CHAPTER TWELVE

Nyx is laying in Dean's bed with the twins next to her. She's finally starting to drift off to sleep when the brothers start bickering again.

"Dude, you mind not eating those in my bed?" Sam asks, annoyed with his older brother.

"No, I don't mind." Dean says, and Nyx opens one eye when Alex starts moving. He quickly settles back down and goes back to sleep.

Everly starts fussing, and Nyx moves her hand up. The baby's little fingers curl around her index finger and she grips it as she settles again.

"How's the research goin'?" Dean asks Sam.

"You know how it's going?" He slams a book shut. "Slow. You know how it would go a heck of a lot faster? If I had my computer."

Nyx sighs and looks at the twins again. Both seem calm enough, but that could change in an instant if the bickering jackasses don't shut the hell up.

"Can you turn that down please?" Sam asks.

"Yeah, absolutely." Dean turns the radio up, and Nyx pulls out of Everly's grip and gets up faster than either of the boys can blink.

She quickly shuts off the radio, and then grabs the front of Dean's t-shirt. "I swear to God, if you two wake up the twins again, I will kill you both." She says as he looks up at her.

"You're cute when you're mad." He says, and her brown eyes move from his green ones to his lips. It's been a few — very long — months since the last time she was this close to him.

Nyx's jaw tightens and she swallows the lump in her throat as she stands up straight. "Then I must be adorable, because you two are seriously pissing me off." She tells him.

"You know, uh— You know what, maybe you should just go somewhere for a while." Sam says, talking to Dean.

"Hey, I'd love to. That's a great idea." Dean says. "Unfortunately, my car's all screwed to hell."

"Shut up." Nyx hisses and then goes over to the door. She opens it before Bobby even has the chance to knock.

"Hey, kid." He says as he lowers his hand.

"Hi. Sorry, but the twins are asleep, and I'm about to kill Dumb and Dumber." She says as she steps out of his way. "Come on in."

"Hey, boys." He greets, and Nyx looks back at them as Dean's putting a pillow where Nyx was laying beside Everly.

"Hey, Bobby." Dean says with a smile.

"It's good to see you again so soon." He says. "And it's good to see you too, Nyx." He looks at her, and she smiles.

"Thanks for coming." She says.

"Thank God you're here." Dean says as he shakes Bobby's hand.

"So, these are the little ones." Bobby says as he looks at the sleeping infants.

"Alex and Everly."

"Cute." He nods. "So, um... What didn't you wanna talk to me about on the phone?" He asks as he looks at Sam, seeing as he's the one who called him.

"It's this job we're working. We..." Sam laughs a little. "We weren't sure you'd believe us."

"I don't." Nycole says.

She hasn't been working this case. After what happened with her siblings, and with the twins being there, she's pretty much just been staying in the motel room.

"Well, I can believe a lot." Bobby tells them.

"No, yeah, yeah, I know. It's just we— We've never seen anything like it." Sam tells him.

"Not even close." Dean adds.

"And we thought we could use some fresh eyes."

"Well, why don't we begin at the beginning?" Bobby asks, and then looks at Nyx. "May I?"

The brunette nods as he motions to the foot of the bed the twins are on. "Yeah, you should be fine there." She tells him.

He sits on the edge of the bed, while Dean and Nyx sit on Sam's bed, and Sam sits on a chair that he pulls over toward them.

"Um, alright, so... It all started when we caught wind of an obit." Sam says. "See, a professor took a nose dive from a fourth-story window, only there's a campus legend that the building's haunted. So, we pretexted as reporters from the local paper."

Sam starts telling a story about how he heard about this legend. He was talking to two students in a bar. They say that a girl was having an affair with a professor thirty years ago and when he tried to break it off, she killed herself by jumping from room 669.

He then goes on to talk to his brother who's drinking at the bar. He's taking shots of some weird purple crap and he wasn't alone. He had some blonde chick with him named Starla. She apparently almost threw up, but managed not to.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa." Dean interrupt his brother's story. "Hold on a minute."

"What?" Sam questions as Nyx gets up to make the twins' bottles because it's almost time for them to eat. They'll be waking up soon.

"Come on, dude. That's not how it happened." He argues.

"No? So, you never drank a Purple Nurple?"

"Yeah, maybe that, but... I don't say things like feisty little wildcat. And her name wasn't Starla." His voice is getting louder.

"You wake those babies before their bottles are ready, and you're a dead man, Dean Winchester." Nyx tells him.

"Then what was her name?" Sam asks.

"I don't know, but she was a classy chick." Dean says, lowering his voice a bit. "She was a grad student — Anthropology and Folklore. We were talking about local ghost stories."

In Dean's version, the girl is flirting with him, and he's being totally professional. And Sam is apparently gay, according to his brother.

"Right." Sam says, obviously annoyed. "And that's how it really happened."

Dean shrugs.

"I don't sound like that, Dean."

