XIV

Hiya guys!

Fair warning: brace yourselves...let's just say you may not like me anymore after this chapter...

Enjoy!

-*-*-*-*- Will -*-*-*-*-

Will sat with his chin resting on the table as he stared at the vial filled with blue liquid. Magnus sat opposite him and Will could feel his eyes watching him.

"Remind me again what this is?" Will asked the warlock.

"It's a powerful poison," Magnus replied. "But not for you; it's for a demon.. It will weaken the one in your head and hopefully allow me to extract it." Will stared at the potion again, feeling sceptical.

"But surely if there's a demon in my head then this will affect me too," he pointed out.

"It won't," Magnus said, shaking his head. "Shadowhunter blood is way too strong to succumb to this, a demon's however is not. All you should feeling is perhaps a little sick or woozy, but that is all." Will blew out some air, leaning back on the chair. Magnus had told him that removing the demon would not be a pleasant experience. But the fact was, Will had absolutely no idea what was going to happen. For all he knew, he was going to die at the end of this.

But Jem's life was in danger, as well as Tessa, Cecily, Gideon and Gabriel. Jem had told him that Shadowhunters were brave, that they protect their own and others. He had said that Will used to do that. So he didn't really have a choice. He had to do this and become who he really was again. That was the only way to free them, to free himself.

"Well, I don't exactly have much else to lose," he said to Magnus. "I might as well lose my sanity as well." Magnus gave him a grim smile.

"You'll lose a lot more than that if this doesn't go right," he muttered.

"Wait, what?" Will asked.

"Never mind," Magnus said, standing from his chair. Will followed him, taking the vial from the table and walking to the middle of the room where Magnus had drawn a pentagram on the floor. He looked at the warlock who gave him a nod.

"You're going to be alright, Will," he said. Will took a deep breath and stepped inside the pentagram. He looked at the vial.

"Well, bottoms up," he said before tipping his head back and draining the potion. Almost immediately, he began to feel dizzy and sick. He leant on his knees, breathing hard as sweat dripped from his forehead.

"Will, are you alright?" Magnus asked tentatively. Will waved at him, unable to speak. "I'm going to start the incantation now, Will," the warlock continued. "You need to stay awake as long as you can for me. Whatever you do, keep you eyes open, understand?" Will nodded, groaning slightly.

Magnus started charting, muttering the incantation under his breath. Will squeezed his eyes shut as the pressure in his head increased. God, it felt like a balloon was expanding in his head that wasn't going to burst. He moaned, clutching his head in his hands and falling to his knees.

"Ahhh, God!" he yelled. The pain was becoming too much and darkness clouded his eyes. He couldn't stay awake for much longer.

"Got it!" Magnus yelled. Will cried out as black smoke billowed from his mouth. He threw his arms out wide, gagging as he quite literally vomited up a demon. He let out one last shriek before he fell to the side, coughing violently. Magnus was by his side in a moment, dragging him away from the pentagram. Will's vision was blurry, fading in and out as he tried to focus on Magnus's voice.

"Magnus?" he croaked.

"Did it work, Will?" Magnus asked frantically. "Have you got your memories back?" Will shook his head.

"I-I don't kn-" he cut himself off with a cry as a searing hot pain shot through his head, almost like a knife. He fell away from Magnus, gasping as images flashed before his eyes.

He saw himself throwing knives with Cecily as they both tried to outdo each other.

He saw himself in the library with Tessa, both of them reading in silence but quietly contented with each other's company.

He saw his parabatai ceremony with Jem, both of them reaching across the circles of fire to grasp each other's hands.

It was all too much. He couldn't take it. The sheer amount of memories were overwhelming him. In the distance, he could just hear Magnus calling his name, trying to get through to him. He focused on Magnus's voice, trying to bring his mind back to clarity.

"Come on, Will, stay focussed," Magnus said to him. "Don't let yourself slip away. Stay focussed." The warlock gripped onto his shoulder, almost grounding Will to reality. Finally, the murk surrounding his thoughts cleared and he was able to think straight again.

"I-I think it worked," Will gasped, looking up at Magnus. "It bloody well worked." He glanced at the pentagram in the middle of the floor was a swirling mass of black smoke floated within, trying to break through the protection spells. "Is that the demon?"

"Yes," Magnus said. "I managed to extract it."

"Bloody hell," he said, his hand going to his head. "That was in my brain? Jesus Christ..." The warlock looked at Will carefully, his expression cautious.

"Tell me your father's name," he ordered. "Now."

"Edmund Herondale," Will answered almost immediately. He felt shocked and surprised at himself for answering so quickly.

"What about your eldest sister?" Magnus pressed. "Do you remember what happened to her?"

"Ella," Will said. "She-she saved my life by fighting Marbas. But then she died...and I thought I was cursed...that it was all my fault." Magnus paused for a moment.

"When you first came to me for help, what did you ask me to do?" he finally asked. Will blinked.

"I asked you to send me to the demon realms," he said quietly. "I couldn't bear to live a life where I couldn't love any longer. I wanted to die fighting." Magnus nodded, a small smile creeping to his lips.

"Welcome back, Will," he said, clapping his shoulder. "I think we've found your memories."

"I must say, that is impressive," a voice suddenly said. Will scrambled to his feet and Magnus spun around, complete shock on his face.

Standing by the pentagram, examining the swirling mass of black smoke trapped within it, was the one person Will really didn't want to remember. He growled, snatching a dagger from his belt with his newly remembered fighting skills.

