Chapter 42
Rook curled up in the corner of the living room, his eyes sharp and ears pointed forward. Rick was much more talkative than he had had been when meeting Rook's former owners. Now, he taunted Rook.
"Come get this mouse!" screamed Rick, dangling a toy mouse in his hand. He dragged it in front of Rook. Rook felt his fur rise. He wanted to run away but the family had not given him any chance of escaping.
"Stop annoying the cat," said Andrew, playing on his computer.
"He's so boring," snorted Rick, dropping the mouse on the ground. "He can't do anything."
"What do you want him to do?" asked Matt, raising an eyebrow. "He's just a cat."
"Yeah. Ugh, a dog would be so much better," huffed Rick. He slumped onto the couch. Emily, who was working, looked up.
"You're not getting a dog until you show us that you can take care of the cat," Emily said firmly. "Have you fed him dinner yet?"
"No, I'll do it later," Rick said dismissively. Rook had had enough. He slunk off. He trotted uptstairs to the masterbedroom. He knew he was not allowed there.
"Hey, go check what he's doing!" said Andrew.
"You go," replied Rick.
"You're never getting a dog like this," warned Emily.
"Fine!" Rook's eyes lit up as he leapt onto the soft red bed. The window was open. Without thinking, he threw himself out. He felt the wind whip his face. His world swirled. He was falling uncontrollably. He twisted himself and suddenly, he felt the ground, hard under his paws. Without thinking, he shot off down the road. He was out. He had escaped. Now he had to find his real family. Everything was different. Even the smell was slightly different. The houses were different shapes, with different colours. Rook kept his eyes peeled for any sign of his family. Finally, he reached a large field. Beyond the field were more large fields, some wild, some growing crop. The fields were dotted with small villages and lone houses. Beyond that was a rocky surface and beyond that, trees. Forest! It must be the same forest he could see from his old home. With a spring in his step, Rook went towards the forest. He walked with determination, his eyes glued to his destination. He trotted through large fields, ignoring the pain in his paws and his growling stomach. Rook had reached the end of a wheat field when he finally stopped. He collapsed on the ground, beneath the shade of some trees. He glanced up, realising that the sun was starting to set already. Rook blinked. He heard the trickling of water. Getting up once more, he edged towards the sound of water. He found a small stream. He gladly drank the water. He thought about continuing but his body begged him to rest. He gave in. He slipped under a bush and curled up. He shivered as the cold slowly seeped through his fur as the night progressed. He didn't complain. He was going to find Saffanah. He was going to find his family. He was going to see Domino again. It didn't matter that his stomach was empty. That his pads were bleeding and his muscles aching. All that mattered was that he got to that forest.
