CHAPTER NINE

Nyx is standing outside of hers and the boys' motel room by the Impala, and she's currently on the phone with her blonde friend. She and Caroline have actually gotten a lot closer since Care turned into a vampire, despite the distance between two teenage girls.

"Nyx, I know that you're scared, but you can't just keep avoiding the subject with him." She says, and Nycole sighs.

"Why not?" She pouts.

"Because it's not going to do either of you any good." Care says, and she knows that she's right, but it doesn't change how she feels.

"I don't know what to say. I mean, there's not exactly a handbook on what to do when some psycho bitch who's trying to kill you tells your boyfriend that you're pregnant with his kids." She says. "Especially after he just said that there's always gonna be another monster to hunt. And what's even scarier is that I agree with him. I don't want to stop hunting either."

"So, tell him that." She says. "Talk to him about this, Nycole. Telling me isn't going to do you any good."

"But talking to you is easier."

"And I'm always gonna be here for you, but I'm not the one who can help you with this one. Talk to Dean, figure this out with him." She tells her, and Nyx sighs.

"How is that you drive me crazy, but also somehow manage to keep me sane?" She asks, and the blonde laughs.

"It's all part of my charm." She says with a smile. "I just texted Dean and told him to go and find you."

"Caroline—"

"Talk to you later." She says, obviously amused with herself, and then hangs up the phone.

Nyx hears footsteps walking up behind her and she puts her phone back in her pocket. She sighs, but doesn't turn.

"We have to talk about this eventually, it's not going to just go away." Dean says. "I'm pretty sure that once the pregnancy part is over, that's when the babies come."

"Really? And here I thought pregnancy was just a nine month flu and that babies actually came from storks." She says sarcastically. "Thanks for clearing that up for me before I looked stupid come December."

"Nyx..." He sighs, and she puts her hands together and presses her knuckles against her lips, trying to contain her anxiety. "Talk to me."

She finally turns around and looks up at him. "What do you want me to say?"

"The truth."

"You want the truth?" She nods. "Okay, here it is. I'm scared, Dean. I'm scared because neither one of us wants to stop hunting, and we're going to be parents. Okay? Is that what you wanna hear? That I'm terrified?"

"And you think I'm not scared?" He asks, and she shakes her head.

"No. You're you. You're invincible." She says, and he smirks, knowing that she's not being serious. "I don't know what to think half the time." She tells him. "All I know is that I'm not even eighteen yet, and I'm pregnant...and I'm terrified."

"This isn't exactly easy for me either."

She takes a deep breath as she looks at him. "So, what do we do, Dean? I'm a little over three months pregnant, and I'm going out of my freaking mind. I don't have a clue in the world. You have any brilliant ideas over there, Pops?"

A small smile forms on his lips upon hearing her call him that. In all honesty, he never thought that he'd get to be a father, it just wasn't something that he ever saw happening. But now he's standing in front of his pregnant girlfriend, and a part of him is really happy.

"Take a deep breath and just try to calm down." Dean says as he moves closer to her. "We have six months. We don't have to decide on everything right this second."

"No, but it'd be nice to be on the same page right this second." Nyx tells him as she leans against the trunk of the Impala.

He rests his hands on her hips, and she looks up at him. "This is the page I'm on right now." He starts. "I have a beautiful woman standing in front of me, and she's carrying my kids. Let's just start there and slowly work our way forward as we go."

She can't help the smile that spreads across her face. "You know this means that you're stuck with me for good now, right?" She asks, and he shrugs.

"I think I could get used to that." He says. "Besides, it's not like I could get rid of you before."

She smacks his arm, and he starts laughing. "I told you you're mean." She says, but then she pauses as she sighs. "Actually, I told Jenna that you're mean." Her voice is lower now.

"And then you called me a tree." He says, and she laughs.

"I wish she were here."

"I know." He leans down and kisses her forehead. "I'm sorry, baby." He whispers against her skin, and she closes her eyes.

"What if Klaus finds me?" She asks the question that's been bothering her since he left Mystic Falls, and Dean looks down at her. "He didn't care about the babies before, he won't care now."

"He's not gonna hurt you, any of you. I won't let him." He says, and she sighs as she looks up at him.

"He's a thousand years old, and he's a vampire-werewolf hybrid. We can't kill him. It's not possible."

"We have no reason to think that he'll even come looking for you. He doesn't know that you're alive." He says. "We'll worry about that if it ever becomes a problem, okay?" He says, and she nods.

"Oh, by the way, Jeremy wants to talk to you." She tells him, and he chuckles.

"I'm sure that conversation won't be nearly as intimidating as the next time I see Ric."

"He knew the last time he saw you."

"Yeah, but I didn't." He says. "It's different now. He can kick my ass now."

She laughs at the thought and then pauses for a second. "The only one who doesn't know about this now is Stefan." She says. "I really didn't think that I'd care, but I do."

"He saved your life, he tried to save your aunt." He says. "He's your friend."

"I never thought I'd be friends with vampires."

He laughs. "Me either." He says, and she looks at him, confused. "Caroline."

"Right." She nods. "Sometimes I forget that she's a vampire."

"Yeah, me too. It's probably why I'm not bothered by the fact that I just called her my friend." He says, and she laughs. "I love that laugh. You should do that more often."

"Maybe I would if you were funnier." She says with a smile, and he shakes his head.

"You're a pain in my ass."