"Hello, Mr Herondale, Mr Bane," Mortmain said, grinning evilly at them. "So good to see you again." Will didn't answer, only charged.

-*-*-*-*- Tessa -*-*-*-*-

"These could have been a lot worse," Tessa said to Cecily gently as she bound up the burns on the younger girl's hands using a torn piece of fabric from her dress. "You're lucky you let go when you did." When the girls had woken up in the cage they were sitting in, Cecily had panicked, immediately going for the bars. As soon as she wrapped her hands around them, they sizzled and she had to let go with a shriek.

"I just don't understand how they burned me," Cecily said. "They weren't even hot." Tessa shook her head.

"I don't know," she sighed. "Perhaps there is some sort of dark magic involved. They certainly used magic to get us here." She finished binding up Cecily's burns and sat back on her knees, looking around them.

They were in a square cage in the middle of some sort of warehouse. It was dark apart from a single light that shone down on them. Tessa had absolutely no clue where they were, but she knew Will's kidnapper was the one who took them. Just remembering what they did to him made her heart hammer. Against her will, fear started creeping into her thoughts.

"We'll be fine, Tessa," Cecily reassured her, as if sensing her thoughts. "Will and Jem are going to find us. I bet you they've already figured out everything and are on their way right now."

"I wouldn't get your hopes up, if I were you," a voice said, cutting through the darkness. Tessa pushed herself to her feet, peering through the bars to see the figure walking towards them. They wore a bronze wolf mask to hide their face but their clothes were rich and fine.

"Allow me to introduce myself, ladies," he said. "I am Lupus."

"You took Will!" Cecily growled. "You bas-"

"Ah, ah, ah," Lupus chided. "Let's not be having any language that is not becoming of a lady, shall we Miss Herondale? What would your brother say if he heard you cursing like that?"

"He would tell me to keep going!" Cecily shouted. "You sick, demented lunatic!" Lupus only laughed, shaking his head.

"Oh, you are a feisty one, aren't you?" he chucked. "Much like Mr Herondale, I must admit. He was a stubborn one to get through to."

"You said not to get our hopes up," Tessa said, trying to draw this man's attention away from Cecily. "Why?"

"Your fiancé is currently in my care, much like you are, Miss Gray," Lupus replied civilly. "And Mr Herondale will only be joining us once he remembers this location. That will be a while, I must say, but I am patient. I have time."

"What have you done with Jem?!" Tessa cried." Please, don't hurt him! He hasn't done anything wrong!"

"I have plans for Mr Carstairs that you do not need to know about yet," Lupus said idly. "But you must be wondering why you are here."

"You're trying to draw Will to us," Cecily spat. "It's obvious." Lupus clapped his hands mockingly.

"Yes and no, Miss Herondale," he said. "You are correct that I am trying to draw Will here and make him desperate enough to tell me where the book is."

What book? Tessa thought but she stayed quiet.

"But I also want to make him suffer," Lupus continued. "The Herondales once took everything from me, so naturally, I will take everything from him. I will rip him into millions of pieces just by making him watch what I'm going to do to you."

"Why?" Tessa asked. "What did the Herondales do? Why are you doing this to Will?"

"Did your father ever tell you the story of the Unseelie Queen, Miss Herondale?" Lupus asked. "It is a heart breaking tale, one full of loss and pain. You see, the Unseelie Queen was the most beautiful faerie there was, even more than the Seelie Queen. Her beauty was so radiant, that she caught the attention of the Unseelie King and he promptly married her." He paused, taking a moment before he continued.

"The King adored the Queen. He gave her presents and gifts almost everyday, spoiling her rotten some would say," he said with a laugh. "Sometimes, the King would present Shadowhunters to the Queen, ones that have murdered our people without mercy, and she would punish them ruthlessly. And I'm not just talking about beatings or lashings; I'm speaking of making them watch as she tore their families apart or made them experience torturous visions. One of her favourite things to do was remove some of their memories and watch as their families pleaded for them to remember. She really was a master of deception."

"What does this have to do with the Herondales?" Cecily asked.

"Well, in time the Clave grew more and more nervous about the Queen's power," Lupus said. "They sent a Shadowhunter by the name of Aaron Herondale to assassinate her. When he arrived in the Unseelie lands, the Queen knew and lured him into a trap. She tortured his mind, plaguing him until he almost went insane." Lupus sighed. "It was such a pleasure to watch. She was a master at work."

"Then what happened to her?" Tessa asked. Lupus's fists tightened at his sides.

"Late at night, when the Court was asleep, the Shadowhunter escaped from his bonds," he growled. "He snuck into the Royal bed chamber where the Queen was sleeping and stabbed her with a cold iron blade. Before anyone knew what had happened, he escaped back to the Clave. The King found his Queen the next morning and he wept for days until the cold thirst for revenge took over him. He vowed that he would hunt the Herondales and make them suffer as his Queen had made all Shadowhunters suffer. He had help, of course. Arthur Bates and the Shades were extremely useful in his plan. When he was ready after almost a century of preparing, he finally found William Herondale, but there was one last thing he needed to complete his revenge."

"The destruction of all Shadowhunters," Tessa whispered. "You want a powerful magic book to destroy all Shadowhunters. And only Will knows where it is."

"Yes, Miss Gray," Lupus said. "You are as clever as they say. And I suppose you know who I am."

"Yes," Tessa said. "You're the Unseelie King." Lupus removed his mask, showing them his face.

"Correct," he snarled. "Now let's see how much I can make James Carstairs suffer before Mr Herondale finally figures it out."
