-Chapter 2-
The sun hung low in the sky, casting long, sharp shadows across our backyard. My heart was still racing from everything that had happened, but as I looked up at the enormous figure before me, my thoughts tangled into a mess. Optimus Prime-an alien robot who had somehow appeared out of nowhere-stood before me, towering like something out of a science fiction movie.
I had never felt so small in my life.
Luke, on the other hand, practically vibrated with excitement. His eyes were wide, his face beaming with that characteristic joy I hadn't seen in a while. How could he not be terrified? This was no dream, no movie. This was real.
Optimus's deep, resonant voice broke through my thoughts, its tone calming yet weighty. "My name is Optimus Prime. I am an autonomous robotic organism from the planet Cybertron." The way he said "Cybertron" made it feel like it was a place of great importance, but it only raised more questions in my mind.
I hesitated, still reeling from the impossibility of the situation. "Uh... and you're...?"
Luke, without hesitation, jumped in, his excitement bubbling over. "I'm Luke! Luke Patail! And this is my big sister!" He gestured toward me with wide arms, his voice practically shaking with joy.
I shot him a look of disapproval but didn't speak. I was still trying to process everything.
Optimus's head tilted slightly, his optics locking on me with a soft, curious look. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Luke Patail," he said, before turning his attention to me. "And what is your name?"
I swallowed hard, unsure how to respond. "Catherine Patail... but you can call me Cat," I stammered, my fingers fidgeting nervously. I glanced at Luke, whose face was still lit up with wonder, but I couldn't shake the feeling of unease that settled deep in my chest.
"Well, Catherine and Luke Patail," Optimus continued, his voice suddenly turning grave, "I regret to inform you that I must ask you to come with me. There is much more at stake here than you can understand. This war-between my kind, the Autobots, and the Decepticons-has been raging for eons. The Decepticons will stop at nothing to destroy this world. I must take you to a safer location."
My stomach tightened. "Wait," I cut in, stepping back slightly. "What do you mean, war? And what do you mean 'take us'? You just showed up here, and now you're asking us to leave?"
Optimus let out a low, mechanical sigh, shifting slightly as if weighing how to explain. "The war between the Autobots and Decepticons is much bigger than you could possibly comprehend at this moment. But I assure you, the danger is very real. Earth, as you know it, is now caught in the crossfire. We've been here, fighting in the shadows, protecting your world for years. But now, the threat has escalated. We need to move you to safety, far from the danger that's coming."
I felt my chest tighten. "What do you mean, danger?" I asked, my voice shaky, though I stood firm. "What's going to happen? And why us?"
"The Decepticons will stop at nothing to destroy everything you hold dear," Optimus explained, his tone darkening. "They will come for you, for your family, and for every human on this planet if we do not act. You are no longer safe here."
I glanced over at Luke, who, to my surprise, wasn't just listening but seemed to be processing everything. His wide-eyed innocence gave way to a cautious seriousness I hadn't expected. My mind was still spinning. Too many unknowns. Too many questions with no answers.
I shook my head, still unsure. "I don't understand. We don't even know you."
Optimus's optics softened, and his voice grew quieter, more empathetic. "I understand your hesitation, Cat. But you must trust me. The Decepticons have infiltrated Earth in ways you cannot even begin to imagine. Time is running out. The war is upon you all, and if we do not act swiftly, it may be too late."
Before I could respond, I heard a familiar voice calling from the back door of the house, followed by the faint sound of wheels rolling along the pavement.
"What in the world-"
I froze. Mum. She was standing in the doorway, her eyes wide in disbelief as she stared at Optimus, unable to make sense of the scene unfolding before her. Her hand flew to her mouth in shock, and for a moment, she just stood there, frozen in place.
Mum's gaze shifted between Optimus and me, then to Luke, her confusion quickly morphing into something deeper: fear.
"What... is this? What's going on?"
I felt my heart skip. This was it. The moment everything would change. I couldn't process it fast enough, but I knew Mum needed to be brought in. She had to understand what was happening.
Luke, ever the optimist, stepped forward eagerly. "Mum! This is Optimus Prime!" he said, his voice full of excitement. "Optimus, this is our Mum, Kathy Patail!"
I swallowed the lump in my throat, still struggling to find the words. "Optimus is... well... he's an alien robot, and he's here to protect us. There's a big war happening, and we have to go with him to a safe place. Apparently." My voice was still filled with doubt, but I pushed on.
