drive me insane." Irtaza muttered with a shake of his head as he glanced at her bewildered face. He sat across her on his knees whilst trying to examine her. She couldn't believe he actually cared about her. It was so new to her.
"Sumi! I'm sorry really. I didn't think you'd come between us like that," Maaz began again, which snapped her out of the daze. For a while, she was almost lost in that dreamy hazel brown eyes. The one which she has sworn to hate but she wasn't sure about that anymore.
"Why is he calling you, Sumi? Who gave him that right?" Irtaza seethed in anger as he touched her jawline again. She didn't flinch this time. Her eyes lingered on his face while he was burning with rage. She felt goosebumps all over her hands as he remained in the same position. His hands stayed still on her jaw. She was enjoying this care way too much for her liking.
What's up with his enmity with Maaz anyway?
"I'm asking you something. Why is he calling you Sumi?" Irtaza asked again. She glanced at him and then at Maaz, who looked irritated by what she assumed was due to her closeness with some other guy.
"Get off her. You're suffocating her." Maaz said again.
Irtaza looked like he was going to pounce on him but that didn't seem to affect Maaz. Sumayya didn't want another high school drama to happen again.
"Maaz, sir. I mean. Maaz. I'm fine, really." He visibly relaxed at her words.
"But answer me something. When did I become your fiance?" She couldn't believe her ears indeed. It was as much shock for her as it was for Irtaza.
How can he just decide that she's his fiance without even asking her?
She officially didn't like Maaz Khan anymore.
"I thought you liked me. The last time we spoke, I asked you to marry me. And you said you need time. Was two months enough space for you?" Maaz's words stopped in the middle as another hard punch was landed on his face.
"Irtaza! Stop!" Her cousin glared at her now.
"Bro, what the hell is your problem? Stop hitting me." He snapped at Irtaza while Sumayya was still processing what he said. Yet she couldn't remember where she has accepted to be his fiance.
"So when did I become a fiance in all this?" She questioned him angrily as she stood up, feeling annoyed that he thinks so mighty of himself. She absolutely hates it when someone decides things for her.
Irtaza glared at them both. She could feel his fury from where she stood. She couldn't understand why he cares so much.
"You liked me. So eventually we were going to be my fiance and then my wife. So I don't see what's the problem here." Maaz replied nonchalantly. She was beginning to question her taste in men. What did she see in this guy anyway?
"I never said yes to any of those things. So I'm not your fiance Mr Maaz nor will I ever be." Her tone was firm and clear as she noticed his face pale in confusion and anger. Like he couldn't believe she had just rejected his announcement of being his fiance.
"You heard her. Now get out of here before I call the security." Irtaza growled furiously making her heart skip a few beats. She couldn't comprehend what is to be expected anymore.
Maaz frowned at her and then at her cousin, "who are you to her anyway?"
That seem to be a trigger point for Irtaza as he gave a dirty look to her ex-boss in return.
"None of your business. Just get out of here." Irtaza gave him a push while Maaz eyed her with a different kind of look. It was filled with pure hatred and vengeance. It was the result of all the humiliation and her rejection.
Sumayya felt terrified at that moment. In all her life, she could bet this one was the most dramatic of all as she watched Maaz leave her house.
"Can you tell me who the hell he is to you?" Irtaza nearly lunged himself towards her and grasped her hands, bringing her close to him. Her breathing became uneven and her heartbeats rose frantically as she felt his angry breath fanning over her face.
Sumayya looked into his hazel brown eyes which were staring down at her with fury and anticipation. She felt hot all of a sudden.
"I don't know how I am explainable to you." Her answer seem to irritate him more as he pulled her closer to him, twisting her hands.
"Stop testing my patience, Sumayya."
"You're h-hurting me."
He left her almost immediately but was still furious nevertheless.
Their eyes locked at that moment.
His dreamy hazel brown against her boring grey eyes.
There were so much unspoken words. But their eyes seem to communicate on their own.
"What is happening here?" The intimidating voice of Sohaib broke their trance. Sumayya jumped in shock, suddenly feeling nervous about what will happen next. She surely knows it's not going to be good.
