Chapter 68
Rook and Horizon were huddled in the shade of a few bushes, a slim rabbit in front of them. They were waiting while the leader, deputy, medicine cat, Mintspot and Beetlejaw had a meeting in the leader's den. Acornpaw had gone out to train. Whiteleap had been instructed to watch over them. Rook did not like Whiteleap. His eyes were dark and his teeth barred, he seemed ready to skin them. Horizon prodded the rabbit.
"I'll take that," snapped Whiteleap, with a small growl. He grabbed the rabbit and bit a large chunk of it. He swallowed it without tasting it. Rook and Horizon watched him, not knowing what to do. Rook's stomach growled with hunger and Whiteleap gave him a mocking look.
"You should've eaten that when you got it," Whiteleap said, licking his lips and finishing the last bits of the rabbit. "What were you waiting for?"
"We're going to starve!" Horizon exclaimed, his stomach was empty and he stared at the food pile longingly.
"Maybe," shrugged Whiteleap. "Doesn't matter to me."
"Can we get that pigeon?" asked Rook politely, nodding to a pigeon in the food pile.
"No," answered Whiteleap flatly. "You had the rabbit. You should've eaten it straight away. Were you waiting for somebody to cut it up into nice little piece for you or something?" Whiteleap laughed at his own joke. Horizon let out a small growl, he was frustrated. He did not want to stay in WindClan any longer. He liked Rook, but he regretted trusting him. Rook obviously didn't know what he was doing. They were stuck, trapped in WindClan.
"I'm sorry," sighed Rook, as if reading Horizon's thoughts.
"Yeah," nodded Horizon. "You should be."
"I am. Really. I didn't know it would- I didn't know this would happen. I'm sorry we're stuck here. You know, I'll ask if you can leave. They only care about me. And, and I did meet my long lost sister," Rook said.
"Shut up," snapped Whiteleap. "You're hurting my ears."
"Shut up!" snapped back Rook. "You're voice is irritating." Whiteleap leapt to his feet, his fur rising.
"Oh, don't get triggered so easily," Rook said lightly, although inside he squirmed. Horizon gave Rook a small look of fear.
"Kittypet!" hissed Whiteleap. "Don't you dare talk to me like that!" Whiteleap unsheathed his claws and growled, a deep, horrible sound. Rook slowly got up.
"Chill!" he exclaimed, meaning it this time. "Sorry ok? Don't get triggered." Whiteleap let out a snarl and leapt. Rook was flung to the ground. Sharp claws dug into his flesh. He wriggled and struggled but this time, there was no getting out. Whiteleap's face was right beside his.
"I'm chill now," grinned Whiteleap, pinning Rook down. Horizon was frozen to the spot, not knowing what to do, too scared to attack. Rook snapped at Whiteleap, trying to bit him but Whiteleap dug his claws into Rook's flesh.
"Horizon..., a little help?" Rook murmured. Horizon finally acted. He launched himself wildly on Whiteleap. Rook shot up and saw Horizon and Whiteleap rolling on the ground in a fit of hissing and spitting. Rook leapt into the brawl. He bit into Whiteleap's tail and pulled. Whiteleap let out a howl and clawed at Rook's face while Horizon sunk his teeth into Whiteleap's tail. Whiteleap shook Horizon off quickly, making him sprawl on the ground. He slashed Rook across the face. Rook stumbled back, blinded for a moment. Whiteleap pounced on him and bit into his ear hard. Very hard. Rook whimpered.
"Hey!" a voice shouted. "Whiteleap!" Whiteleap didn't listen, he was mad. He was angry beyond calming. He clawed at Rook while Rook struggled. Suddenly, the weight was lift off Rook and Whiteleap was being pushed away by a striped golden she-cat. Another tom trotted over, to calm Whiteleap down.
"What are you doing?" barked the she-cat.
"Let me kill him!" snarled Whiteleap, eyes locked on Rook. Rook's breathing was shallow. He struggled to get to his feet and took a step back. The she-cat and the tom blocked Whiteleap's path.
"You can't kill him," growled the she-cat. "You know you can't. So calm down. You're acting stupid. Gorsestar is going to be furious. You're suppose to be watching them. Not attacking them."
"Move out of my way Goldenfall," Whiteleap warned.
"Whiteleap, you're being ridiculous," huffed the tom. "We're not getting out of the way. So shut your mouth and follow me."
"Don't talk to me like that Lizardpelt," hissed Whiteleap. Lizardpelt narrowed his eyes.
