The others have noticed that I favor Subject J over them. He gets larger rations at dinner, and I do my best to be more gentle when speaking to him. They don’t ask why, unlike what I expected. I am both grateful and perplexed by this. Subject R-O and R-E are still in isolation, and I can already see the effect it’s having on them. They long for the others, but long for each other more. Twins, inseparable, they need each other to survive. The other subjects have asked about the state of Subject R-O and R-E, and I say what is necessary to placate them.