She was actually surprised to find her father back home at this hour. He was supposed to be at work. Everyone in their family was supposed to be at work. Even her mother works in some NGO. It was just her, who stays at home all the time after she graduated college.
As her brother Aadil walked downstairs, it started making sense to her. So that's where he went. To call their father.
"Papa. I-" Sumayya trembled in fear as her brother gave her a gentle squeeze to her hands, giving her moral support. She sure has messed things up with this Maaz matter and it is going to cost her the trust of their family.
"So Maaz is real, huh?" Sohaib asked almost in disbelief.
"He was my boss. I did my internship under him. I swear I never talked to him in the last two months after the internship was over. I just had a little crush on him and apparently, he did too." She gazed at her shoes feeling the heated glares on her.
"And why am I hearing this only now? You didn't tell all this at the breakfast today." Her father questioned her furiously.
"I was honestly not interested in him. It was just a crush. And he straight away proposed to me on my last day. I asked him for some time and that was the last time I spoke with him. I swear."
"But you said you loved Maaz at the breakfast."
She couldn't meet Irtaza's eyes at that moment.
"You all knew it was a lie, papa. No one took me seriously anyway. I just wanted to use something to escape this marriage talk from Irtaza. I didn't want to marry him.
I lied about Maaz hoping you all will stop pressuring me to marry Irtaza." Her voice was barely a whisper.
Sumayya never thought her one stupid lie was going to cause all this chaos.
Her father and brother were giving her looks of disappointment. She got that all the time but this time it hurt so bad.
"So you're telling me, you'd rather marry that buffoon than me?" Irtaza's furious yet hurt filled voice made her feel worse.
"I don't like you." His face was visibly hurt as she uttered those words.
"You never gave me any reason for liking you enough to get married to you, Irtaza." Even if it hurt, she was going to be brutally honest today. But why did her heart clench in pain as she gazed at his broken face?
It wasn't like he loved her or something. There was no way.
An uncomfortable silence remained after her little confession.
"Maamu. I'm not marrying your daughter. I don't like her very much either." Irtaza announced looking directly into her eyes. For the first time in forever, she saw something close to hatred in them.
And that broke her heart a little for some unknown reason.
"Get back to your room, Sumayya." Her father's cold voice took her off guard. She glanced at the three men before walking back to her room. It was so overwhelming all of a sudden.
A lone tear escaped her eyes and that surprised her if anything.
Why the hell was she crying?
Why did Irtaza's broken eyes affect her so damn much?
Sumayya was so confused and angry.
The next few days were spent mostly in her bedroom as her family gave her the cold shoulder. They all were disappointed that Irtaza broke off the engagement. And that she hid about Maaz's proposal. And so she was receiving the classic silent treatment from her whole family.
Shahveer and Shehryaar were literal fans of Irtaza and Aadil was his best friend.
All of her family was team Irtaza. He has them all cast under a spell.
She didn't realise they were engaged to begin with. It got her so mad. Why were people deciding things for her that involves her without her consent?
But the look of hurt which Irtaza gave her before she walked away that day. It haunted her till this day.
It made her feel something. Something which she wasn't sure how to describe.
It was another boring morning where Sumayya lay on her bed lazily, feeling quite hopeless.
All the silent treatment was starting to get on her nerves.
Her phone pinged, bringing her out of the daze.
Irtaza: Just messaging you to let you know that I'm engaged now. With a girl who loves me.
Sumayya sat up straight as she read his message. Out of everything, she didn't expect to receive this type of text so early in the morning.
Her heartbeats rose frantically as she reread his text. The emphasis on the word love did something to her heart.
Irtaza: Isn't she gorgeous?
He has attached a picture of a girl. And of course, that woman was gorgeous. So damn gorgeous. Why does it bother her so badly?
Sumayya: Good for you. Congratulations.
She typed bitterly not wanting to be rude. She already felt bad for hurting him so much with her words.
Feeling quite angry, she deleted that girl's photo and threw her phone on the bed.
Engaged with a girl who loves him.
Why does that news make her so mad?
She had no right to be. But yet Sumayya couldn't help herself.
