Chapter 10

The group stirred awake. They started to notice the changes made. They were alone, clearly separated from the others. They were also sprawled out on cold stone floors, different from the muddy forest soil where they collapsed in. Everyone but Hero could see they were in a tiny room, the only way of escape through a door in front of them.

Hero was still on the floor of his room, blank eyes wide as he tried to calm himself down. He felt around blindly with his hands, and pushed himself to his feet after using a wall as a support. Hands dipping into his pockets and pistol sheath, he found that all his weapons were gone. He was defenseless, blind, and alone.

Ty woke with a start, and even though the room was warm, he could not stretch his wings. His wings were trapped uncomfortably, scraping against the rough walls of his room. His huge tail was piled around his feet, and soon he was tangled in a mess of leathery wings and a spiny tail. His claws scratched desperately at the door, trying to get it open. He was distressed, and let out a roar to prove it.

Jason's room was pitch black. It took him lots of feeling around to recognize where he was. His room had been cold, and Jason was a little grateful for that. Still, the size of the room added to his slight claustrophobia. It worsened when the ribcage bones had seemed to tighten even more around his torso. Silent, he just leaned back and waited.

Mitch's room could be on fire. It had been cold, and Mitch woke up shivering. He breathed a bit of fire to warm the room up, and it helped. The fire could not rest on the stone, so Mitch had to create a little fireball to heat him up and give him light. His hybrid form settled in involuntarily. Smoke slowly filled the tight room, and the soldier reluctantly breathed it in, his adapted hybrid lungs gratefully taking it in. The rods surrounding him scraped against the wall, creating sparks. He just wanted to get out of there.

Seto's room was obnoxiously bright. When he opened his eyes, he yelled and shielded them immediately from the purple light blaring into his eyes. He kept his hood on, eyes still slammed shut. He had slowly got up, but temporarily blinded and afraid to see, Seto just stood there, impatient and waiting.

Sky's room was dimly lit, but the smallest. He woke up to find himself propped up against a wall, his boots touching the door. He got up, and every wall hugged some part of his body. His ridiculous height did not help as his head bumped against the ceiling. He banged at the door, seeing red once it did not budge. He snarled and tried to lean back, and kick it open. He just ended with an aching foot, and groaned while waiting for something to happen.

Nabiel knew it started as soon as he collapsed. It had happened when he was doing his morning wing stretches. He was flying in his resting plane, dipping and swerving, wind blowing against his face as he dove to the ground with his wings tucked against him. He had pulled up before he hit the ground, wings spreading wide and flapping to swerve up. He was preparing for another dive before he fell unconscious, and tumbled to the ground, wings like broken limbs flapping behind him.

He woke in a slightly big room. His wingspan was impressive for angels like him, so unfortunately he could not spread his wings. He had them folded uncomfortably behind his back. The flight feathers were crooked, but he could not reach back and fix them. His tail thumped against the walls, somewhat anticipating something. Nabiel discovered that his powers had disappeared, as he tried to teleport out of the room. He could not even flap. Realizing that he could not do anything else, he sighed.

Lady Minecraftia's trial had begun.

-

Everyone, even Nabiel, who was forbidden to talk to the rest, had raised their heads when a booming voice filled their rooms.

"Welcome to the West! Clearly, you have not listened to the signs at the walls telling you not to venture too close."

Pissed, Hero snapped at the voice, "I put them there. Didn't stop me."

The rest of the group had been surprised to hear Hero's voice. Wanting to try something out, Seto asked shyly, "Is everyone alright?"

Everyone heard Seto's voice too, and they answered back. They could communicate. The voice unfortunately returned, with a more angrier tone, "Hey! It's rude to interrupt. Don't you want to get out of here? Everyone else does."

Everyone went silent. The voice hummed before cheerily continuing, "Alright! Like I was saying, you made a huge mistake stepping into the holiest and purest part of Minecraftia you can ever find. Your-"

Ty scoffed, "The 'purest' and 'holiest' part of Minecraftia spews corpse after corpse. Have a load of that bullshit."

The voice growled before starting again, "Your nasty and filthy presence will be tainting the West, which is something we do not want. However, I've been given strict instructions on how to take care of intruders, as the supposed guardian of the West."

Everyone shifted uncomfortably in their rooms. The guardian spoke again, "We do not kill-on-sight. Only you low-class civilians do such filth."

Hero, not liking his superiority complex getting stomped on, huffed. Everyone else heard it. Nabiel did the same thing, but since he was cut from the rest, no one had heard him. The guardian continued, "We have had this practice placed ever since the first intruder stepped in years ago. In your younger years, perhaps, Mr. Persson."

Hero huffed again. The guardian chuckled and said, "You see, we put intruders through a series of tasks. Each task is tailored to fit each intruders' fear. We are humbly forcing you to face your fears. Isn't that lovely of us?"

Everyone made a sound of frustration, be it a grumble or Ty's snarl. The guardian ignored them and spoke, "We're doing you all a favor, really. Now, some of us unfortunately have more fears than others. We shall release you altogether, after all your tasks have ended. If some of you get stuck or die, too bad. However, looking at you lot now, I don't really think any of you would get out of here."

The guardian's voice went low, "Only two out of thousands have survived. You'll just add on to the statistic. Now, we won't cut there right away, we have something prepared for all of you."

The doors swung open on their own. Everyone but Hero stepped out to investigate, or to spread their limbs in relief. Hero had to feel around cautiously before getting out. Nabiel and Ty were both freely stretching their wings and giving little testing flaps, eager to move. Everyone found themselves in a narrow hallway of stone, before it cut off with massive hedges leading to god knows where. For some, it cut into a different direction, for others, it goes in multiple directions.

Separating the hallway and the hedges, was a thin sliding glass door. Hero still had no idea what was going on. He was frozen on the spot. The guardian spoke, "Ahead of you, is a maze. All of you will be released into said maze, and the chances of you bumping into one another are slim to none. However, I will be giving you tips if any of you are taking too long. Think of this as a warm-up."

The voice giggled, before speaking, "Now, your objective is to find the flowers that best represent your group members. They are not necessarily your house flowers. Once you find all your peers' flowers, you will proceed to the next room."

In Nabiel's hallway, a different message was being relayed to him. The shadow cooed, "The others may not find your flower, and you don't need to find yours. It doesn't exist, basically. Find the other flowers and you shall proceed to your resting room. Good luck."

The shadow spoke to everyone, "In your hallway, you will find a list of your friends' flowers. There will be pictures to help you out."

Before Hero could address his problem, Seto called out with a growl, "Hero can't see."

The guardian went silent before muttering, "Fine, fine, I'll be his personal assistant. I'm doing you a favor, okay, little guy? You owe me one."

Hero spat from his hallway, "I owe you nothing."

After the guardian has finished reading Hero the list, it even provided scents for Hero to extinguish them apart. The others just groaned at how Ty's and Seto's flowers look similar. Soon, the doors ahead swung open and the group was released into the maze. Hero had something nudging his back to lead him along.

Ty had immediately spread his wings to fly ahead, as there was no roof, but he immediately regretted it. His body seemed to collide with an invisible barrier, and excruciating pain filled his body. He spasmed and hissed, and the others stopped their movements when they heard their group member in agony. Nabiel himself had been trying to fly, his wings itching to relieve themselves. He settled down when he heard Ty.

When the enderdragon fell back down in a heap of twitching and burning leather smell. Everyone stilled again when they heard the guardian giggle sadistically.

"The West doesn't tolerate cheating."
