Chapter 2

Willowkit pricked her ears and craned her neck over Mintspot's large paw. Mintspot rested her head on her paws, not listening, eyes closed. On the otherside of the nursery, giving Mintspot and Willowkit space as Mintspot had requested, were Wrency and her kits. Wrencry was telling a bedtime story to Acornkit and Snailkit. Snailkit was curled up in her belly, eyes closed. Acornkit was sitting beside her, looking up at her, eyes sparkling. He was listening intently. Willowkit too, was listening. She loved Wrencry's stories although Mintspot hated them. Wrencry sometimes spotted Willowkit listening and would raise her voice. Tonight, the story was about the battle between ThunderClan and ShadowClan and WindClan and RiverClan. Willowkit knew that she had been born the night the battle had ended. She didn't know why the battle had started in the first place. She didn't know who had been involved, why her Clan had joined forces with RiverClan or even who had died.
"The battle started over a piece of land. ThunderClan started going into our territory, then they started going into RiverClan's territory. ShadowClan had been threatening RiverClan as well. And remember when I told you about the alliance WindClan and ShadowClan had a long time ago?" Wrencry said. Acornkit shook his head and Willowkit did the same, then realised Wrencry wasn't talking to her.
"Well, there was a big big big battle and ShadowClan fought alongside us... Well not really actually. ShadowClan sort of forced us to join sides with them. We were sort of in the middle and we had to join a side. ThunderClan and RiverClan had joined forces afterall. Well, after that, ShadowClan thought that we owed them something. I mean, as if! We fought for them. Why would we owe them anything? Small fights would break out at the borders. Cats would cross very often. Then ShadowClan somehow got ThunderClan on their side. Finally, we managed to get RiverClan on our side. ShadowClan had been threathening them as well. This time, we won the battle," explained Wrencry. Willowkit struggled to understand.
"Can you tell me about Heartstar?" asked Acornkit. He glanced at Willowkit and flashed a grin. Willowkit beamed back. She had told Acornkit that out of all the stories, the one about Heartstar had been her favourite. It made her feel... warm. Acornkit had insisted his mother on telling it to him many more times after that, just so she could hear it again.
"Again?" said Wrencry. "Well. I now you love it." Acornkit nodded. If only Wrencry knew.
"Yeah. Please tell it again," Acornkit said.
"Alright," relented Wrencry. "A long time ago, a kit was born into ShadowClan." The story of Heartstar had grown to be a sort of legend told in all the Clans. Each Clan had been involved in some way after all. Of course, it was told differently in each Clan, favouring the Clan it was being told by.
"His name was Heartkit. Brightheart, his mother, died giving birth to the kit. Some time after, he fell in love with an apprentice from our Clan, WindClan. They kept their love a secret from their own Clans. One day, ShadowClan found out. Heartkit- Heartpaw now, was given a punishment. But he blew it. He brought back rogues to ShadowClan. This time, he was kicked out of ShadowClan. He came to WindClan, asking us for shelter. We gave him shelter, only for a few days. He had fallen in love with one of our apprentices, so we didn't want him to stay too long. So when he left he joined RiverClan. ShadowClan were very angry. They threatened RiverClan. Then one day, they decided to take revenge. They trained hard to be able to get their revenge on Heartpaw- now Heartstorm. Heartstorm was a good and loyal warrior to RiverClan and ShadowClan hated it. Stormpelt, Heartstorm's father had also had kit with a warrior in ShadowClan who wasn't Brightheart. ShadowClan decided that they would use that against Heartstorm. When RiverClan forced us to join forces with them and when we fought against RiverClan and ThunderClan, Heartstorm was forced to watch his own son die at the paw of his half brother. He went on to become Heartstar, leader of RiverClan," finished Wrencry finally. Willowkit had a small smile on her face. Wrencry glanced up and Willowkit quickly ducked behind Mintspot. "What is the moral of this story?" Willowkit listened. Acornkit couldn't come up with an answer.
"ShadowClan are mouse dungs?" Acornkit suggested finally. Willowkit listened intently.
"Hhhmm," chuckled Wrencry. "That is true. There are many morals to this story. Don't break the warrior code. Be loyal to your Clan... Goodnight. Now it's time for you to sleep." Acornkit yawned and gave a small nod. He curled up in a ball. Wrencry wrapped her tail around both her kits, keeping them warm. She gazed at them lovingly. Willowkit sunk to the ground and curled up in her own little ball. Her mind raced but this time, she couldn't go to sleep.
