Flying

"Honey!" my dad shouted from the barn, "Can you feed the horses please?"

"Yeah sure." I replied, "As soon as I've done my homework."

"Thanks hon."

I would much of preferred to go and feed the horses. They were so majestic and graceful and just amazing creatures on general, so long as you didn't get on the wrong side of them. Then they could be mean and violent. But I never let that happen. I would never let that happen, would I? I realized I was starting to get distracted again. I tried to focus on my math. 837 + 85 x 43 - 187 = X. I sighed. X = what? Math has never been one of my strong subjects but I wish it was. I wish I could just pass all my tests easily like the smart kids did, but no. I was bad at math. Why did school have to be so... so hard. Sure, not all subjects are hard like recess, and lunch and PE. Ok ok, I know they're not technically subjects but whatever. Could't they add fun activities like horse riding or something like that? I realized I was getting distracted again. I decided to get my workbook and take it to the woods where nothing would distract me. Hopefully.

I walked to my tree. A big old oak tree that was easy to climb, not that I needed it to be though. The view from up the top was incredible. You could see my whole family's farm and far, far more. The horses looked like tiny boats in the middle of a vast ocean. I especially loved going up there at dawn or dusk. The color of the sky was magnificent then.

I was almost done with my math. I only had one page left and then I would be free to go. I have a test coming up next week so I really had to study.

I was just about to head back when I saw a flicker of movement out of the corner of my eye. I waited a minute or two but I saw nothing out of the ordinary. It must have been a squirrel or a bird or something. I continued walking down the path back to my farm. As I reached the lake that sat at the border of our land  I saw a magnificent white stallion. I gasped and took a step back. It radiated power, I could feel it and see it. An aura of light was surrounding it. As I regained my senses I slowly walked toward the graceful beast. I knew never to approach a wild horse from the back, so I walked towards it where I was in plain view. It neighed as I got closer so I took a step back so as not to scare it.

It was definately not one of my family's horses. We didn't have any big white ones like this. I started to approach it again. I was in arm's reach of it now. I pondered whether or not to stroke it, but decided not to. Too late. The stallion was now affectionately rubbing it's head against my hand. It's mane was as soft as silk. To my suprise it had little flecks of gold here and there on it's shiny white coat. Suddenly I remembered that I had to go and feed the other horses. I really wanted to stay here now. Couldn't those horses wait a little longer? I thought to myself, no, they can't.

"I'll come back to you." I said to the horse as I ran down the path back to my house. Little did I know I would see her - yes it was a she, don't ask me how I know I just do - much sooner than I would have liked.

It was a Friday night, our family movie night. We had just watched a horror movie, much to my disgust, and it was time to head up to bed. I read under my covers for a little while. No, I wasn't really allowed to read at night but it was such a good book. I had just put it down and decided to get some sleep, when I heard a noise outside my window. It sounded like a horse. One of our horses must have escaped somehow. I went to check the window so I could go and tell dad which one it was. I got a bit of a shock when I poked my head out. Standing just below my window was the horse, the beautiful white stallion that I had come across earlier in the day.

"What are you doing here?" I whispered to it, " You can't be here!"

It neighed back at me.

"I don't speak horse for your information, I prefer English but French is ok too, Parlez-vous français ou juste cheval?" I sighed in exasperation. Horses should defenetly learn to speak English. It would be so cool to communicate with them instead of just talking to them and thinking they understand when they really just want to be fed.

I pondered weather to go back to sleep and try and ignore the horse; or not. I decided I would sneak out of the house via my window and try and bring the horse back into the woods.

Climbing out of the window was harder than I though but I managed all right. I patted the horse on the back. I feel bad calling the horse, well, horse. I should probably give it a name.

"What should I call you?" I whispered, so as not to wake up my brothers and dad, "What about Midnight? Nah, that's way to popular and you're not exactly dark are you?"

As if in agreement she nodded her head up and down.

"What about Betti? No no, I just remembered that's our cows name. What about Starlight? Nope. Snowy? No. Heaven? Nah."  I took another look at the horse. It had a silky bleached white mane and a shiny white coat with flecks of gold here and there. I knew it wasn't always good to look into a horses' eyes but I could usually tell when it was ok. I gasped in astonishment. Its eyes were normal apart from the fact that its irises were PURE VIOLET!

"You're more than meets the eye aren't you?" I said in a soft voice, "I have two ideas in mind for what to name you ok? The first one is Violet, right, and the second is Twilight. What do you think?"

As I said 'Twilight' it neighed and nodded its head. "I take it you like Twilight best!" I said excitedly, "Com'n then Twilight lets bring you back to the woods."

Before heading off again I put my forehead to Twilights. "Do you mind if I ride you?" I asked it, "Curse these horses for not speaking English!" I said half joking half not. I decided to try and get on its back. It was a bit tricky since she was so big, but I managed.

Twilight was unlike any horse I had ever ridden. It felt as if we were just gliding along not even touching the ground. She ran so smoothly you could't feel any bumps at all. I closed my eyes and held on to her neck. She was so warm and soft. I could have fallen asleep apart from the fact that there was a strong cold breeze in my face. A strong cold breeze in my face, I thought to myself. Suddenly it dawned on me that we weren't actually touching the ground but gliding along like I had previously imagined. I shut my eyes tightly and then opened them. I slowly and cautiosly looked down. I felt like the breath had been sucked from my lungs. We were flying high above my farm, over the woods and the lake. I spun around, careful not to loose my balance. Two wings sprouted from Twilights mane. They were a magnificent goldy color and at least 4 meters in diameter. Twilight really was more than meets the eye. She was a pegasus. I screamed at the top of my lungs, not because of fear, but because of joy. I had never felt happier. I patted Twilight on the head, "Good girl Twilight, good girl," I said loudly so she could hear me above the wind, even if she didn't understand, "lets go down now ok girl? It's getting late."

Suddenly Twi (yes Twi was her nickname, Twilight was too long to say sometimes...) lurched to the left causing me to loose my balance and fall to the right leaving me dangling 300 feet in the air holding on to Twilights underside. I screamed because of fear this time, not because of joy.

Calm down, I though to myself, calm down. It's ok you're only dangling 300 freaking feat in the air. I'm gonna get out of this. I have no freaking clue how but I'm gonna. Just stop freaking out. That's all I have to do. Stop. Freaking. Out.

I started carefully swinging my body backwards and forwards with my arms still wrapped around Twis' underside. Just don't look down and you won't dye; Hopefully. I though to myself cheerfully, not.

I swung back, and forth, and back, and forth, until I got high enough too swing one of my legs back on top of Twis' back. My leg slipped just as I though I had regained control, forcing me to try again. My dad would not be happy if he found my distorted body lying dead on the ground after falling to my death. I started panicking again. I looked down and we where right on top of my house. Of course 300 damn feet on top of my house.

This time, when I swung my legs over, I made it. I held on for dear life as Twilight finally decided to land, in the middle of the lake, for the matter. I wondered what time it was. My dad and brothers must be tucked up in bed, not soaking wet like me.

"Some ride Twilight." I said as I stroked her mane, "I think I better go back to bed now, after a shower preferably." I tied Twi to a tree near the lake and a small heap of hay I had brought out. "Good night Twilight." I said as I ran down the path back to my house.

I'll have a hell of a story to tell at school on Monday, I thought to myself grinning, even though I knew none of the other seventh graders would believe me.