Mum's expression flickered, disbelief warring with the reality of what I'd just said. She took a cautious roll forward in her wheelchair, still shaking her head. "What?" she managed, her voice barely above a whisper. "An alien robot? Catherine, are you serious?"
Optimus, sensing her distress, turned to her slowly, his movements deliberate but not threatening. He lowered himself slightly, towering above us, his voice surprisingly soft. "Greetings, Kathy Patail," he said gently. "I apologize for the shock, but I need to take you and your children to safety. The war we are fighting is larger than you can comprehend. You must come with me."
Mum's eyes widened, and her hand instinctively moved to grip the doorframe, her knuckles white. "No," she whispered, shaking her head. "I'm not going anywhere. What kind of joke is this? A robot? You expect me to just go with you?"
Optimus's voice softened even more, a hint of understanding in his tone. "I do not wish to alarm you, Kathy Patail, but the world is changing. The Decepticons are coming. They will destroy everything in their path unless we stop them. I am offering you protection."
I could see Mum's mind racing, her thoughts darting between disbelief and something else: the realization that maybe this wasn't a prank. This wasn't a nightmare. This was real.
"I-I don't know..." Mum trailed off, her voice unsteady. "I can't just leave everything behind. What if-"
"You will be safe," Optimus assured her, his voice calm but unwavering. "I will explain everything once we reach a secure location. Please trust me."
A long silence stretched between us. I could see the uncertainty in Mum's eyes, the deep conflict pulling at her. But the longer she stared at Optimus, the more the weight of the situation seemed to settle on her shoulders.
Finally, she let out a sigh, her voice filled with reluctant acceptance. "Alright," she said softly, her words heavy. "Alright, we'll go. But you better explain everything along the way, Optimus."
Optimus nodded solemnly. "I will, Kathy Patail. You have my word."
And just like that, we were bound for the unknown.
"Your legs... can't you walk?" Optimus's voice broke through my thoughts as he gently addressed Mum, his tone genuinely concerned.
Mum sighed, the weight of the question sinking in. I could see a flash of hidden pain in her eyes, something that had been there for years but was still raw. "No, I cannot," she said, her voice steady but tinged with the truth. "My spine was damaged badly in a car accident. I can't walk for the rest of my life."
Optimus nodded, understanding the weight of her words. "We can help her in. Her chair folds up too," Luke offered with surprising confidence.
I nodded in agreement. "We'll manage," I said softly, the shock still reverberating through me.
"Shall we leave then?" Optimus suggested.
And with that, we found ourselves in the passenger seat of a large, flame-decaled Western Star truck, the one that hid Optimus Prime's true form, driving into the unknown. I was still in a daze. I had to pinch myself a couple of times to convince myself this wasn't some crazy dream.
First, we discovered an alien race.
Second, we're being taken away by an alien robot.
Third... that alien robot can transform into a truck!
The drive seemed to take forever. I kept my gaze fixed on the road ahead, but nothing seemed real anymore. How had everything shifted so quickly?
I must've dozed off because the next thing I knew, Luke was gently shaking me awake. "Sis, we're here."
I rubbed my eyes and blinked, staring out the window. My breath caught in my throat. We had arrived at a sprawling military base. The area was filled with soldiers in full tactical gear, moving quickly and with purpose. Some of them glanced over as we pulled in, their eyes widening at the sight of Optimus.
"This is unreal," I whispered to myself, trying to make sense of the scene unfolding before me.
Luke, however, seemed unfazed. "This is so cool! Did you see that Camaro over there? It has the same symbol. That's gotta be another Autobot, right?"
I shot him a look, but my gaze was quickly drawn back to the two military men approaching us, their boots crunching against the gravel.
Optimus, now transformed back into his towering robot form, stood tall beside us. The soldiers, clearly used to strange sights, looked on with a mix of awe and skepticism.
One soldier stepped forward. He was tall with short-cropped brown hair, his uniform neat, and his eyes sharp with authority.
"This is Captain William Lennox," Optimus said, his tone calm but serious. "He'll explain everything once we're inside."
Captain Lennox-Will, as he insisted we call him-gave us a sharp, calculating look, his demeanor commanding and intense. "Alright," he said with a voice that carried weight, "You're here now. But there's a lot you need to understand. This is a top-secret military installation. It's not a tourist spot. Stay close, and keep your heads down."
I could feel the intensity of his gaze as it landed on me. His eyes held the kind of authority that made me feel like I was under a microscope. There was a subtle softness in the way he spoke to me, though-like he was trying to protect us, not just from the Decepticons, but from everything else as well.
