A girl who had studied greys anatomy throughout med school like it was the bible, a woman who had seen first hand how relationships ruin and stunt growth in this profession. She knew it with every passing where their bodies would brush against each other, or when he'd request her on almost every patient, or even when he asked her if she wanted to go for a drink one night—

BUT ALAS, the young(er)  doctor with an  appetite for men older mixed with just one too many failed half-assed relationships with men her age who didn't know what they wanted, including her. Instead of saying no, she said

' sure, one drink won't hurt '

ONE DRINK, which led to two. which led to more, which led to the poorly hidden flush of her skin when Jack Abbott had reached out and pushed hair behind her ear. A meaningless gesture leading to a heart thumping, throat drying kiss on the sidewalk as she waited for her cab home. which led to the unbreakable cycle—

that always ended with her in the sheets of her resident's bed the next morning.

A CYCLE, that started with secret brushes of skin that held more weight than before. The subtle buzz of watching him stand by the on call room , long enough for her to notice but not long enough for anyone else to. Coming back to the spare key no longer under her mat but instead atop the table of

the newly occupied left side of her bed

A CYCLE, that ended on a rooftop. With a flushed faced woman watching as the man she was ready to devout herself to instead told her that he 'wasn't ever going to ready for anything serious', that he wasn't ready for another relationship after his divorce. It ended with the woman telling him ' she wasn't ever going to be somebody's secret', a woman telling him that she wasn't going to 'wait around waiting for him to be ready', with an uncertainty, hoping he'd change his mind. Too much hope placed in the small part of optimism that the medical field hadn't drained from her. It ended as he placed his hand on her shoulder, whispering a 'I'm sorry marles' before leaving her up there.

it ended with Dr Marlene Langdon switching back to the day shift, three months ago.
