Chapter 9
They reached the first fence and behind, loomed the farmhouse.
"We did it!" exclaimed Rook gleefully.
"I don't like this place," Domino said, flickering his eyes around. He was jittery and nervous. "It hasn't got a good feel."
"Nonsense. There are no such things as feels," said Rook firmly. He sniffed the air. He could smell the strong smell of horse and cow manure, dogs, something cooking, new paint and petrol. He could see that the smell of new paint was coming from the shining car parked in front of the farmhouse.
"Alright we're here," said Domino. "Now let's go home."
"Are you serious? We just got here!" exclaimed Rook. He slipped under the fence and padded towards the car. Domino trotted after him more unsurely but not wanting to be left behind.
"You know this is a bad place!" exclaimed Domino.
"We don't know anything, yet," Rook answered. He walked towards the farmhouse and peered into one of the windows. Inside was an old couch with old torn blankets on top. It was dark and messy. Rook made his way towards the kitchen window. Looking inside, it was much more bright. Light from outside streamed through it. A short lady with angry looking hair and eyes was cooking on a messy stove. Packets of food were open everywhere. Rook wrinkled his nose. The cooking food didn't smell especially good.
"Let's go," said Rook. Domino's eyes lit up.
"Great," he sighed in relief. "I'm starving."
"I meant let's go somewhere else in the farm," Rook clarified. Domino groaned but followed Rook. They padded past a large patch of dead grass. Beside them was a paddock with overgrown grass. They trotted down a small dirt path and in front of them loomed a stable. The stable was long and made of wood. It looked in good condition. From inside, Rook could hear many noises. He could hear the clucking of chickens and the snorting of horses. Rook motioned to one of the windows at the stable. He leapt onto a hay bale and climbed towards the window. Domino scrambled after him. Rook wasn't sure what he was looking for but this place certainly was interesting. Rook peered into the stable from the dirty uncleaned window. Inside, to the right, there were four horse stalls, the only ones in good condition. In each stall was a different horse. There was a bay horse, a fluffy darker bay horse, a grey horse and a chestnut horse. To the other side of the stable, in each stalls were hay bales or all sort of farmer things including forks and saddles. Walking up and down the small aisle were a few chickens. Rook flicked his tail.
"Let's go in," he said. Domino rolled his eyes but didn't complain, even he was slightly intrigued. They wandered to the stable entrance and squeezed inside. The smells were strong. The strongest smell was of horse and horse manure. Then there were the chickens and all the rubbish stacked on the hay bales at the end. The chickens clucked and ignored the new cats but the horses poked their heads over their stalls and neighed loudly, stomping their feet on the ground. Domino looked around in fear.
"I don't think we're welcome," he muttered. Rook took a deep breath. Suddenly, from behind one of the hay bales, leapt out a pale sand coloured cat with green eyes and a missing tail.
"Who are you?" the cat demanded loudly. There was silence. Even the chickens stopped clucking and huddled to one side of the barn.
"I'm um..., Rook. This is Domino," Rook replied as confidently as possible.
"What are you doing here? Are you searching for death?" questioned the cat. From behind him a few other cats appeared from the shadows. One she-cat with a missing eye and a light silver pelt sat beside the pale yellow cat. A dark brown tabby stood behind next to a black cat.
"No. We were just exploring," Rook answered carefully. The cat with a missing tail jumped down and padded towards them. Rook stood his ground. Domino was quivering.
"We're going to die," Domino was muttering under his breath.
"Aren't the rumours enough to keep you away?" Missing tail cat asked.
"I'm sorry!" blurted Domino. "We'll go. Right away!"
"We've got a reputation to keep up," Missing tail cat replied cooly. "We can't let you go."
"We won't hurt you if you don't give us a reason too," Rook said bravely although his voice shook. He wanted to see Saffanah and her family one last time. He didn't want them to wonder what had happened to him. He wished he had listened to Domino.
"Ha! Hurt us? We've been hurt," grinned Missing tail cat. "You seem like two very soft cats. Why did you come here?"
"I wanted to see the forest," explained Rook. "From nearer."
"What interests you about the forest?" interrogated Missing tail cat, raising an eyebrow.
"Well um... I don't know... I think I was found there," said Rook.
"Do you know what lives there?" questioned Missing tail cat. Rook shook his head. "The Clans."
"What Clans?" asked Rook, feeling excited.
"Why should I tell you?" shrugged Missing tail cat. He turned around and looked at the cats on the hay bale. "Kill them." Rook's eyes widened. Domino started whimpering.
"Please don't," begged Domino. Rook hated seeing his best friend like this. It was all his fault.
"don't kill him! It was my idea to come here! Kill me! Wait no, don't kill me. Don't kill us," Rook cried quickly.
"Kill them," Missing tail cat said more firmly. The cats leapt down from the hay bales and advanced.