William's tone softened slightly when he spoke to me, though I could tell it was still laced with command. "Catherine, I need you to stay with us and keep an eye on your brother. Don't let him wander off, alright? There's a lot going on, and it's not safe for civilians, especially with the kind of threats we're dealing with."
I didn't know how to respond. Part of me wanted to protest, but the seriousness in his voice made me swallow my objections. Instead, I nodded, though I felt a little irritated that I was being treated like a child.
"Understood," I said, my voice more steady than I felt.
Luke, ever the brave one, stayed close to me, his eyes wide as he took in the scene. "This is unreal," he muttered under his breath.
Will led us toward the entrance of a large building that stood at the center of the base. Inside, it was a stark contrast to the warm, comfortable home I had left behind. The air was thick with the scent of machinery and metal, and the walls were lined with monitors and blinking lights.
Everywhere I looked, soldiers were moving with purpose, communicating over comms, and ensuring everything was in order. There was no time for hesitation. Everyone here had a job to do, and it was clear that their lives depended on the efficiency of their work.
The word *Decepticon* from before hung in my mind, and the silence following it was thick with uncertainty. My mind raced, trying to grasp what it all meant. "You mentioned... these Decepticons before?" I asked weakly once I gained the courage, my voice barely above a whisper.
Will gave me a look that seemed part amusement, part pity. As if he knew my life had just changed, and not for the better. "You're in for a wild ride, kid," he admitted before turning to Optimus.
Optimus, walking tall and imposing behind us, shifted his weight and gave me a solemn look. His voice, though deep and resonant, held an unusual softness when he spoke again. "Decepticons are our enemies. They come from Cybertron, like us, but their ideals are... different. They seek to enslave your planet for their own purposes."
"Great," I muttered sarcastically, under my breath, still struggling to process everything.
Luke, ever the eager one, wasn't quite as cautious. "So, are they like, evil robots?" he asked, half-innocently, half-curious.
Optimus's glowing blue eyes softened, perhaps recognizing the innocence in my younger brother's voice. "In a sense, yes. Their leader, Megatron, is the embodiment of tyranny. He will stop at nothing to destroy humanity if it serves his cause."
Mum wheeled herself forward, her face pale but composed, seemingly taking everything in stride. "Why are you so stressed for our safety? I mean... we know nothing. It was only coincidence."
Her question struck me as well. Why had Optimus stressed our safety, of all people? We were just ordinary humans-people with no connection to intergalactic war or alien robots. It was just chance we witnessed a fight.
Optimus didn't seem to agree. He looked directly at Mum, his voice lowering in explanation. "Because of who I was fighting-Megatron. The leader of the Decepticons. He has a warped mind, and seeing your children there with me... I..." Optimus seemed to trail off, his gaze distant. He changed the topic quickly. "My Autobots will protect you, but we need to work together to ensure this."
I shivered at the mention of survival. Even with Optimus explaining things, it still didn't feel real. The towering mechanical creature. The idea of a war between alien robots. I thought maybe I was dreaming.
Will, breaking the heavy silence, clapped his hands together. "Alright, enough with the heavy talk for now. We'll show you around, meet the new team, and then I'll have a word with Optimus about keeping you safe." His tone lightened, but his eyes flicked nervously to Epps, who, as usual, was trying to keep a smile on his face to ease the tension.
"Yeah, yeah," Epps muttered. "Will's just trying to sound like a tough guy. Don't mind him."
Will shot Epps a pointed look. "Shut up, Epps." He cleared his throat, and his gaze returned to us. "We're heading inside to the Autobot Hangar. Follow us, and stay close."
"Do you think it's a good idea, taking them in like this?" Epps whispered to Will as we walked behind them, but I listened carefully while pretending to be oblivious. "They could get witness protection instead."
Will shook his head, his face serious for a moment. "I'm not sure, Robert. But we don't have much choice, do we? They're in danger, and whether we like it or not, we need to plan something for their safety. And Optimus seems adamant it involves having Guardians."
"I still don't get it," I mumbled, mostly to myself, but Luke overheard as he walked next to me, steering Mum in her chair.
"You mean the robots or the soldiers?" Luke asked, a grin forming on his face. His once eager curiosity had been replaced by nervousness. "Because I don't get either of them, honestly."
"Yeah, me neither," I murmured. "I just want to go home, but this-this is way bigger than any of us."
"Alrighty! Who's ready to meet the rest of the Autobots?" Epps clapped his hands in excitement, making Luke perk up while I shared a grimace with Mum.
I was so out of my depth.
