CHAPTER SEVEN

"Hey." Dean catches Nyx's hand, and she looks up at him. They're standing in the motel parking lot after their date. "It's still early enough. Why don't I go pick up a movie, and we can watch it with the twins?"

She smiles. "I think that's a great idea." She stretches up to kiss him, and he smiles.

"I'll be back soon." He tells her, and she nods.

"I'll try to get the terrors into their pajamas."

"You shouldn't call them that." He says, and she shrugs.

"It's called the terrible twos." She smirks.

"You're mean."

"You love it."

"Mm." He kisses her again. "Won't deny that one." He says, and she laughs. "I'll be back."

"Okay." She smiles, and he gets back into the Impala before leaving the motel.

"Well, isn't that just adorable." A female voice gets Nyx's attention, and she turns around to see a woman standing a few feet away from her.

"Can I help you?" Nyx asks, confused, but then she gets this overwhelming feeling of danger, and her jaw tightens. "Elena..."

"I've heard about those powers." She says as her eyes turn completely black.

The demon moves at Nycole and she grabs her. Elena looks up as the door to Nyx's motel room opens, and Nyx is pushed in with the demon right behind her. There's another demon already in the room with her sister.

"No." Nyx mutters when she sees the twins on the floor. They're on their blanket, and so far they don't seem to have any idea that anything's wrong.

"Lilith has a message for the two of you — you should've quit while you were ahead." The demon who pushed Nyx into the room says, and the girls both look at her.

Nyx suddenly flies across the room and her back hits the wall. She groans as she lands on the floor, and Elena flies to the other end of the room before she can make it to her sister.

"Sorry. We know better than to let you two get anywhere near each other." The other demon — a man — says. "We can't have you two working together and controlling your freakish abilities."

"Mommy?" Alex looks at her. He and Everly are huddling closer together now as they look at their mom.

"Alex, Ev, hide." Nyx quickly tells them, and they run between the two beds. They duck down and stay together as they stay close to their bed.

"Smart kids." The woman says as she takes a step toward them.

"Stay away from them!" She yells, and the demon flies back.

Elena's struggling against the other demon and then he slams her head down against the table, knocking her out. He then goes after Nyx and grabs her by her throat, pinning her against the wall. She struggles as the woman walks over to the twins.

"No!" Nyx yells, and she hears banging on the door. Sam, Vicki, and Caroline are trying to get in, but they can't.

"Come here, kiddies." The demon says, and the twins are crying as she walks over to them.

She reaches for them as she leans down in front of the toddlers. As soon as the demon grabs ahold of Alex's arm, she flies back and knocks over the table on the other side of the room. Nyx watches the twins, confused, and the demons look at each other.

"What the hell?" Nyx mutters. She didn't do that, and Elena's still out cold.

Both demons decide it's high time to get the hell out of there. They take off, running past Sam and the two girls.

Nyx immediately runs for the twins, and they cling to her as soon as she kneels down in front of them. Caroline runs for Elena as Vic moves toward Nyx and the two terrified toddlers.

"What happened?" Sam asks as he takes in the aftermath of the situation.

"Lilith sent them." Nyx says as she looks up at him. She has her arms around the twins, and both have their faces buried in her neck on either side of her.

"Lilith?" Vicki asks, confused.

"She knows." Elena says, and they look at her. "She knows that we've got a plan to kill her."

"How did she find out?"

"Wait, you guys what?" Caroline questions.

"She was here, wasn't she?" Nyx is still looking at Sam. She's livid, and she has tears in her dark eyes. "Ruby was here."

"Yeah, but—"

"No but Sam!" She snaps and then tries to calm down when the twins both jump, crying even harder. "There were two demons that we know of that knew I had powers. Ruby and Meg. But these demons didn't show up after Meg attacked me. They showed up now that Elena's human, and we have a plan to take down Lilith. Ruby has been playing you this whole time, and now my kids were attacked." She starts crying as she turns her head down, her eyes closed.

"Nycole. Elena." Cas' voice gets their attention, and they all look at him. He kneels down in front of Elena and then heals her before walking over to Nyx. "Is the baby okay?" He asks.

"I-I think so. I..." She fights back tears, and he presses his fingers to her forehead to check for injuries. "Was it you? The twins and the-the demon... Were you protecting them?" She asks, and he shakes his head.

"I felt your distress, but the demons were already fleeing." He tells her. "I don't know what protected the twins."

"I want Daddy." Everly says, and Nyx nods.

"Me too." She mutters as she rubs her daughter's back. "Daddy will be back soon, I promise." Nyx whispers.

"Are they hurt?" Cas asks, and Nyx shakes her head.

"No, they're just scared. The second the demon touched Alex, it— It was like something shoved her back." She says as she looks at the angel. "Like there was this force field around them or something. I don't know what it was. I just know that it wasn't us." She tells him.

"How much do you know?" Vicki questions as she stands up straight and looks at Sam. "How much did you tell Ruby?"

"Not much." He shakes his head. "Just that you guys had a plan, and you weren't telling me anything. But I'd overheard bits and pieces, I know you plan to kill Lilith."

