Chapter 38
Rook watched as Saffanah started packing her things into the large boxes at the side of her room. He felt a cold shiver run through his spine. Saffanah moved slowly and sadly.
"Saffanah, are you done yet?" Diana asked, poking her head into the room. She saw that practically nothing was done. "Saffanah...."
"I'm doing it," protested Saffanah.
"I know you're sad dear," sighed Diana, sitting on the bed and running her fingers through Saffanah's long hair.
"Why do we have to go?" sobbed Saffanah.
"Because... it's really important to your Dad. Do you think you could be strong, for him?" asked Diana. Rook pricked his ears. Strong? They were going to leave him! He felt angry, betrayed. But deep down, he knew that the family loved him a lot. He knew that leaving him would be one of the hardest things for them.
"Just finish one box and Dad and John will do the rest, ok?" Diana said gently. Saffanah nodded. Diana stepped out of the room but not before giving Rook a small scratch behind the ear. Saffanah stared blankly at the wall ahead.
"I don't want to leave you," Saffanah said. "I'm not going." Rook was touched but he knew she had to go. He wanted to live with her. Maybe alone in a big house with a lot of human food. But... he knew that she needed Diana and Jeremy. They were her parents. Humans needed their parents more than cats did. Rook never knew his parents afterall. When Saffanah finished packing one of her boxes, she jogged downstairs for lunch. Rook trotted down and was about to curl up on the couch, to listen to the family and their friend John talking when Domino poked his head into the house from the front door flap.
"Hey," he said then spotted the family. He quickly retreated outside. Rook slipped out after him.
"hey," he replied.
"Why are there loads of boxes outside and that huge truck?" asked Domino, nodding at the large moving truck in the driveway and the boxes all around it. A man and woman were sitting at the back of the open truck, chatting and snacking on sandwiches.
"They're moving, remember?" said Rook.
"Wow. I didn't think it'd be so soon," sighed Domino. "SO when are you moving into my house?" Rook frowned.
"I'm not- I'm not moving into your house," Rook said.
"W-why not?" asked Domino, slightly indignant.
"I can't. They've found me a new home," sighed Rook.
"So? Don't tell me you're going to go along with it?" asked Domino.
"i'm hardly going to run away," said Rook. He had accepted his fate, although he didn't like it.
"Yeah, you can. I mean, you don't want to live with some weird family that you don't know, right?" Domino said.
"I don't know. I guess I am. The Mum feeds me human food," Rook said, trying to point out the positive.
"I don't care! You've got to live with me. Or at least somewhere near," Domino said.
"I want to. I really do," said Rook, hanging his head.
"We won't see each other if you go live with that other family!" cried Domino.
"Of course we will. I'll find you. I promise," Rook said.
"You better. Or I will hunt that family down till I find you then I will kill that family," Domino said angrily.
"Right..., I don't know how you're going to do that but thanks," grinned Rook.
"Hey, I can be deadly when I'm mad!" exclaimed Domino.
"Of course," Rook said, rolling his eyes.
"So you promise you'll come and see me, preferably everyday, when you go to your new family?" Domino said.
"I promise," promised Rook. With that, the best friends parted and Rook returned to his home. Although, he thought sadly, it wouldn't be his home for very long anymore.
