Chapter Nine
Roike stood next to the large and rather fancy looking SUV that the Order contact had told him to pick up. He wasn't quite sure about it but he figured if they were going to extract Agent Anders without tipping the locals off and getting her killed, that secrecy and subterfuge were necessary. He looked around at the rather dark area and found a heavy shuddering rolling down his back. He wasn't exactly sure if it was the situation about a town trying to resurrect the old traditions or the thoughts of the secrecy that weirded him out but he did his best to push it all away.
He shoved his hands into his suit pants pockets. The clothing and ID package had arrived to his door mid-day with the instructions that he was going to wear the clothes and keep the ID close. His name on the rather convincing IDs was Everly Moore from Grenwich, a rather notable clan that had ties to the aristocracy as servants and workers. He has spent most of the day looking the IDs and clothing over to try and figure out how they were able to make such a convincing fakes before it had been time to leave.
"You could have been here earlier. Moon, daddy is going to be hearing about this." At the rather snobbish, petulant, and snapped out words Roike turned his head and there was his Order contact, dressed in what looked to be designer clothing with a rather expensive looking suitcase next to her heeled feet. She snapped her fingers at him and pointed to the luggage on the ground. "Hello? Let's go." She nudged the suitcase with her foot before she lifted her chin up and nearly pranced towards the SUV.
Roike had no clue what to do other than stare at her like she had lost her mind. "My lady..." He drew it out and she let out a heavy scoff as she stopped by the back door of the SUV.
"Let's go! Moon, you are dense. Good help is so hard to find. I'm having daddy dock your pay if I'm late!" At the hissed out petulance, his eye narrowed slightly before he reached over and opened the back door. He was still utterly confused but her aristocratic bearing and her attitude had him deferring to her like he knew most werewolves would.
She climbed into the back seat and he closed the door after her before moving over to her suitcase and picking it up. He put it into the back hatch before he got into the driver's seat and closed the door. "What the fuck was that?" He looked into the rear view mirror and the contact was looking intently over a tablet. She held out a hand with a card in it and he took it with confusion.
He looked it over and it was an ID that had her picture on it. Meridia MacKuloch. The name had him raising an eyebrow. The MacKuloch's were a well known snobbish clan that was barely aristocratic and tended to over compensate for their lack of royal blood by scheming and causing more trouble than they were worth.
"The SUV has been set to a timer to have one of the hose clamps fail outside of Sleepy Burrow. It's a quick and easy fix when it is found but will give us enough of a reason to linger in the town for the day." She said it shortly as she tapped on the tablet. "We will have a sorcerer scrying for the asset's location but I will need all the details you can give me so we can get an accurate locate on her." She shifted on her seat, pulling on her seat belt. "I suggest you start driving." She didn't look at him and Roike's eyes narrowed slightly as he put on his own seatbelt.
"Where is your team? You can't be the only one that is being sent." He looked around through the windshield but no one else materialized. She was the only one. That didn't sit right with him. Not at all.
"Of course not." She snapped it out. "My team has already been sent out with their orders. I'm to control the WC contact."
He resisted the urge to growl at the thought of being handled, granted she was a remarkably attractive one but still. "Well can I know their IDs so I know who to watch for?"
"No. You're acting as Everly Moore, a driver slash babysitter to an aristocratic brat who is trying to get to a nearby villa to visit with her 'favourite' cousin she is going to stab in the back later for a leg up in the hierarchy." She held out her hand and he stared at it before handing her ID back over. "You don't need to know who my team is, you don't need to know their covers. I can't trust you not to give anything away to the locals with shitty acting skills." He was a little agitated he wasn't being trusted with that information. That and he was feeling like he was being treated as incompetent.
It didn't seem like the most sound plan. Keep everyone separate and have no way of getting them help if something were to go wrong. He was a WC agent, he wasn't exactly someone you needed to worry about in the field. "What if something happen-"
"Then my team and the asset will be extracted and you get to know what they look like when they pass the asset off into your capable WC hands." She finally glanced up to look at him, her amber eyes glowing in the dark of the SUV. "We have planned for all possible contingencies, Agent. We live and breathe these situations every day. Don't insult me or my team by thinking you could do something here better than we can." Her eyes narrowed as she looked at him. "I'm Meridia MacKuloch and you are my driver. Our SUV will break down just outside of Sleepy Burrow and we are just going there to get it fixed so I can get to the nearby villa an hour east of Sleepy Burrow to visit with my favourite cousin. That's all you need to know at the moment, so let's go." She looked back to her tablet and waved him off.
