Chapter 7

Rook slipped into the cat flap. Night had come and his family had just come home from dinner. Jeremy was in the living room with Mary. They had their arms around each other and they were watching something on the television. Rook slipped quietly past them and up the stairs. He pricked his ears. He could hear nothing except for the blaring of the television. He pushed into Saffanah's room through her slightly opened door. Saffanah was on her bed, blanket over her and staring at the ground. She blinked when she saw Rook and smiled.
"Hey Rook," she whispered. She knew he would come. He always did. Rook smiled back. He trotted towards her, licked her hand affectionately, making her giggle and leapt onto the bed. Saffanah turned around and stared at the ceiling. Rook made himself comfortable on the blanket. He curled up into a ball, giving one last look at Saffanah. She was closing her eyes now. Rook was there. She was ready to sleep.
"Good night Saf," whispered Rook. Saffanah's eyes flickered open as if she had heard something. She drifted off with a smile on her face.

Rook slipped out of the cat flap early in the morning. Crickets chirped and the sun was just rising. Rook trotted from fence to fence. He finally saw Domino's house and leapt onto a roof. From there, he crossed all the roofs until he reached Domino's. He padded quietly on the pipe, peering over to see Diesel. Diesel was not there. He was probably still sleeping inside. Rook slipped inside the attic. Domino was there, sleeping curled up on the sofa. He looked peaceful. Rook watched him for a moment, giving him a few more seconds of rest. Then he trotted up to him and leapt onto the sofa.
"Wakey wakey," he said into Domino's ear. Domino jumped in surprise. His eyes opened lazily.
"What?" he moaned sleepily. Rook prodded him.
"Wake up. We're going to the farm," Rook said.
"Farm?" repeated Domino warily. He finally sat up, eyes still half closed. "I thought you would change your mind."
"Do you want some of my food or not?" asked Rook seriously.
"Fine. But let's eat first. Then we go," said Domino. "Follow me." Domingo shook himself then stretched before giving a large yawn. Then he led Rook to the attic door. They slipped out through the cat flap and slowly made their way down the stairs. Rook sniffed the air and listened carefully. At any sign of Diesel, he would have to run or hide. He didn't like the idea, he was no coward, but Diesel would bark and wake the whole house. They walked along a silent corridor. One door was open and Rook peered in. The room was bright and colourful. In a cot, a small baby was sleeping.
"Come on," Domino flicked his tail. They quietly padded down some more stairs and Rook found himself facing the front door. Prams and shoes were lined up beside it messily. They crossed the living room and into the kitchen.
"Where's Diesel?" asked Rook, not hearing the dog.
"Oh he's in the backyard. In his cage thing. He peed on the floor yesterday so it's his punishment," Domino said slightly smugly. He leapt onto the counter and Rook followed. Underneath a cupboard, were two bowls. One with cat food, the other with water. Rook sniffed the cat food. It smelt strongly of something. He didn't know what. He wrinkled his nose. The foot was brown and mushy. It looked even worst than Rook's food.
"Ew," Rook commented. Domino nodded then gobbled down the food.
"Can we go down to yours now and eat?" Domino said. Rook shrugged and rolled his eyes.
"Fine but then we get going," he said firmly. Domino nodded.
             "Yeah of course," he said.

--

Rook steered through the tall stems of sunflowers. It was dark as the sunflowers blocked any light from reaching them. Domino was nervously glancing about.
"Are you sure this is a good idea?" Domino muttered.
"I never said it was a good idea," replied Rook.
"aww thanks dude," Domino said. The ground was soft and moist under their feet. Small insects buzzed everywhere. Rook kept walking confidently. Domino followed behind, cowering at small noises. There was some squeaking.
"What's that?" whispered Domino. Rook rolled his eyes.
"You can't not know what that is," he said. "You're a cat."
"A mouse," guessed Domino. Rook nodded.
"You think we could hunt it?" asked Rook.
"Do you know how to hunt?" questioned Domino. There was some scuffling and the noises of mice were gone.
"No," admitted Rook. "We can try later."
"I'd rather eat the disgusting food my owners put out for me," shuddered Domino. Finally, they reached the end of the field and burst into daylight. Rook blinked in the sudden brightness. Then he stared out at what was in front of them. A small stream trickled in front of them and across from that was a field of long grasses and flowers. Behind that field was the farm. There was a big farmhouse and a new car parked in front of it. Behind that were some stables, a barn, pens for animals and a few paddocks. To the left of the farm were the large fields of crops the farmers grew. Domino trotted to the side of the stream and lapped the cold water thankfully.
"Mmmmm, this is soo good," mumbled Domino. Rook crouched beside the stream and drank some water as well. It was cold but clean. Rook pricked his ears. He stared at the field of long grasses and flowers.
"Do you hear that?" Rook whispered quietly.
"Mouse," nodded Domino, his tail rigid.
"I'm going to try and hunt it," Rook said. Domino gave him a skeptical look. Rook leapt over the stream and landed lightly. He crouched down and slowly made his way through the grasses. They tickled his stomach and nose but he he kept low and kept moving forward. He heard the faint scuffling of a mouse. He pricked his ears and kept his tail low. Every step was slow and quiet. He made sure to see what he was stepping on. He didn't know where these instincts came from but he loved it. He loved the feeling of exhilaration. The thought of being able to hunt. Suddenly, there was a squeak. It seemed right in front of him. The breeze blew gently and as the grass swayed, Rook spotted the mouse. Rook suddenly tensed up and froze. He didn't know what to do now. He had managed to sneak up on it. But what was he going to do now? Jump? He'd make noise. He'd miss. Should he go closer? He didn't want to risk it. He hesitated too long. There was a loud ear piercing shriek. Rook jumped back in surprise and glanced up as something dark shot down. A second later a large eagle rose again. In its talons was a small wriggling mouse. The eagle shrieked in victory. Rook sighed and sat down. Domino trotted over to him.
"You managed to sneak up on it. That was good," Domino pointed out. "Stupid eagle."
            "I just froze," sighed Rook.
"Well you've never hunted so that was really good," pointed out Domino. Rook was feeling sour. He wished he had just jumped. The eagle was probably laughing at him for not taking the mouse.
"I'll get it next time," Rook decided.
