Epiphany

The Dharmic–a religion with focus on nonviolence and personal effort to elevate the reincarnating soul towards Freedom by liberating it from the World– found its way into Nigeria.

Members sent to the north were massacred, heads severed from bodies, and the ones sent to the west were arrested and starved to death.

In the east, however, they managed to plant a foot and had ran for four weeks without any disruption.

Today they had a new member, and  knew you were late. Not more than seven people sat around on plastic chairs.
You pulled out a free chair and sat. Some members turned and gave a nod of acceptance, serious, as though it was a sin to be anything than serious as the Bald man with protruding stomach, standing, was about to speak.

"He is a Catholic," the Bald Man said, his gaze vague, "A Jain, a Hindu, an Atheist, a Baptist, a Jew and Buddhist. And, he knows he shouldn't kill. My name is Amadi Maraizu, and I'm a retired solider." There was a long pause, but they were all patient. He continued somberly, "I killed a few people, and I only did that because I was in the military and at the front. It was either shoot or be shot. I don't think it was right, I have realized there is more to life. Thank you."

The next girl by his side stood up. "As a kid, aging to a teenager, I had a heart as free as a butterfly, but my first boyfriend caught it and perforated its wings. My name is Tomi Stephanie, in return, I cultivated a relationship with another man, took him to the alter and ran away at the last minute, I felt I was licenced to hurt a man-any man- for revenge. I regret what I did. Thank you."

From the way their gaze averted to you, you noticed it was your turn to speak. You cleared your throat before standing. You started like this, "Have you ever asked yourself why there is corruption, and rich men that lie to the detriment of lower people?"

They probably thought you were being rhetoric because they gazed patiently. So you made it known that you wanted to converse by directing the question to the man you thought to be their leader, it was obvious, he sat in the middle.

"Mr, on your ad you said Freedom from the World. What does it mean?" I asked, somberly too, not to spoil the tension.

The man cleared his throat, his voice sounded hoarse, robbed by shouting. "Freedom from ignorance; self-realization, self-actualization and self-knowledge."

"I just want to know if in your religion a man can marry more than two wives, and make love to minors, I would go to Islam, but, I prefer not, I am a Christian, but the church is becoming too materialistic. I am ready to live a virtuous, proper, and moral life, I just want to know if I am free to have more than one wife in your religion and you know..." As you say it, you realize that the only eyes free of judgement, is that of a child.