Roike ground his teeth but turned on the SUV and pulled it off onto the highway. The GPS came up on the display and alerted him to what route he needed to take. He was a little angry that she thought he was that incompetent. He has spent ten years as an agent with the WC. He had trained extensively through all their courses, he was nearly one of the most decorated agents they had. There was a reason he was selected to go after Agent Anders.
He wasn't some dipshit who couldn't hold his cover and would blow the entire mission.

Nalah wanted to roll her eyes slightly. She could practically feel his agitation rolling off of him. She did her best to ignore it as she sent rapid fire updates to her team and HQ. She needed to get Cyrus scrying for the asset as soon as she possibly could. Time was not on their side and she honestly really didn't have the want nor the inclination to smooth over a hurt ego.
However she could practically hear him gritting his teeth. "Listen. I'm sure you are a great agent." She said it carefully as she set her tablet on her lap. "But that is my team in the hot seat. You and I aren't taking any risk here. We are acting as distraction and extraction for the asset. We make our arrival memorable and we make it irritating because it draws attention away from my team's arrival and then we leave to get to the extraction point." She clasped her hands together and watched as his shoulder muscles bunched and then relaxed, twitching underneath his well pressed button up shirt.
"My team knows what they are doing. I'm not risking them with what ifs. We have done extractions like this thousands of times. They won't need our help. By all means when it comes time to take down the town and the cult, you can be right in the thick of it, throwing yourself around." It irritated Nalah a little bit that she was having to state it at all. He should have just accepted it and left it be. Normally she would have just let him stew but he really was her fucking type and didn't that just irritate the hell out of her? "But when it comes to the safety of my team, I do not cut corners, nor do I allow anything that will put them at risk. Telling you anything about their covers or who they are, puts them at risk."
She met his gaze in the rear view mirror. "Get it?" He gave a curt nod and she was aware of his jaw ticking. "Good." He picked up her tablet, turning the screen back on and going to Cyrus' encrypted messaging window. "Now tell me about Agent Anders."
There was a bit of silence before he shifted in his seat and then marginally relaxed. "Full name is Margita Anders, she's five foot six, dark hair, mouthy, with a hammer like personality that views every problem like a nail." As he said it she typed it into the message window, immediately uploading the info to Cyrus. "I didn't know her personally, we didn't interact. She's a mid-level agent and I'm upper tier. However I have since learned she is rash and takes a lot of risk that can get her into trouble if she isn't careful." He adjusted his grip on the steering wheel "She is intelligent, wouldn't be a mid-level WC agent if she wasn't, and got relatively high marks on all of her testing. I do believe she has brown eyes and several tattoos, not sure what of, just that in her file it says she has them."
"She weighs between a hundred and fifty to a hundred and seventy pounds. She's got a lean but strong build from what I could see from her photos. The Anders clan doesn't have much of a presence so I don't know the logistics of it but she is definitely not aristocratic." He fell silent again before he shifted in his seat. "I'm running out of things to say, I didn't know her well. Do you need anything else?" He glanced into the rear view mirror and Nalah shook her head as she finished typing the rest of the information into the tablet.
Can't get an exact location but the asset in this two mile area on the south facing slope of Barrow's Mountain. Can definitely tell there is a cabin involved and it's close to water. So that should narrow it down further.
The reply came across the screen along with a topographical map showing the location he had marked and Nalah felt a small smirk tug up the corner of her mouth. "Thank you, magic." She typed it in and received a selfie of Cyrus' face holding up his middle finger. It disappeared quickly and she backed out of the messaging channel, quickly sending the map and info Cyrus gave to the team. They would use it to make a plan of action before they even arrived. She set her tablet off to the side as she shut it down. "I do believe we will have the asset in our possession before day breaks the day after tomorrow."
"I believe you." The words rumbled out of him and Nalah relaxed into the seat, picking at the expensive bracelet she had thrown on.
She extended her hand and looked at her nails as she crossed her legs, "Everly, you would be a fool not to."
