Prologue
Stalking, Melissa thought, normal people would call what we’re doing stalking, but let’s just stay positive about this.
She turned her head to the right and gazed intently into her binoculars only to find her best friend’s eye and part of her face blocking the view of the park’s landscape. “Lacey,” she muttered. “Move out of the way. What if we miss him?”
Without a word, the feisty girl tore the binoculars out of Melissa’s hands, sticking her tongue out playfully while she dangled the device just out of her reach. “My turn,” she stated simply and then lowered her eyes into the binoculars. “Is he here yet?”
“No,” she murmured, and when she realized spying on him from afar was the best part of their Sundays, she cried to herself internally. How sad their life had turned out to be!
On the other side of her, Sarah was occupied with drawing her name on the dirt with a branch she had picked up off the ground. “Remind me again why we do this?” She chastised, her voice filled with the woe of an ancient philosopher despite her dumb blonde appearance.
“Because he’s hot,” Lacey snapped.
“Well then, we should just walk up and talk to him! You know, like normal people? I mean, we’re strong, intelligent, attractive, young women aren’t we? You think we’d be able to just walk up to him and start a conversation.”
Lowering the binoculars, Lacey’s catlike brown eyes peered over Melissa to where Sarah was squatted behind the bushes and leered at her. “Fine,” she said. “Then you do it.”
“What?!”
“I said you do it,” Lacey repeated. “When he comes by with his dog, go up and talk to him.”
At once, Sarah puffed her cheeks and made a small farting sound as she deflated them. “Why me?” She hissed.
“Because!” Lacey cried. “You said you wanted to talk to him!”
“No I didn’t!”
“Because,” Melissa added, with pride in her voice and a small fist pump to boot, “you’re a strong, intelligent, attractive, young woman.”
“Well… ” Sarah’s cheeks blew up once more. “That I am… ”
Melissa giggled at her best friend’s effort to hide her mortification, but was interrupted by a brash hiss from Lacey. “Shh! Two o’clock! There he is!” Melissa’s eyes quickly darted toward the indicated direction and felt her stomach do an Olympic winning backflip when her eyes landed on him – codename: Mr. Gorgeous.
All three of them tilted their heads to the left and swooned at his blatant beauty. Tall, with a lean muscular physique and dark brown hair spiked just slightly at the front to his personal liking, Mr. Gorgeous was the perfect combination of hot and cute with just a touch of gentleness to suit. He was playful, adored animals of all sizes, but it was the brilliance of his smile that really caused Melissa’s heart to flutter and feel like the stuff of cotton and clouds.
Every Sunday afternoon, he would walk his German Shepherd through Centre Park and the two of them would always take the same path, playing with a Frisbee or some kind of ball. Today, it was a chewed up tennis ball, and one throw sent the magnificent beast darting off with its long, pink tongue slapping against its own face. When the beast returned, it dropped the wet ball right in between Mr. Gorgeous’ shoes, who laughed and went down on one knee before ruffling the dog’s glossy coat.
“Aww… “ They cooed and then all three heads tilted to the right.
With a mischievous smirk that infected her full lips all the way to the color in her eyes, Lacey suddenly snuck behind Sarah and pushed the girl with all her might. Sarah went flying, stumbling out of the bushes where the three of them were hiding, looking confused and all over the place. Angrily, she shot Lacey a look which – though she tried – didn’t look the slightest bit threatening.
Go, Lacey mouthed, and with a snarl, Sarah fixed her tousled blonde hair and lifted her chin up high. Mr. Gorgeous wasn’t that far off and she paced herself as she took long, valiant strides toward him.
“Look at her shake her bum,” Lacey muttered, “that slut.”
Melissa let out a chuckle, but then quickly covered her mouth as if afraid someone would overhear her. “Leave her alone Lacey. I can’t believe you’re actually forcing her to do this.” Her eyes glanced over at Sarah before a soft sigh escaped in the same direction. “I can’t imagine what she’s going to say to him. I hope she introduces us.”
“Yeah right!” Lacey snorted, turning to Melissa with a devious smile. “She’s not going to do it.” Holding up three fingers before slowly folding over the first, she counted, “three… two… one… ”
At ‘one,’ Sarah released a huge shriek and turned back, giggling and screaming her head off. “I can’t do it,” she cried. “I’m too chicken to talk to him!”
Lacey quickly grabbed her and pulled her back into the bushes, covering her mouth to silence her as Melissa pressed a finger against her own lips. “Shh… ” She hissed. “What if he heard us? He’ll think we’re total creeps.”
“As if we’re not,” Lacey snorted. “We’re totally creeps.”
“I’m happy you guys know,” Sarah mumbled, and then all three poked their heads just slightly over the edge of the bushes to see if he was still there. Except, what they found there wasn’t a gorgeous boy in his early twenties playing catch with his dog, but a thirty-year old man dressed in a very recognizable uniform that looked strikingly like… a cop.
“A-hem,” he grunted, clearing his throat and taking a good look at all three of them. “May I ask just what you ladies are up to?”
Melissa was the first to shoot up. “It’s– It’s not what you think officer,” she quickly stammered. Her hands busily dusted the leaves and specks of dirt off her pants before she straightened up so much that her back could be used as a ruler. She gave him a nervous smile, playing with a curl of her brown hair in between two fingers. Never had her body shaken with so much fear.
“Well then what is it?” The officer pressed. “Did you guys know I got reports about suspicious activity revolving… ” He peeked down at his notepad. “…terrorists inside the park? Now maybe a bunch of elderly folks were exaggerating, but what in the world are you guys doing dressed up like the Charlie’s Angels?”
Melissa’s cheeks instantly reddened as she glanced at their matching outfits, a thin turtleneck and skintight, vinyl pants – all black. Add the big binoculars in Lacey’s hand – the three of them had ‘suspicious’ written all over them.
Sarah and Lacey on the other hand stood up leisurely, batting their eyelashes at the poor, already skeptic police officer. “You don’t like my outfit Mr. Policeman?” Sarah cooed. “What would you rather I wear then? Maybe you?”
“Duh, we’re man-hunting,” Lacey muttered bluntly. “And might I add yum, aren’t you the delicious looking thang. So what do you say? You. Us. Lets go break a couple of laws together.”
That was when the officer stepped up to Sarah, took her wrist in his hand and handcuffed it. Immediately, Lacey’s face darkened fifty shades, but Sarah only released a giggle of delight as he handcuffed her. “Ooh… ” She purred. “Handcuffs. We’ve got a kinky one here.”
Melissa just dropped her face in her hands and wished she could vanish. This was not going to come out well.