"This is why we didn't tell you." Elena says as she gets to her feet. "We know you trust her, and that you'd tell her our plan. They were gonna kill me and Nyx, and do God only knows what to the twins."

"Oh, God." Nyx squeezes her eyes shut as she looks down.

She's sitting on the floor, leaning against her bed, and the twins haven't loosened their hold on her at all. Alex is sitting in her lap, facing her — his face is buried in her chest. He's crying as his tiny fists grab her shirt. Everly's standing and her head reaches to about her mom's — she has her face hidden in Nyx's hair and her arms wrapped around her neck.

Nyx has one arm wrapped around Everly and she's rubbing her back. Her other is around Alex's shoulders and she moves her hand to his head, gently raking her fingers through his brown hair.

"Nyx?" Dean calls from outside, thinking it's weird that the door to hers and the twins' room is wide open. "Nyx, baby—" He stops cold when he sees the position she's in with their kids.

Sam immediately moves out of his brother's path as Vicki and Cas step away from Nyx and the two toddlers. The stuff Dean was carrying falls to the floor as he rushes over to them. He kneels down beside them, and Everly moves around her mom to get to him.

"What—"

"We're okay." Nyx says as he scoops their daughter into his arms. "We're okay. It's okay." She nods as tears fill her eyes again.

"What the hell happened in here?" He looks around at the others as he moves closer to Nycole and Alex.

"There were demons. As soon as you left, one grabbed me outside." She starts crying again as her other arm wraps around Alex.

"Lilith sent them." Elena tells him when she sees that her sister can't continue, and Dean looks up at her. "They came for me and Nyx, said they had a message. You should've quit while you were ahead." She sighs. "One of them bashed my head into the table, I don't know what happened after exactly."

He looks at the broken table where the demon had landed and he sees blood there, but none on Elena. His eyes land on Cas, and he puzzles that together quickly enough. Dean then looks back at Nyx.

She's​ whispering to Alex, still trying to sooth him by brushing his hair back with her fingers. He's calmer now and his breathing is evening out, but he still won't look up.

Dean looks down at Everly. He's got one arm around her, and she's practically inside his leather jacket. She's hiding, but she's not crying anymore. Her hands are in small fists around his flannel, and he tucks her dark brown hair behind her ear. She looks up at him, and he lightly runs his thumb over her cheek to get rid of her tears. He then adjusts her in his arms as he moves closer to Nyx and Alex.

"I can get him now." Vicki says, and Nyx looks up at her. "One word, and I'm in my truck on my way to him."

"Go." Nyx tells her, and Vicki pulls her keys out of her pocket as she starts for the door.

"I'll call Ric." Elena says, then pulls Caroline out of the room with her.

"I'm sorry." Sam says and then follows after the two girls.

Cas disappears from the room after that, and Nyx sighs as she rests her cheek on the top of Alex's head. She's looking at Everly, watching the way her daughter's cowering into Dean. The twins have never looked as small and vulnerable as they do to her right now.

Alex moves his head so his face isn't hidden in her shirt anymore, he leans the side of his head against her chest. His back is to Dean, so he can't see his dad, but he knows that Everly's with him.

"I okay, Mommy." Alex says, and she smiles as she lifts her head and looks at him.

"Yeah? You're okay?" She asks, and he nods as he looks up at her.

"Mommy okay?"

"Mommy's okay, my love." She kisses his forehead and wipes his cheeks before looking over at Dean. "How's Daddy?"

"Confused. Freaking out." Dean says, and she takes a deep breath.

"They knocked out Elena, and it was like I lost half of my power. I couldn't do anything but watch." She says. "One of them had me pinned to the wall, and the other came over here to where the twins were hiding. She leaned down and grabbed Alex's arm...and then she just flew back. It wasn't me, it couldn't have been Elena, Cas said that it wasn't him. I don't know how it happened."

"They're okay." He says as he rests his hand on her leg. "You're all okay. That's all that matters now." He tells her.

"Screw taking things slow. I want you with us from now on. No more having separate rooms, you're sleeping with us." She says, and he nods as he reaches forward and wipes some of the tears from her face. She leans her head into his hand, and he sighs as he looks at her.

"Who's ready for bed?" Dean asks as he looks between the twins.

"Sleep wif you, Daddy?" Everly asks.

"Yes, princess. You and Alex can sleep with us tonight." He says as he gets to his feet, taking her with him. "Come on."

They get the twins into their pajamas, and then Dean lays salt down at the door and across the windowsill. Nyx is getting them to settle into the bed and she turns on the tv so that they can have cartoons playing while the twins are falling asleep.

She gets changed into her own pajamas, and then Dean walks over to her. "Are you alright?" He asks, and she shakes her head.

"No, and I'm not gonna be okay until Lilith is dead." She tells him, and he wraps his arms around her. She sighs as she leans into his chest, and they both look at the twins, who are slowly calming down enough to sleep.

"We'll be okay." He whispers. "One way or another — I will do everything in my power to make sure we're all okay."