"It's part of my charm." She says, and he nods.

"Uh-huh." He takes her hand in his and pulls her back to the motel room.

"Are we all friends again?" Sam asks when he sees them together.

"When were we ever friends with you?" Dean asks, and she smacks his arm again.

"Don't listen to him, Sam. You're more my friend than he is." Nyx tells him as she walks over to where he's sitting.

"Yeah, but you're still stuck with me for the rest of your life." His brother says.

"Damn, you're right." She mumbles. "Oh, well, at least you have a nice face." She says, and Sam starts laughing.

"Oh, you think you're funny?" Dean questions as he starts toward her.

"Your brother's laughing, isn't he?"

"I'll show you funny."

He goes after her, and she uses Sam as a shield before running around the table and then making a break for the bathroom. Dean grabs her before she can make it to hide in there from him and his arms snake around her waist. He spins her around, and she laughs as he falls onto the bed, taking her with him.

"God, help those children who are gonna have children for parents." Sam says from the table.

Nyx then grabs a pillow and chucks it at Sam. He laughs as he catches it, but then she and Dean start laughing when the one he threw hits Sam in the head.

"I'm going for food. Do you guys want anything?" Sam asks them.

"Pizza!" Nyx yells.

"Again?"

"Pizza!"

"You heard the lady." Dean looks at his brother. "Go get her some pizza."

"You're both nuts." Sam mutters as he grabs the keys to the Impala and leaves the room.

Nyx moves so that she can lay comfortably on the bed, and Dean adjusts himself beside her. He closes his eyes and drapes his arm across her torso. She smiles when she feels his hand on her stomach.

"I'm gonna be a dad." He whispers, and she turns her head only to find that he's already looking at her.

She leans over and kisses him, her hand moving to rest on the side of his face. And in that moment, they're just a normal couple. They aren't thinking about demons or vampires, and they aren't worried about every little thing that could so easily go wrong.

They're both just happy to be a family.

"Oh! I have something for you." Nyx says as she quickly gets up off of the bed and heads over to her duffle bag.

"What are you doing?" Dean asks, sitting up so he can lean against the headboard of the bed.

"Shush." She glances at him. "You'll see in a second...if I can just find the damn— Got it!" She smiles as she spins around, holding something in her hand.

Dean chuckles as he watches her quickly make her way back over to him, almost bouncing on her feet. She's hiding it behind her back and she smiles as she moves to sit in his lap, straddling him. She's clearly excited.

"What are you doing?" He repeats, but her smile only widens.

"Pick a hand." She tells him, and his fingertips drum against her thighs.

"Right."

Her nose scrunches. "Damn. I wanted to give you a hard time for a few more seconds." She says, and he chuckles.

"You're doin' that anyway." He tells her, and her smile returns. "S'alright, it's cute." He says, and she chuckles.

"Remember when I got back to my house after the funeral, and I told you that I'd been with Bonnie?" She asks, and he nods. "Well, I was, but... She took me to the doctor, just to make sure that the babies were okay after..."

"Babe." He squeezes her legs, pulling her out of her thoughts and prompting her to continue.

Nyx then pulls her right hand out from behind her back and holds up the ultrasound pictures between them. He looks at them, slowly taking them from her hand. She watches as his eyes scan the two black and white pictures.

"I was nine weeks. Meredith said that they were each about the size of a green olive." She tells him as she leans forward, and he moves the pictures to the side so that she can turn her head to see them as well. "This little dot is baby A, and this little dot is baby B."

"Who's Meredith?" Dean asks, his eyes still glued to the ultrasounds.

"Dr. Fell. I've known her since we were kids, but she's obviously older. She was my doctor for the appointment, and I call her whenever I have questions. So, I call her a lot." She says, and he smirks as he glances at her.

"I guess she's your mystery boyfriend then." He says, and her eyebrows furrow. "Sam's bad joke, never mind." He shakes his head.

Nyx suddenly gasps, and he looks at her with raised eyebrows. "Next time we're in Mystic Falls, we have to have another doctor's appointment. You have got to hear their heartbeats, it's the craziest thing ever." She tells him, and he smiles as he sees the excitement in her eyes. "I mean, it's kinda creepy too, but..."

"Yeah, we definitely should." He agrees, and she smiles at him. "Exactly how far along are you right now?"

"Almost fourteen weeks, so about three and a half months." She tells him. "The babies are each about the size of a lemon. Meredith texts me that each week, giving me a reference." She says, and he nods. "Did you know pregnancy is actually forty weeks? Ten months?"

"Seriously?" He asks, and she nods.

"So says Dr. Fell."

"Damn."

"Tell me about it." Nyx looks down at her stomach. "There are gonna be two tiny humans inhabiting my body for so long." She says as she shakes her head.

"Shouldn't you be showing?" He asks as he rests his hand over her stomach. "I really don't see any difference."

She shrugs. "Meredith says that every pregnancy is different, as every mother is different. She said that I could take longer and then show more quickly later. Or I could stay relatively small throughout a lot of the pregnancy. Or I could stay small and then pop." She chuckles. "I guess we'll see."

"You really are incredible, you know that?" Dean says, and she smiles as she looks back at him. "Come here." He sets the ultrasounds down next to them and then wraps his arms around her.

She pecks his lips and then leans down and nestles her face into the crook of his neck. Her eyes are closed and she takes a deep breath, perfectly content with cuddling into him as he holds her.
