Chapter 60
Rook was suddenly aware of something else. Another presence beside Soultstorm. Horizon glanced to his side and to his horror, there was another cat, standing still, watching. Rook looked around. While Soulstorm had been talking, cats had surrounded them. He counted three in total. They were all strong and wild. They were warriors.
"I'm sorry but the tour of ShadowClan is over. If you'd kindly leave our territory," Soulstorm purred in a mocking tone. Rook thought it was too good to be true. Then there was a flash of movement and Horizon let out a scream. A dark brown cat charged at Horizon and from behind, another cat wrestled Rook to the ground. He thrashed wildly. He felt claws dig into his sides and let out a wail. He felt teeth grab his fur and rip it. He threw his attacker off for another cat to face him. This cat was a young spotted female.
"Get him Petalpaw!" shouted the cat that Rook had thrown off. He stood a meter away, watching Petalpaw and Rook. Petalpaw let out a snarl and pounced on Rook. Rook unsheathed his claws and did whatever he could do to survive. He dug them into Petalpaw's sides. She growled and bit into his ear and pulled. A sharp pain ran through his body. With a burst of strength, Rook threw Petalpaw off him and shot off. He didn't check for Horizon. He felt bad for that but he knew if he stayed any longer, he would not survive. They would tear him to bits. He heard two cats chasing him, one was Soulstorm. He hated the thought of having to fight her. She would destroy him in a second. The other cat was a brown tabby. They were yowling ferociously as Rook fled. Then he spotted some way away was Horizon. Horizon was being chased by the dark brown cat and his tail was in between his legs. Rook pushed himself to go faster. They might be able to escape together. Harmed but not dead. Then Soulstorm tackled Rook to the ground. He let out a whimper. Oh no. He yelled and struggled but Soulstorm pinned him down, hissing. She dug her claws into his side.
"Soulstorm!" a voice shouted. Soulstorm glanced up and Rook managed to slip free. The tabby cat appeared in front of Rook, blocking his way and behind him was Petalpaw, ruffled and angry.
"What are you doing?" demanded a voice. A cat as black as night appeared. Rook was about to faint on the spot. If it was possible, she looked even more scary than Soulstorm. She was as black as the night.
"Chasing these rogues away," hissed Soulstorm. The black she-cat padded to Rook and studied him, her eyes were cold and pierced him. He looked down, unable to meet her gaze. To his left, Horizon was being herded toward him by the large brown cat. Horizon stumbled and stood beside Rook.
"They barely look older than apprentices," noted the black cat. "They are not a threat. Dogtooth and Trailrunner, get to the border and check for any other cats. Petalpaw, you may go with your mentor." Trailrunner, the brown tabby cat nodded to Petalpaw and followed Dogtooth away.
"We weren't going to kill them," Soulstorm assured the black cat.
"We cannot kill any cats. You all know that. It is the warrior code," the black cat said although her eyes were filled with hatred towards Rook and Horizon. "The other Clans would go against us if they found out we had killed some kittypets."
"Right, Batstar," nodded Soulstorm. Batstar flicked her tail. Rook knew at once that she was the Clan leader.
"Follow me," ordered Batstar. Together, the cats led Rook and Horizon deeper into the forest. Finally, they reached a forest floor covered in red and yellow leaves and skeleton like trees. Batstar turned to Rook and Horizon, her claws unsheathed and her eyes dark.
"If you dare cross this border once more, we will hurt you more than you can imagine," Batstar warned in a low voice. Rook nodded, believing her completely. Soulstorm glared at Rook, her eyes fixed on him, ready to pounce if he were to do anything out of line. Horizon and Rook turned around and quickly ran further into the oak forest until ShadowClan was far behind them. Rook and Horizon turned back to make sure the blood thirsty cats were gone.
"I'd heard of ShadowClan before but I never thought they'd be this scary," shuddered Horizon.
"Yeah....," Rook shook himself and took a deep breath. They were not in danger anymore. "We're ok. We're safe now." Just as the words left his lips, two cats appeared. One was a striped brown cat and the other was a tortoiseshell cat. Rook motioned to Horizon and the quickly and silently, retreated away. The cats were talking together, not paying attention to anything. This was good, Rook and Horizon snuck away, their heartbeats racing. Horizon stepped on a twig. Crunch. The sound was almost louder than anything Rook had ever heard. He shot Horizon a look and Horizon bit his tongue.
"Sorry!" he cried.
"Did you hear that?" one of the cats said. The two cats stopped walking and scanned the area. Rook and Horizon pressed themselves to the ground, barely hidden by a almost bare bush.
"No. Probably a bird or something," shrugged the female cat but the tom shook his head.
"I'm sure it was something," he insisted. "I'll go there. You go left." The she-cat shrugged.
"Alright Mosshowl," sighed the she-cat. "I thought we were going to go on a relaxing stroll. Just you and I." Disappointed, the she-cat turned around and started to pad away.
"Sorrelpelt," Mosshowl called. "I'm sorry. Yes, I know this was going to be a nice walk. You're right. I'm sure it was nothing. A bird, like you said." Sorrelpelt smiled a little and they walked away together once more. Rook and Horizon shared a sigh of a relief.
"Let's get out of here," murmured Horizon. Rook nodded. All thought of his family and finding answers were gone, replaced by the sheer need to get away unharmed from all these Clans.
"Yeah," agreed Rook, nodding vigorously, "let's."
