Chapter 11

Rook and Domino backed away. Suddenly, the cat with the missing eye hissed angrily and leapt. She bowled into Domino. He squealed like a kitten as she hurled him to the ground. The black cat swiped her unsheathed claws at Rook. He managed to duck.
"Wait!" yelled Rook loudly. For a moment, the cat with a missing eye let go of Domino. He scrambled back with a few patches of missing fur. "What do you want? We can get you what you want." Missing tail cat raised an eyebrow.
"What do you have that I could possibly want?" he asked pointedly.
"I don't know. You tell me. We live with humans. We can get stuff from them. Stuff you can't get," Rook said. His eyes flickered around, looking for an exit. A way to escape.
"Ha. We have humans living in the farmhouse. And we don't need anything from humans," growled Missing tail cat.
"Nothing? N-not even food? Or- or toys? Maybe a blanket?" Rook suggested. He was panting hard, shaking with nerves. He had never been in such danger. Domino cowered behind him, tail between his legs.
"Toys?" boomed Missing tail cat. "Why would we need toys? Finish them."
"I am a Clan cat!" rushed Rook suddenly. He didn't know what he was talking about. The words had just come out. Missing tail cat frowned.
"Really? So what Clan are you?" questioned Missing tail cat. The stable was still. Rook took a deep breath. What Clan was he? What were the Clans? Suddenly, a feeling washed over him. It was like a breeze. Like the wind. A cold wind made it's way into the stable and brushed against Rook's fur.
"WindClan," Rook announced. He waited for the cats to attack. He knew it would come. The intense pain of claws in his sides. The feeling of his blood being drained. But it did not come. Apparently, WindClan did exist.
"Why didn't you just tell us before?" asked Missing tail cat, slightly more friendly now. He motioned for his companions to back away. Domino slowly stood straighter but he still trembled with fear.
"I wanted to see how you reacted," Rook answered bravely. Seeing how Missing tail cat was reacting, the Clans must be fearsome.
"So tell me, what is your name really?" questioned Missing tail cat. He was more prudent but there was still disbelief in his voice.
"Rookfang," Rook invented. He hoped to God it was a good WindClan name. Fang had been the most scary thing he could think of. Missing tail cat nodded slowly. He nodded towards Domino.
"How about you, trembling cat?" asked Missing tail cat. Rook could hardly breath, waiting for Domino's answer. Domino though, raked up all the courage he could muster and stood straight.
"I am Spiderclaw," he announced in a loud voice. Missing tail cat looked slightly more convinced.
"Why are you here?" cut in the cat with one eye. Missing tail cat gave her a stern look.
"No the real question is, how are you Rookfang when you look like you're just a kit?" Missing tail cat said in a mocking tone. Rook didn't know how to answer that. "And how can you be Spiderclaw? At the most you would be an apprentice. Spiderpaw." Rook had no idea what Missing tail cat was talking about. Suddenly, the stable door was opened with a loud crack. Two men trudged in. Without missing a heartbeat, Rook and Domino shot out of the stable. Missing tail cat gave an angry yell. He shot after them, dodging the human feet. Rook raced down the dirt road and past the farmhouse. Domino was right after him. The wind howled in their ears. The slipped under the fence and bounded across the field. In a single leap, they crossed the river. They weaved through the sunflowers, keeping together. Their ears were flat to their heads and their feet pounded the ground. Domino's heart bumped in his chest but he couldn't help but feel elevated. Rook wanted to yell with exhilaration. Adrenaline pumped through Rook's veins. Finally, they reached the street. With a yell of triumph, they scrambled over the fence and into Rook's garden. Rook sped to the front door and slipped into the cat flap. Domino was right after him. To Rook's relief, on the couch was Saffanah. She was watching television. She turned to the cats, surprised. Rook jumped onto the couch beside her and snuggled against her arm. He breathed heavily, smiling with relief. Domino trotted to Saffanah's foot and slumped to the ground. He was panting hard, unable to believe what had just happened.
"Oh my gosh! That was awesome!" Rook said through big breaths.
"You're delusional," replied Domino, rolling onto his back. "I am never doing that again. I almost died. I almost died. Oh my gosh I almost died!" Domino leapt up in panic. He ran to the front door and then up onto a chair and onto the window sill. He peered outside.
"What if they're waiting outside for me?" he whimpered.
"Of course not," replied Rook. "Don't be silly."
"Missing tail cat was chasing us!" answered Domino.
"You can stay here tonight, if you want. And I'll go back to your house with you tomorrow," promised Rook. Domino jumped off the windowsill and padded to Saffanah. She reached down. He shrank away but let her gently pat him on the head.
"Hey," she said softly. "Who are you? Don't be scared. I'm not going to hurt you." Domino slowly sat up straight and purred as she ran her fingers through his fur.
"This is who you have to live with?" asked Domino in disbelief. "Lucky. She's great." Saffanah smiled and tickled Domino under the chin.
"You're pretty. A bit chubby though," giggled Saffanah. Domino looked slightly hurt.
"I'm not chubby! I'm just a bit big on the belly," replied Domino. Diana walked out of the kitchen. She frowned when she saw Domino.
"What's this cat doing in our house?" she asked.
"He came running in with Rook," answered Saffanah. "Isn't he cute?"
"Isn't that the Porter's cat?" asked Diana.
              "I don't know," shrugged Saffanah.
"You can't let random cats in without telling me. Go wash your hands," Diana scolded gently.
"But he's Rook's friend," pouted Saffanah.
"Brook isn't allowed to let other cats in. I think we're going to get that electric cat flap," said Diana thoughtfully. Then she waved her hands at Domino. Domino just took a step back.
"I'm not going out!" Domino said.
"You've got to. I'll go with you," Rook said.
"We're not going to be able to fend ourselves," Domino replied.
"We'll go by the roof," decided Rook. "They don't live here. They won't be able to know where they're going. We live here. We know this place by heart."
"Fine. But what if you die on the way back?" Domino said.
"I won't," Rook said firmly. "Let's go." Diana watched as the cats fled upstairs. She threw her hands in the air.
"Really? No! Rook, get down- stupid cats," Diana said frustrated. She marched after them. Rook led Domino to Saffanah's room and to her window. It was open to let air in. From there, he leapt onto a beam holding the roof and climbed onto the tiles of the roof. Nimbly, Domino followed him. From there, they leapt from roof to roof until they finally reached Domino's roof. Diesel was barking once more. He barked and wagged his tail as he spotted them.
"I didn't remember how much I hate that dog," sighed Domino, slipping into the attic. Rook smiled. They sat on the sofa, staring out of the window, still processing what had happened.
"I'm sorry I made you go. I almost got us both killed," apologised Rook.
"You really did," agreed Domino. "But... I guess it was interesting. And sort of exhilarating. I've never felt like that."
"Me neither. It's kinda great," agreed Rook. "We should do it more often."
"I agree with that except the dying part. Let's explore the other side of the town. Where there aren't serial killers," Domino said. Rook smiled.
             "Sure," he said. "Tomorrow."
