Chapter 62
Rook and Horizon found themselves in tall grasses. They knew they weren't safe, although they were out of the forest. Rook could smell cats. Something about the smell sparked something in his mind but he didn't know what. He padded carefully. The soil felt right on his paws. Horizon followed him more cautiously.
"We really need to get away from the Clans," Horizon said.
"Yeah," nodded Rook, not listening fully. "I didn't think it would go like this. I thought we'd be able to talk a bit more- civilised." Horizon stopped beside a large fallen tree. Its bark was split as if struck by lightening a long time ago as moss and all kinds of plants were growing onto it from the ground. Rook sniffed, something about the tree flashed in his mind. He was delusional. He shook himself.
"Where do you think we are?" asked Horizon, stopping to smell the air.
"WindClan," Rook replied instantly. He knew.
"Oh," Horizon said. "Which way out of the forest?"
"I want to talk to them," Rook said, making up his mind.
"What do you mean?" Horizon asked skeptically.
"I think, I think I might find answers here. Maybe to my family. I don't know. But answers," Rook tried to explain what he was feeling. Horizon raised an eyebrow, not understanding.
"Are you sure? I don't want to almost die once more," Horizon cringed at the thought of the ThunderClan and ShadowClan cats.
"I'm sure. Look, just trust me, ok?" Rook said, giving Horizon a pointed look.
"Why would they know anything about your family though?" challenged Horizon, not completely convinced.
"I don't know. We'll see," Rook shrugged.
"Not very convincing," sighed Horizon. "But I guess we're going to have to go with it because they're here." Horizon gulped. Rook spun around and sure enough, a group of cats had appeared. They were slim with long legs and long, thin tails. A dark brown cat with shining fur stood at the edge of the patrol and Rook felt a jolt in his body although he didn't know why.
"And who are you?" a dirty grey cat growled, his eyes dark and locked on Rook and Horizon. Horizon shuffled behind Rook, trembling slightly. Beside the grey cat was a younger brown tabby cat.
"Kittypets," the smaller cat judged although Rook could see muscles rippling under his thin fur.
"mmm. You made a mistake coming here," hissed the dirty grey cat. Horizon squeaked. The sleek brown cat in the back, didn't say a word but his eyes locked on Rook and Rook could feel them assessing him. The grey cat looked back.
"What are you doing Beetlejaw? Let's get em," the grey cat questioned. The brown tabby, an apprentice, nodded vigorously.
"No. Sootwhisker. Don't," Beetlejaw replied, his eyes fixed on Rook. "I-I have a feeling."
"What do you mean Beetlejaw?" Sootwhisker made a face.
"Let's get em!" exclaimed the apprentice.
"No. Acornpaw," Beetlejaw snapped. Then he walked forward until he stood right in front of Rook. Rook could barely breath but he held Beetlejaw's eye contact. Rook didn't know what he was feeling but he knew something about this cat was different.
"Who are you?" Beetlejaw questioned, his voice was low but there was a slight tremble.
"My name is Rook. I'm here for answers," Rook replied as confidently as he could. From behind Beetlejaw, Sootwhisker and Acornpaw advanced, tails low and claws unsheathed.
"Hmm. Follow me," Beetlejaw finally decided, swivelling around. Sootwhisker shook his head.
"What are you doing?" he cried. "No. We're driving them out of here."
"Trust me Sootwhisker, this is different," Beetlejaw said, looking dead serious. Sootwhisker paused a moment, glaring at Rook but finally relented. Beetlejaw led Rook and Horizon into the tall grasses. Rook smelt it. It was a beautiful fresh air. He loved it. He imagined running through it, with nothing blocking his way. To feel the wind in his face. Horizon padded nervously beside him, casting glanced at Sootwhisker and Acornpaw who walked behind them, pressing them forward. Finally, they reached the camp. Beetlejaw slipped under a short tunnel. Rook followed with Horizon on his tail. They emerged in a calm camp. Cats turned up from what they were doing and got up, chattering amongst themselves. They approached. A light striped cat who looked slightly old but wise, trotted forward. His eyes reflected wisdom and knowledge. Rook's gaze flitted over the heads of countless cats but landed on a particular she-cat. She had light brown fur and sad eyes. They were almost hollow. Her back leg was limp and she craned her neck over the crowd. Rook couldn't stop staring.
"What is this?" the old cat demanded. A she-cat with light grey fur, appeared beside the old cat. "Beetlejaw?"
"I- I- Can we talk in private?" Beetlejaw asked the cat.
"Alright," nodded the older cat. Rook and Horizon were led into a den with all kinds of herbs lining the walls. A dark brown striped cat was there, his eyes rested on Rook then dipped his head.
"What is the meaning of this?" questioned the she-cat with light grey fur.
"I will explain Doestripe, Gorsestar and Troutfur," Beetlejaw acknowledged the cats then turned to Rook. "I just... there is something about him. About you." Beetlejaw spoke directly to Rook. He didn't know what to say. Then another cat appeared.
"This is private!" Gorsestar called. "Unless you need medical help."
"It's me," a she-cats voice floated into the space. Beetlejaw made a face and got up. He padded to the entrance but the she-cat burst in. She made her way down, dragging her limp leg behind her. Then her eyes were on Rook. He stared right back. The way the she-cat seemed to be reading him was disconcerting.
"Mintspot?" questioned Doestripe.
"S-S-Stormkit?" stammered Mintspot in almost a whisper. Gorsestar and Troutfur shared a look. Beetlejaw watched, his emotions carefully hidden. Horizon sat back, feeling completely lost. He just wanted to get out.
"N-No. My name is Rook," Rook corrected. Mintspot advanced until she was right in front of Rook. He could smell her. She smelt familiar. The scent tickled his nose. He looked away.
"Mintspot, this is a private conversation," Doestripe said kindly.
"No Doestripe. Just wait," Gorsestar told Doestripe, his eyes on Mintspot. Beetlejaw padded beside Mintspot. He watched her, his eyes full of concern.
"No. No..., I know- I'd know you anywhere. Stormkit... Stormkit!" Mintspot cried. She seemed delusional to Rook. Whatever had made her cripple probably messed up her brain. Who in the world was Stormkit?
"I'm sorry, you're mistaken," Rook said softly. "I'm Rook. And that's Horizon. I just came..., for answers. About my family." As he said that, something dawned on him. Family. About his family. But which family. His cat family or his human family. Rook softened, looking inot Mintspot's eyes. He saw himself reflected back.
"Stormkit... it really is you," whispered Mintspot, her whole body shaking.