"That's what you sound like to me." He tells his younger brother.

"I don't know who's story is true, but either way, Mommy's gonna kill Daddy for drinking at a bar while I was cleaning spit-up." Nyx says as she picks up Everly. She, unsurprisingly, woke up before Alex.

"Don't tell her that." Dean says, and Nyx glances at him.

"And he thinks you have the slightest clue what I just said." She says, and Everly watches her as she sucks on the bottle.

"Okay," Bobby looks up at Nyx. "What's going on with those two?" He asks.

"They want me to kill them." She says, and Dean nudges her leg with his foot.

"Nothing. It's nothing." Sam says.

"Come on, you're bickering like an old married couple." Bobby says.

"No, see, married couples can get divorced." Dean says. "Me and him? We're like, uh, Siamese twins."

"It's conjoined twins." Sam corrects.

"See what I mean." He says as he walks toward the kitchen.

"Hey, uh, kitten, come get one of your kids." Nyx says, and Dean walks back over to her.

"Look, it... We've just been on the road for too long, tight quarters, all that." Sam says, talking to Bobby.

"Come here, Princess." Dean says as he takes Everly out of Nyx's arms.

She starts flailing her arms around and her hand slaps Dean's cheek. Nyx starts laughing as she looks at her daughter.

"I couldn't have said it better myself, sweetheart." She kisses her cheek and then suddenly backs away from them, her jaw tight and her eyes closed.

"You alright?" Dean asks, and she nods.

"Mhm." She takes a second longer and then goes to get Alex's bottle because he's starting to fuss on the bed.

"So, anyway, we figured it might be a haunting, so we went to check out the scene of the crime." Sam continues the story, knowing that Nyx wants the subject changed and the attention taken away from her.

They got the janitor to let them into the professor's office. Sam was talking to him while Dean was stuffing his face with whatever candies the professor had out before he went out the window and died.

"Come on." Dean cuts his brother off. "I had one, maybe two."

"Just let me tell it, okay?" Sam insists and then continues once again.

Apparently, the professor didn't go up to his office alone the night he took the nose dive. He had a young, pretty girl with him, and she wasn't the first one that he'd brought up to his office. Sam also clarified on the number of floors the building has. Four. Meaning there would be no room 669 there.

They went back to the motel, and Nyx was asleep. She had Everly beside her, and Alex was asleep on her chest. Dean took a picture of the three of them, which he refuses to show her.

Anyway, this is where the beginning of their bickering started. Sam opened up his laptop and found it frozen on some porn site.

"But did you dig up anything about the building or on the suicidal co-ed?" Bobby asks, not wanting to hear about their fight.

"No, history's clean." Sam tells him.

The twins are now fed and changed, and Nyx is with them on the floor. Dean put out a blanket, and Alex keeps pushing himself up, sorta like a push-up. It's adorable.

"Then it's not a haunting." Bobby says.

"Maybe not." Dean says. "Tell you the truth, we're not really sure."

"What do you mean, you're not sure?"

"Well, it's weird." Sam tells him.

"What's weird?" He questions.

"Bobby's not gonna like this one, huh, little man?" Nyx asks, and Alex smiles at her as he starts giggling. The twins like it whenever anyone talks to them.

"This next part, we, uh..." Dean starts. "We didn't see it happen ourselves, exactly, but... It's pretty friggin' weird, even for us."

Dean tells him that one of the college students Sam had been talking to about the ghost story was abducted by aliens. Nyx starts laughing as she leans against the couch and sets Everly on her thighs. Nyx's knees are bent, and the baby has her index fingers clutched in her tiny fists.

"Aliens?" Bobby questions as Sam picks up Alex from the blanket on the floor.

"Yeah." Dean nods.

"Aliens?"

"Yeah."

"Mommy said Bobby wouldn't like it, didn't she?" Nyx asks as she lightly bounces Everly.

"Look, even if they are real, they're sure as hell not coming to Earth and swipin' people." Bobby says.

"Hey, believe me. We know." Dean says.

"My whole life, I've never found evidence of an honest-to-God abduction. It's all just cranks and pranks."

"Yeah, that's what we thought." Sam says, he's holding Alex so he can look out the window. "But...we figured we'd at least talk to the guy."

They went to talk to the frat boy in a bar, and he was drinking. The guy said he blacked out and woke up on a UFO, where they did tests on him and probed him...repeatedly. And after that, the alien made him slow dance.

"You guys are exaggerating again?" Bobby asks them.

"No." They say in unison.

Dean now has Alex and he's sitting on the couch next to where Nyx is. She hasn't moved from her place on the floor, and Everly's smiling as her mom lightly rocks her on her legs.

"Then this frat boy's just nuts." Bobby says.

"Ow!" Nyx yelps as a small hand grabs her hair and starts pulling. Dean laughs at his son's actions, and she elbows his shin.

"Ow!"

"Tell him the next part, you jerk." She says as Dean gets her hair away from their son.
