Chapter 66
Rook jolted awake. He blinked. It was dark. Pitch black. Rook took some time to adjust and made out Willowpaw beside Acornpaw. She looked peaceful. He tilted his head. He wondered if Mintspot was his mother. He wondered what it would be like to grow up in this Clan. He would never have met Saffanah and her parents. He didn't think he would be able to live without Saffanah or her parents. They were her family. He was their family. Or, at least he thought he was. They had left him, hadn't they? But they had had no choice. He felt slightly sad at the though, slightly betrayed that they hadn't fought harder to keep him. But he forgave them. He still loved them. He would never not love them. Horizon groaned in his sleep. Rook felt a pang of guilt for dragging Horizon along with him. It was his fault they were here. In WindClan. Rook felt lost. He jumped when a voice spoke.
"Rook?" Willowpaw yawned.
"Yeah," Rook whispered back, ears perked up.
"I know this is weird but... I know you were Stormkit. You were Stormkit. My brother," Willowpaw said. Rook didn't say anything for a moment. He tried to form his words.
"Yeah. Yeah, I think I'm starting to get that," he mumbled finally, it was the truth.
"Yeah. Huh. When you get to know Mintspot..., she's not as crazy or sad as she seems. She's just desperate, you know? She missed you. A lot. After you were gone, I don't think she was ever truly happy. Not once," Willowpaw's voice was small. Rook wanted to creep to her side and hug her. He wanted to comfort her. He didn't like the quiver in her voice.
"I'm sorry," sighed Rook. "I wished I remembered you. And this Clan and Mintspot and Beetlejaw and all... but I don't. I just..., all I remember, all i know is my family. Saffanah, Diana and Jeremy."
"Yeah. I get it," Willowpaw nodded in the dark. "I do. I understand you're going to have to go. And I'm going to make sure our Clan, especially our parents, do not fall apart."
"Our parents...," echoed Rook. Finally, he got up and sat beside Willowpaw. He leant against her after a moment of hesitation. She didn't move away. She melted into his comforting fur and leaned her head against his shoulder. So this was what it felt like. To have a sister, thought Rook. He liked it. He could feel the bond with Willowpaw. It was strong. It was real. It was something nothing could be broken. Not even when he had been taken from the human. It had always been there. It had guided him here.
"I never thought I could miss somebody I had never met," murmured Rook almost to himself but Wilowpaw heard.
"Yeah," she agreed. "Yeah... I always..., I always dreamt about you. Imagined you. I created this perfect image of us and our parents. A family. A happy family. One where MIntspot would always be happy and Beetlejaw would teach us battle moves and we would play with each other. But I guess, it was never going to happen. It's never going to happen. Because, maybe it wasn't supposed to happen. Maybe you'll go on and find your family, Saffanah and all. And you'll be happy forever. And I'll be with Acornpaw too. He makes me happy. Very happy. And Mitnspot and Beetlejaw will be happy to know that you're alright. They won't be cowering in the doubts and shadows, not knowing if you're dead or alive, wondering if you're ever coming back. Because now I guess, they know. They know you're not dead. That you're fine. That you're ok. That you have a family. A human family but still a family. So..., I guess what I'm trying to say is..., I've let go of my vision of a happy family. A family with you in it. It was taken away that night when we were born. But I'm finally seeing that that isn't necessarily a bad thing." Rook thought about it for a moment.
"I'm sorry. That you went through so much pain. I saw Mintspot, there's something about her... I don't know how you lived with it all these years. With parents so distant from you," mumbled Rook. He truly felt sorry for her. He felt bad he had never really thought about his cat family or cared. He had waved it off, saying he had his own family. While his sister had been neglected and a whole Clan mourned his loss. He dipped his head.
"It's not your fault," whispered Willowpaw. "It's none of our faults."
"In a way maybe it's Arthur McFlint's fault," Rook pointed out then remembering Willowpaw didn't know who he was.
"Who?" Willowpaw asked.
"He was our neighbor," explained Rook. "He lived beside us. He's the one that picked me up. The night of the storm."
"Oh, " was all Willowpaw could utter.
"Yeah. Crazy right? imagine if he hadn't. We would have grown up together. Mintspot wouldn't have been like this. And I wouldn't have met Saffanah. My best friend," Rook said.
"Weird."
"I know. What are they going to do? Tomorrow?"
"What do you mean they?"
"The leaders and Mintspot and everybody. What am I going to do?"
"I don't know. Honestly, I don't know. I know I've got to tell Troutfur. About this dream I had. More like a visit, really. From there, I guess things will just unfold."
"Ok... I can't stay here forever, you know that, right?"
"Yes. I do. I don't think Mintspot or Beetlejaw or the rest of the Clan will understand. Not right away. But I'll make sure they do."
"Thank you."
"You're welcome. It's nice, to have a brother."
"I rather like having a sister too."
"When you leave, with Horizon, I hope you find your family. And I will miss you."
"Me too." They settled into a comfortable silence. They both knew they were being honest. Being each other was nice. They would miss each other, a lot. Much much more than before. Willowpaw had finally found her brother and she didn't know if she was ready to let him go right then. She knew she would have to. Even Splashclaw said so. But right then, she wanted to stay beside him forever, knowing that they were siblings. That they would love each other no matter what.