"Now," ordered Lizardpelt. Goldenfall turned to Horizon and Rook.
"Follow me," she said, motioning with her tail. "I'll bring you to the medicine den. Get you cleaned up. You're going to be fine." Rook managed a weak nod. They limped after Goldenfall towards the medicine den, leaving Lizardpelt and Whiteleap to argue alone. The medicine den was empty.
"Settle into those nests," said Goldenfall. "I'll be back." Goldenfall left, leaving Horizon and Rook alone for the first time since they had come.
"We've got to get out of here. This is our chance!" exclaimed Horizon. Some of his fur had been torn off and he had a few scratches here and there but he seemed fine otherwise.
"But you're hurt," pointed out Rook.
"Better than being dead," retorted Horizon. "Let's go!"
"I've got to stay," sighed Rook, thinking about his sister. He couldn't leave her. Not like this. Not without an explanation, without a goodbye. She would be broken.
"This is our chance!" sighed Horizon, making his way towards the entrance. "There's nobody out there! Let's go! I'm telling you, if we don't get out now, we're never getting out." Rooks sighed. He didn't know what to do. His body was aching and his cuts were burning. But they could escape. Get away from all of this insanity. He would never see any of them again. He would never have to explain himself to Willowpaw. Willowpaw... He hesitated at the thought of her.
"Come on!" pressed Horizon hurriedly, peering out of the den. "It's clear. Are you coming or not?" Rook took a deep breath, padded to Horizon's side and said, "No. I'm not. I'm sorry. You go. It's your chance. It was nice knowing you. I'm sorry I got you into this." Horizon stared at him blankly for a moment then dipped his head.
"Ok," he said. "It was nice meeting you too. Wish you the best." With that, Horizon slipped out of the medicine den. He slipped out of the camp entrance and the last of Horizon Rook saw was his tail. But it too, was gone in an instant. Rook turned away. He liked Horizon. They had not known each other for long but..., he considered him a friend. He would have wanted to get to know him more. Goldenfall finally returned with Troutfur. Troutfur looked disgruntled and slightly annoyed.
"Whiteleap, always him," mumbled Troutfur. His eyes scanned the den. "Where's Horizon?" Goldenfall raised her eyebrows in question, frowning slightly. Rook started to explain, wanting to make sure that Horizon would have a headstart on his escape.
"Right here," a voice said. Rook glanced up at the medicine den entrance in surprise. Horizon stood there. He walked into the den. Goldenfall smiled slightly.
"Ok. Both of you, stand over there," ordered Troutfur. Rook shot Horizon a questioning look. Horizon joined Rook's side.
"I thought we could spend more time together... Afterall, I wanted an adventure, didn't I?" Horizon said. Rook couldn't help but smile.
"Thanks," he grinned. "Being here is slightly more bearable with you." Goldenfall turned to them, tilting her head.
"You know," she said. "You're both free to go. Anytime. Just tell us. You're not prisoners. Just guests."
" Who need supervision," added Horizon.
"Just in case," shrugged Golden. "But if you decide you want to leave. You can. We'll escort you out of our territory. I don't know if its the same for you Rook. We're still figuring things out about the Stormkit thing." Rook nodded.
"oh," was all Rook could muster. Troutfur hobbled up to them, leaves clamped in his mouth.
"Sit," commanded Troutfur. Rook obeyed obligingly. Soon, they were all patched up and feeling much better.
"I'm going back to that meeting," huffed Troutfur, disappearing. Goldenfall shot Rook and Horizon a look.
"You hungry?" she asked them. Their eyes lit up and they nodded enthusiastically. As Rook and Horizon trotted to the food pile with Goldenfall, Rook couldn't help but smile. He had a friend. In this crazy, upside down world, at least he had a friend. And a sister too. Maybe everything would be fine. He would get to know his cat family and his human family.
"I'm glad you came back," Rook told Horizon candidly.
"Yeah. I don't know whether I regret it or not yet," chuckled Horizon. "But..., this was what I was getting into when I decided to leave my humans. I realised that as I was escaping. I wanted to know about the Clans my whole life. And now I've got the opportunity. Then, once we get out, I'll explore the rest of the world. Oh the stories I'll have to tell!" Rook couldn't relate to Horizon. All he wanted was his family. He wanted to live with them for the rest of his life. But he admired Horizon's ambitions.
"You know..., maybe we could do a bit of adventuring together," grinned Rook, afterall he would have to look for Saffanah, and that guaranteed an adventure.
