Chapter 40
They were moving out the next day. His family was moving out. Leaving him behind..., with another family. Rook sighed and curled up on Saffanah's bed beside her. For the last time. He heard her snoring gently and tried to remember this moment.
Rook awoke to Saffanah petting him on the head.
"Are you ready?" asked Diana, walking into the room. She smiled when she saw Saffanah petting Rook. "You sure you packed everything that's his?"
"Yes," nodded Saffanah. She scooped Rook up into her arms. She followed Diana out of the room and downstairs. Jeremy was at the open front door. He held a plastic bag in one hand with many notes about Rook's food, diet, health issues and vets. It also contained a few treats and Rook's brush. In Jeremy's other hand was Rook's carrier. Inside was one of Rook's bed that they had bought for him but he never used, a towel which Rook sometimes used to sleep on or that they used to clean him when he was wet. There was also the half empty packet of Rook's food, water and food bowls and a few more things of Rook's.
"Let's go," said Jeremy. "We need to get back as soon as possible." Diana nodded and herded Saffanah into the car. The AirCon was already on and Rook stretched as he settled on Saffanah's lap. The car drove off. Rook watched the countryside pass by. He felt a sad stab in the stomach. The whole ride was quiet, nobody knowing what to say. Diana had her arms crossed across her chest and Jeremy looked slightly down. When they arrived, Rook's new family were all standing outside, waiting. They welcomed Saffanah's family and Rook with open arms.
"Here, let me take him," said Emily, taking Rook from Saffanah. Rook stiffened and without thinking, he leapt out of her arms. Emily let out a small "oh" and jumped back. Rook shook himself and glared at her. He trotted back to Saffanah's side. Saffanah looked smug.
"Oh, I think he knows you're going to leave him," Emily said, brushing it off. Matt took the things from Jeremy's hands.
"Please take care of him. And send pictures and videos," said Diana.
"Of course of course!" Emily assured them. "Do you want to come in for a drink?"
"Oh no, we're very busy, thank you though," Jeremy smiled.
"Goodbye Rook, we're going to miss you so much," Diana sighed, bending down. She hugged Rook close. He snuggled up to her. He couldn't help but forgive her for leaving him. Jeremy pet Rook lovingly.
"You're going to like your new family," He said, mostly to himself.
"Bye Rooky..," whispered Saffanah. "I love you."
"I love you too," cried Rook sadly. He was suddenly lifted off the ground by Emily. She waved at Diana, Jeremy and Saffanah.
"Good luck with the move," she said with a bright smile. Rook watched as his family retreated to the car. He felt his eyes prickling. He felt his whole body sag. He felt his energy crumbling. He just hung in Emily's arms. Then Emily turned around and marched Rook back into the house. He got one last glimpse of his family. They were watching from the car, their eyes shining with tears. Then they were gone.
